Australia pushes trade with India amid row with China

Sep 16, 2020 14:08 IST

Australia is pushing to increase trade with India as its relationship sours with China. India's growing population set to overtake China's in 2027 provides ample opportunities for Australia to diversify its trade that is currently China dependent. The Sino-Aussie relationship hit its lowest in 30 years when Canberra's calls for an international inquiry into Covid-19's origins was taken by Beijing as a political attack. China has since imposed barriers on Australian barley, beef and wine. Australia has thus shifted attention to India. Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison during a virtual summit with PM Modi signed a defense agreement and upgraded ties to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.
