How older male jumbos help their species to survive

A new study published in the journal Scientific Reports highlights the importance of older male elephants in ensuring survival of their species.

Male elephants play a very important role in leading younger males and being effective leaders of breeding herds.

The study conducted by University of Exeter and charity Elephants for Africa analysed the behavior of 1,250 male African savannah elephants.

Older males act as a knowledge base for the young ones, providing important information like where to find food and water.
