Headache Pain: Recognise the different kinds and their warning signs!

From a dull ache to severe pain, headaches are common occurrences that affect most people. While a minor headache can be relieved with the help of some food or rest, severe and unusual pain in the head might need medical intervention on an urgent basis.

Living with a headache can be hard, so it is important to be able to recognise the different kinds and also their warning signs!

TENSION HEADACHES

A tension headache is the most common type of headache. The pain may last for 30 minutes but in some instances it can also last for much longer. Some of the common triggers for this type of headache include stress, anxiety and tiredness.

MIGRAINE

A migraine is a moderate to severe headache that is usually felt as a throbbing pain on one side of the head. Sometimes the pain can also be felt on both sides of the head. Some of the other symptoms include feeling sick, increased sensitivity to light and sound or diarrhoea.

CLUSTER HEADACHES

It is described as a sharp and excruciating pain felt on one side of the head and also often around the eye and temple area. The pain from a cluster headache can get quite intense. Some of the other symptoms include a red and watery eye, drooping and swelling of one eyelid, a sweaty face or a blocked or runny nostril.

Apart from these three types, some of the other types of headaches are sinus headaches, headaches from high blood pressure and medication headaches.

According to the NHS, UK, you must visit a doctor if your headache keeps coming back, painkillers do not help, you have a bad throbbing pain at the front or side of your head or if you feel sick, vomit and find exposure to light or noise painful.
