Australian Open: Daniil Medvedev scripts comeback to end match at 3:40 AM

In an apt conclusion to one of the most thrilling Australian Open days yet, world no. 3 Daniil Medvedev survived a 5-set thriller to move to the third round on Thursday.

The match got underway after 11 PM local time on the Rod Laver Arena and saw Medvedev concede two sets to Finnish Emil Ruusuvuori before wresting back control to clinch the match 3-6, 6-7 (1), 6-4, 7-6 (1), 6-0.

In a 4-hour and 23-minute long match, Medvedev emerged winner at 3:40 AM.

After the match, the former World No. 1 thanked fans for staying till the end and admitted if he were a spectator, he would've left and resumed watching the game at home.

It was the latest finish so far this year, but not close to the tournament record.

Andy Murray finished off Thanasi Kokkinakis just after 4 a.m. last year in a second-round match that lasted 5 hours, 45 minutes.

And that was only good enough for second place.

The latest-finishing match in Grand Slam history ended with Lleyton Hewitt beating Marcos Baghdatis at 4:34 a.m. in 2008.
