Rohit Sharma nears 11,000 ODI runs, set to become second fastest after Virat Kohli

Rohit Sharma's majestic 119 in Cuttack's ODI helped India chase 305 and achieve multiple records including overtaking Dravid on ODI run-scorer list and approaching 11,000 ODI runs, while also recording the highest captain's score in their 50th ODI.

Rohit Sharma nears 11,000 ODI runs, set to become second fastest after Virat Kohli

Rohit Sharma delivered a standout performance for India in the second ODI against England, showcasing his prowess as an opening batsman.

The veteran 37-year-old right-hander made a significant impact during India's 305-run chase at Cuttack's Barabati Stadium on February 9, when he smashed an impressive 119 runs off his blade, including 12 fours and 7 sixes.

In addition to his century, Rohit achieved several career milestones. By surpassing the 22-run mark during the innings, he overtook former India captain Rahul Dravid on the list of all-time ODI run-scorers.

With 10,987 runs in 267 matches since his ODI debut against Ireland on June 23, 2007, Rohit climbed to the 10th spot among leading run scorers in this format.

Comparatively, Dravid scored 10,889 runs over his 15-year ODI career, which included 344 matches, featuring 10,768 runs for India, 75 for the Asia XI, and 46 for the ICC World XI.

Poised to reach another milestone, Rohit is just 13 runs shy of hitting 11,000 ODI runs. Should he accomplish this in the upcoming third ODI against England at Ahmedabad's Narendra Modi Stadium on February 12, he will become the second-fastest player worldwide, trailing only Virat Kohli, to reach this milestone.

Adding to his accolades, Rohit broke Sachin Tendulkar’s record for the most runs by an Indian opener in international cricket.

Since becoming a regular opener post the 2013 Champions Trophy, Rohit has accumulated 15,404 runs in 345 innings, surpassing Tendulkar’s 15,335. Only Virender Sehwag has scored more runs, with 15,758 to his name as an opener for India.

Marking his 50th ODI as captain, Rohit set another record with his knock of 119, eclipsing Sanath Jayasuriya’s highest individual score as a captain in his 50th ODI, which was 107 against New Zealand in Sharjah on April 10, 2001.

Notably, England's Eoin Morgan also achieved a century (102 vs. India) in his 50th ODI match as captain, though Rohit's innings now stands as the highest in this context.
