Equity markets surged in the morning trade on Thursday led by huge gains in IT stocks.

At 9:25 am, the Sensex was 429 points higher at 40,308. The BSE benchmark index crossed the 40,000-mark for the first time since February. Similarly, the Nifty 50 index jumped a percent to trade at 11,856.

TCS, Wipro, HCL Tech, Tech Mahindra and Infosys were the top market movers.

The US markets also posted a sharp rally on Wednesday with Dow Jones ending almost 2% higher.
