To stay fit and healthy you need to be physically active. Regular physical activity can help protect you from serious diseases such as obesity, heart disease, mental illness and others. Riding your bicycle regularly is one of the best ways to reduce your risk of health problems associated with a sedentary lifestyle.

The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends that adults perform at least 150 minutes of moderate aerobic physical activity, such as cycling, every week. Cycling is a healthy, low-impact aerobic exercise that can be enjoyed by people of all ages, from young children to older adults. It is also fun, cheap and good for the environment.

Riding to work or the shops is one of the most time-efficient ways to combine regular exercise with your everyday routine. Here's how cycling can enhance your fitness level and overall well-being.

      Weight management

Cycling habitually, especially at a high intensity helps lower body fat levels which promote healthy weight management. Plus, you’ll increase your metabolism and build muscle that allows you to burn more calories even while at rest.

      Cardiovascular health

Cardiovascular diseases include stroke, high blood pressure and heart attack. Regular cycling stimulates and improves your heart and blood circulation, reducing your risk of cardiovascular diseases. Cycling also strengthens your heart muscles, lowers resting pulse and reduces blood fat levels.

      Leg strength

Cycling improves overall function in your lower body and strengthens your leg muscles without overstressing them. It targets your quads, glutes, hamstrings, and calves. Try weightlifting exercises such as squats, leg presses and lunges to further enhance your cycling performance.

      Improves balance, posture and coordination

Cycling improves your overall balance, coordination and posture. Balance tends to decline with age and inactivity, so it’s vital to keep on top of it. Improved balance is also beneficial in the prevention of falls and fractures.

      Boosts mental health

Cycling can ease feelings of stress, depression or anxiety. Focusing on the road while you’re cycling helps develop concentration and awareness of the present moment. This may help take your focus away from the mental chatter of your day.

If you find yourself feeling lethargic or listless, get yourself on your bike for at least 10 minutes. Exercise releases endorphins, which in turn help you feel better while lowering stress levels.
