International Youth Day 2021: Prioritise youth participation for a better tomorrow

International Youth Day 2021: As per United Nations, there are around 1.8 million people between the ages of 10-24. Amongst this, approximately 90 percent live in developing countries. These young individuals are keen and eager to contribute to society and propose inspirational change and progress. With the necessary skills and resources, young people can bring about an effective transformation in the world.

On 17th December 1999, the United Nations General Assembly endorsed in its resolution the recommendation made by the World Conference of Ministers Responsible for Youth that 12th August be declared International Youth Day. Since then, it is celebrated annually and has a different theme every year. The theme for 2021 is, “Transforming Food Systems: Youth Innovation for Human and Planetary Health.”

During the 2021 ECOSOC Youth Forum, the young participants highlighted several issues and priorities related to the impact of Covid-19 on the food systems in particular. They stressed the need to focus on the entire process and infrastructure involved in feeding a population, especially during a crisis.

The World Youth Day aims at providing a platform for youth engagement so that they continue to put in communal and individual efforts to help tackle inequalities in food security, restore the earth and safeguard life.
