'Wrestlers who got quota will go for Paris Olympics; no trials' - WFI President Sanjay Singh

Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) President Sanjay Singh has announced that there will be no trials for wrestlers who have already secured the Olympic quota for the Paris Games. Speaking to news agency ANI, Singh confirmed, "All the members of the selection committee were present, and it was decided that whoever got the quota would go for the Paris Olympics."

This announcement has significant implications for the wrestlers who have secured Olympic quotas. Vinesh Phogat, who had aspirations to compete in the 53kg category, will now have to participate in the 50kg category as per the quota secured. Consequently, Antim Panghal will represent India in the 53kg category.

In a notable development, Olympic silver medallist Ravi Dahiya will not be part of the Indian contingent for the Paris Games. This is because Aman Sehrawat secured the quota in the 57kg category, making him the sole Indian male wrestler to earn an Olympic quota thus far for Paris 2024.

The following is the list of Indian wrestlers who have secured Olympic quotas:

Women's 50kg: Vinesh Phogat
Women's 53kg: Antim Panghal
Women's 57kg: Anshu Malik
Women's 68kg: Nisha Dahiya
Women's 76kg: Reetika Hooda
Men's 57kg: Aman Sehrawat

This decision by the WFI to exempt trials signifies a shift in the selection process, emphasizing the importance of the quotas earned by these wrestlers through their performances. For Vinesh Phogat, competing in the 50kg category means she must adapt her training and strategy to excel in a weight class she had not initially aimed for. Similarly, Antim Panghal will need to rise to the occasion and represent the country in the 53kg category with determination and skill.

Anshu Malik, who has shown promising talent in the women's 57kg category, will now prepare for her debut at the Paris Olympics. Nisha Dahiya and Reetika Hooda, who have secured quotas in the 68kg and 76kg categories respectively, will also focus on honing their skills to ensure strong performances on the Olympic stage.

Aman Sehrawat's achievement in securing the men's 57kg quota highlights his potential and readiness to take on the world's best wrestlers at the Paris Games. As the lone male wrestler from India with an Olympic quota, Sehrawat's journey to Paris 2024 will be closely watched and supported by wrestling enthusiasts and fans across the nation.
