T20 World Cup 2022: A tournament of upsets and rain madness

T20 World Cup 2022 has not just proved to be one of the most entertaining but the most open ICC tournaments of all time. From big teams being upset to rain madness throughout the marquee event, this World Cup has seen quite a few shockers.

Namibia stun Sri Lanka

The tournament saw an upset in the opening game itself when Namibia beat 2014 champions Sri Lanka in the qualifiers. The 55-run defeat dented the Lankans' chances of making it to the main draw but they eventually did.

West Indies fail to qualify for Super 12

West Indies though weren't that lucky. The 2-time champions also played the qualifiers but were stunned in their first outing. Scotland pulled off a shocking upset and beat the Windies by 42 runs, who were bowled out for a mere 118 while chasing 161.

The Windies then also lost against Ireland, who thrashed Nicholas Pooran's men by 9 wickets to knock them out of the tournament.

Ireland slay England

Ireland rolled back the years vs England and it seemed like ODI World Cup 2011 all over again as the Irish upset the 2009 champions in a Super 12 encounter.

Chasing 158, England was reduced to 86/5. Though Moeen Ali started to accelerate but untimely showers sent the players off with the Three Lions on 105/5. The game never resumed as Ireland beat England by 5 runs on Duckworth–Lewis–Stern method.

Zimbabwe win a nail-biter vs Pakistan

After losing vs India, Pakistan was looking to get their campaign off the mark vs Zimbabwe but the Men in Green's hopes of winning first-ever T20I in Australia came crashing down as Zimbabwe beat them by just 1 run.

Chasing 131, Babar Azam's men had a batting collapse as the equation boiled down to 3 needed off the final 3 balls which Pakistan failed to defend.

Netherlands knock South Africa out

The biggest upset of the T20 World Cup 2022 came on the final day of the group games. Against all odds, the Netherlands choked South Africa as the Proteas failed to chase down 159 runs in their final group 2 game.

A win would have taken Temba Bavuma's men through to the semis but they were knocked out instead, making Pakistan vs Bangladesh game a winner takes it all affaire.

The win also gave Netherlands an automatic entry into the next T20 World Cup.
