Bangladesh name squad for T20 World Cup 2024: Taskin Ahmed included despite injury concerns

Despite nursing a side strain, pacer Taskin Ahmed was on Tuesday included in Bangladesh's squad for the T20 World Cup to be held in the Americas next month.

Ahmed, who has also been named the vice-captain, picked up the injury ahead of the fifth T20I against Zimbabwe last week. However, before that, the 29-year-old had a remarkable series, bagging eight wickets in four games at an impressive economy rate of 4.56.

The Tigers will be led by Najmul Hossain Shanto, as all the familiar and experienced players have been included in the squad of 15. Opener Litton Das too has been named in the squad despite his recent struggles with form.

Star all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan is the senior-most player in the squad, having featured in every event since its inception in 2007. His wealth of experience will be crucial as Bangladesh aims to make a significant impact in the tournament.

Bangladesh will start their campaign against Sri Lanka on June 7 in Dallas, Texas. They have been placed in Group D, which also includes South Africa, Netherlands, and Nepal. This will be Bangladesh's ninth consecutive appearance in the T20 World Cup, having qualified this time based on the T20I Team Rankings criteria set by the International Cricket Council.

The inclusion of Taskin Ahmed, despite his injury, highlights the confidence the team management has in his abilities and the vital role he plays in the squad. His performance in the recent series against Zimbabwe was a testament to his form and capability, making him a key player for Bangladesh in the upcoming World Cup.

Najmul Hossain Shanto, taking on the captaincy, brings a fresh perspective and leadership style to the team. His approach will be closely watched as he leads a squad that combines seasoned players and emerging talents. Litton Das, despite his recent dip in performance, has been backed by the selectors, indicating their belief in his potential to regain form and contribute significantly to the team's success.

The squad also features experienced campaigners like Mahmudullah, Mustafizur Rahman, and Soumya Sarkar, who have been pivotal in Bangladesh's past performances. Newer faces like Tanzid Hasan and Towhid Hridoy add a blend of youth and dynamism to the team, promising an exciting balance of experience and fresh energy.

Bangladesh squad: Najmul Hossain Shanto (c), Taskin Ahmed (vc), Litton Das, Soumya Sarkar, Tanzid Hasan, Shakib Al Hasan, Towhid Hridoy, Mahmudullah, Jaker Ali, Tanvir Islam, Mahedi Hasan, Rishad Hossain, Mustafizur Rahman, Shoriful Islam, Tanzim Hasan.
