After being stranded for more than 40 hours at a Turkey airport, over 250 Virgin Atlantic passengers, including Indians, are now airborne and their flight is expected to land in Mumbai late in the evening on Friday.
The passengers were stuck at the Diyarbakir Airport in Turkey after their Mumbai-bound aircraft from London was diverted to the airport on Wednesday.
In a statement on Friday, a Virgin Atlantic spokesperson said the passengers were provided with overnight hotel accommodation on Thursday evening.
"With all necessary technical approvals now secured, the plane departed Diyarbakır Airport at 13:00 local time on Friday 4th April, operating as flight VS1358. Customers are now en route to Mumbai, with an expected arrival at approximately 20:49 local time," the spokesperson said.
A passenger, who was among those stranded at the airport, told PTI on Thursday that all passengers were sitting on the floor, and there were no blankets available.
Also, there was no vegetarian food available, the passenger said on condition of anonymity.
Over 250 passengers are stuck at the airport. An A350-1000 aircraft was operating the flight that has over 300 seats, according to sources.
"We're sorry that Virgin Atlantic flight VS358 from London Heathrow to Mumbai on 2nd April was disrupted following an urgent medical diversion to Diyarbakır Airport in Turkey.
"Due to the nature of the landing, the aircraft required extensive technical inspection before the aircraft was cleared to operate. The safety and security of our customers and crew remains our highest priority, and we sincerely apologise for the inconvenience caused and prolonged delay," the spokesperson said in the statement on Friday.

Family members rushed him to the hospital, where doctors confirmed he had suffered a heart attack and was declared dead on arrival.
Baradari police station in-charge Dhananjay Pandey said the family did not inform authorities about the death.
"Had they reported it, a post-mortem could have been conducted to determine the exact cause of death," he said.
Senior cardiologist Dr. Pankaj Agarwal, analysing the video, suggested that Wasim may have suffered a sudden cardiac arrest.
"In such cases, the heart abruptly stops functioning, often due to undiagnosed coronary artery blockages," he explained.
Many individuals mistake early symptoms for gas or muscle pain, and if they engage in strenuous activity like dancing, it can trigger a cardiac arrest.
He advised regular health check-ups to prevent such occurrences.
Wasim was laid to rest on Thursday, with grieving relatives recalling how he had eagerly planned the anniversary celebrations in advance, unaware that the joyous occasion would turn tragic.

Vice President of UoHSU, Akash Kumar, stated that the students resumed attending classes on Friday after the Supreme Court's stay order was issued on Thursday.
The apex court has asked the Telangana government to justify the "compelling urgency" behind the proposed clearing of tree cover on the contentious land adjoining the university.
In response to the Supreme Court's directive, the Telangana government has formed a committee of ministers tasked with engaging in discussions with the University of Hyderabad's executive committee, civil society groups, students, and other stakeholders.
The aim is to arrive at a resolution pertaining to the disputed land adjacent to the university.
The student body expressed their appreciation for the Supreme Court's ruling.
UoHSU President, Umesh Ambedkar, reiterated the union's commitment to their cause, declaring that they will continue to oppose the proposed land auction until the 400-acre parcel is officially transferred to the university.
Moreover, the student union is advocating for the removal of police personnel from the East Campus, which includes the disputed land, as well as other areas of the campus. This concern has also led to a petition being filed in the High Court, noted Akash Kumar.

He said that those were the times when industry was suffering, drug mafia and gangsters were flexing muscles under open patronization of the erstwhile rulers and the development of Punjab had derailed. However, Bhagwant Singh Mann said that since day one of assuming charge in office his government had focused on holistic development of the state and prosperity of its people.
The Chief Minister said that the state government has fulfilled almost all the guarantees promised to people adding that even those guarantees which were not made have also been given to people.

Bhagwant Singh Mann said after assuming charge the AAP government has revived 15947 water courses in the state due to which water has reached at the tail ends even in remotest villages.
Likewise, the Chief Minister said that his government has provided free power to households from the month of July after which 90% of them are getting free power.

He said that it is a matter of immense pride and satisfaction that companies are making optimum use of the congenial atmosphere backed by excellent infrastructure, power, skilled human resources and best industrial and work culture in the state to spread their business.
The Chief Minister said that he wants to hand over tiffins in the hands of youth by giving them employment so that they shun the syringes and menace of other drugs.
He said that as Idle hands are devil&rsquo;s workshop, so the state government is trying its best to ensure that maximum youth get jobs so that they do not fall prey to the social menaces.
Bhagwant Singh Mann said that unemployment is the root cause of several social problems due to which the state government is focusing on eradicating this malady and so far around 55,000 government jobs have been provided to the youth.
The Chief Minister said that the drug mafia was patronized by the earlier governments but his government has launched a crusade against drugs.

