T20 World Cup: Rovman Powell to lead West Indies; Shamar Joseph and Shimron Hetmyer included

West Indies, the two-time World Champions, have unveiled their squad for the highly anticipated T20 World Cup 2024, which they will co-host with the USA from June 1 to June 29. The team will be led by Rovman Powell, with a mix of seasoned campaigners and rising stars ready to compete on the global stage.

Included in the squad is the young talent Shamar Joseph, alongside the return of power hitter Shimron Hetmyer, who was absent from the previous edition in Australia. The selection also features prominent figures such as all-rounder Andre Russell and former captain Jason Holder. There was, however, no place for Kyle Mayers.

Cricket West Indies has chosen not to name any reserve players for the tournament, a departure from the usual practice. One significant absence from the team is Sunil Narine, who has opted not to return to the national team for the World Cup despite a strong performance in IPL 2024 and attempts by captain Rovman Powell to bring him back into the fold.

This announcement places the West Indies as the tenth team to finalize their roster for the World Cup.

The squad was announced during a press conference in Barbados, attended by the Board's chief selector Desmond Haynes and Head Coach Daren Sammy.

The full squad for the West Indies T20 World Cup 2024 is as follows:

Rovman Powell (Captain)
Alzarri Joseph (Vice-Captain)
Johnson Charles
Roston Chase
Shimron Hetmyer
Jason Holder
Shai Hope
Akeal Hosein
Shamar Joseph
Brandon King
Gudakesh Motie
Nicholas Pooran
Andre Russell
Sherfane Rutherford
Romario Shepherd