The Chief Minister said that youth of the state possess inherent qualities to excel in every field and their capabilities must be utilized properly.
He said that the students and youth are like planes and the state government will provide them a launchpad to go ahead in life. Bhagwant Singh Mann unequivocally said that he won&rsquo;t rest until the youth of Punjab don&rsquo;t achieve their desired goals and excel in every field.
The Chief Minister exhorted the youth to stay grounded even after achieving huge success in life and believe in hard work as it is the sole key to success.
He impressed upon the youth to work hard in the state as there was a lot of scope of progress and prosperity on this land. Bhagwant Singh Mann said that the state government is committed to giving impetus to the development of the state and prosperity of its people.
The Chief Minister said that this Campus of Excellence has a sprawling 20 acre campus which has the capacity to provide skill training and facilitate job placements for over 3,000 students.
He said that it is a matter of immense pride and satisfaction that Rajya Sabha Member Dr. Vikramjit Singh Sahney has adopted and mentored ITI Ludhiana and has contributed Rs. 2 Crores from his MPLAD fund and additional Rs. 70 Lakhs by his own to upgrade and modernize ITI &ndash; Ludhiana.
Bhagwant Singh Mann said that the campus of excellence will offer cutting-edge technology courses including Robotic Welders, 3D Printing Machines, CNC Machines and others in digital classrooms with Audio-Video setups and advanced training Labs.&nbsp;
The Chief Minister bemoaned that due to indifferent attitude of previous regimes, the Multi Skill Development Centre had remained vacant and un-utilized for years adding that this centre will provide total free of charge Skill Courses to the youth in disciplines like Artificial Intelligence, Aviation, Hospitality, Tourism, Agriculture Skill Development, Fashion Designing, Beauty and Wellness, Nursing, CNC Programming, Electrician, Welding, and other courses accredited by National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC).
Bhagwant Singh Mann further said that there was tremendous scope of skilled manpower in various sectors due to which the state government has been focusing to deliver quality skill training to the youth on modern lines for coping up with the demand of local industry.
He said that Skill training center will fulfill a twin objective of coping up with the needs of industry to have skilled manpower on one hand and opening new vistas of employment for the youth on the other.

The announcement was made by Punjab&rsquo;s Minister for Social Justice, Empowerment, and Minorities, Dr. Baljit Kaur.
Under the leadership of Chief Minister S. Bhagwant Singh Mann, the Punjab Government is making concerted efforts to empower marginalized and underprivileged communities through initiatives in education, financial aid, and social upliftment.
Dr. Baljit Kaur highlighted the role of the Punjab Scheduled Castes and Persons with Disabilities Finance and Development Corporation in providing concessional loans designed to promote self-employment and higher education opportunities for these groups.
The Cabinet Minister detailed the eligibility criteria for these schemes, noting that individuals belonging to the Scheduled Caste community, aged between 18 and 55 years, with an annual income of up to ₹3 lakh, can avail themselves of loans for self-employment or higher education.
Additionally, persons with disabilities, aged between 18 and 60 years, with a minimum of 40% disability, are also eligible, irrespective of their caste.
Dr. Baljit Kaur reaffirmed the Punjab Government's commitment to launching new initiatives aimed at uplifting socially and economically disadvantaged sections, ensuring they have equal access to employment and educational opportunities.

Punjab's Cabinet has revised its mineral policy, launching initiatives to curb illegal mining, boost sand and gravel availability, fund pilgrimages for seniors, and improve rural education through a mentorship program.

Punjab Cabinet led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann on Thursday paved way for checking illegal mining in the state and further reducing the price of sand and gravel for public.
A decision to this effect was taken by the Council of Ministers in a meeting held here under the chairmanship of the Chief Minister at his official residence.
Disclosing this here today a spokesperson of the Chief Minister&rsquo;s Office said that the Cabinet also has approved significant amendments in the Punjab Minor Mineral Policy which aims to enhance the supply of raw materials in the market, reduce illegal mining and corruption, reduce consumer prices for the public, increase state revenues, and eliminate any potential monopoly in the mining sector.
The amendment stipulates Crusher Mining Sites (CRMS) thereby enabling crusher owners who possess land with gravel can now obtain a mining lease.
This move is expected to curb the illegal transportation of material from other states and increase the availability of crushed sand and bajri in the market, which are essential for development activities in the state.
Similarly, Landowner Mining Sites (LMS) will facilitate the Landowners with land containing sand deposits to apply for a mining lease and sell the material in the open market at the government&rsquo;s notified rates.
Previously, many mining sites remained non-operational due to the lack of consent from landowners, as they were unwilling to allow unknown individuals to mine their land.
The introduction of LMS will increase the number of operational mining sites, which will, in turn, boost market supply and state revenue. This move will also prevent monopolies in the mining sector.
Additionally, Deputy Commissioners have been granted the authority to issue No Objection Certificates (NOCs) for government and Panchayat lands, as they are the custodians of these lands.
This change will streamline the process and expedite the operationalization of mining sites on government lands.
The royalty on sand has been increased to Rs 1.75/cft with a corresponding pit-head price of Rs 7/cft.&nbsp;
The royalty on gravel/RBM has been increased to Rs 3.15/cft with a corresponding pit-head price of Rs 9/cft. The Cabinet reiterated the commitment of state government to ensuring transparency, fairness, and economic growth.
These amendments will not only address the needs of mining stakeholders but also create an enabling framework for the legal and transparent conduct of mining activities across the state. The policy aims to boost the state's economy while upholding environmental and regulatory standards.
Similarly, the Cabinet also gave approval for provisions of Mukhya Mantri Teerth Yatra Scheme under which senior citizens will be taken on a pilgrimage at the government&rsquo;s expense.
The government will bear the entire cost of the journey, including air-conditioned travel, comfortable accommodation, and meals. To make the pilgrimage memorable, the government will also present a special gift/ souvenirs to the travellers.
All citizens aged 50 years and above can avail from this scheme and it will be open to people of all castes, religions, income groups, and regions.
Residents from both cities and villages of Punjab can benefit from this initiative. The objective of this journey is to showcase the state&rsquo;s rich spiritual, religious, and cultural heritage by covering major religious sites.
Throughout the journey, spiritual discourses and devotional singing (satsang and kirtan) will be organized. At the end of the pilgrimage, prasad will be distributed to all travelers.
A budget of ₹100 crore has been allocated for this scheme, and if necessary, it will be further increased. The registration for Yatra will start from last week of April and yatra will begin from month of May.
The Cabinet also gave nod to implement School mentorship program in the state thereby stipulating that the IAS/IPS officers adopt rural schools across the state and mentor the students for excelling in life.
This Pilot project will be introduced in 80 schools of eminence of the state and every officer will be allotted the school for a period of five years irrespective of their place of positing.
This move will further strengthen the atmosphere of education through conversation with students and teachers along with it the officers will prepare the students for competitive exams and ensure training to teachers for upgrading their skills.
These officers will act a catalyst for mustering resources and resource person for development of these schools adding that these officers will work as mentors and not as bosses and this work will be voluntary service and interested &nbsp;officers will have to perform it along with their already allocated duties.

In March, the girl had to leave her shanty during the demolition drive, as it was allegedly on encroached land.
The Ambedkar Nagar Police defended the demolition.
&ldquo;This action was taken to remove encroachment from the village land, following an ejection order passed by the Jalalpur tehsildar&rsquo;s court&hellip;The demolition was carried out in full compliance with the revenue court&rsquo;s order to reclaim government land,&rdquo; they said.
The SC, which recently took cognisance of the issue, has sought a response from authorities regarding the circumstances of such demolitions in nearby areas. &nbsp;After the video from the demolition drive went viral, she shared with reporters that she wants to be an IAS officer one day.&nbsp;

Regions likely to be impacted include south Haryana, Delhi, west Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Gujarat, Rajasthan and west Madhya Pradesh.
The IMD said maximum temperatures in many parts of central and northwest India are expected to rise by 2 to 4 degrees Celsius during this period.
In Delhi, daytime temperatures could reach around 42 degrees Celsius at some places by April 6 or 7.
Earlier this week, the department said India is expected to see higher-than-usual temperatures from April to June, with more heatwave days in central and eastern India and the northwestern plains.
Normally, India records four to seven heatwave days between April and June.
States likely to experience more heatwave days than usual include Rajasthan, Gujarat, Haryana, Punjab, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, and northern parts of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.
Some states such as Uttar Pradesh (its eastern region), Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, and Odisha may see 10 to 11 heatwave days during this period.
India had an extremely harsh summer last year, recording 536 heatwave days, the highest in 14 years. The year 2024 was also the warmest recorded in India and globally.
This year, heatwaves hit parts of India as early as February 27&ndash;28. The year 2024 recorded its first heatwave on April 5.
Although heatwaves are common in India during April and May, scientists say climate change is making them more frequent and intense.
A 2022 study said the risk of heatwaves is likely to increase 10 times in the 21st century. Over 70 per cent of India's land area may face severe heatwaves.
Data shows that 12 of the warmest years in India have occurred since 2006, with 2016 being the hottest year so far.

Delhi airport will start trials of full body scanners in May, with the airport operator DIAL saying that the scanners will generate a standardised 2D image on a preset human avatar so that no personal images are stored in the system.
Four scanners have been procured, with two installed at Terminal 1 (T1) and two at Terminal 3 (T3). These scanners are expected to reduce the waiting time for passengers at the airport.
"The IT interface for these machines is being finalised, and upon completion of the three-to-four-month trial, a BCAS-led committee will evaluate the findings and establish a Standard Operating Procedure (SoP) for full-scale implementation," Delhi International Airport Ltd (DIAL) said in a release on Friday.
The scanners will be using millimeter-wave technology operating between 70 to 80 GHz. DIAL said that unlike conventional X-ray scanners, they do not emit radiation, making them safe for all travellers, including pregnant women and individuals with medical implants.
The trials of the scanners will start in May following the latest guidelines from the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS).
"These advanced scanners detect both metallic and non-metallic threats, including explosives, significantly improving upon traditional metal detectors.
"The technology, already in use at major international airports in the US, Canada, and Australia, enables rapid screening, with each scan taking just three seconds and a maximum throughput of 1,200 scans per hour," the release said.
According to DIAL, the scanners generate a standardized 2D image on a preset human avatar, ensuring no personal images are stored.
They will be equipped with four touch screen monitors for image evaluation and passenger guidance and can scan individuals between 3.3 feet to 6.7 feet in height.
"All scan data is stored securely with access restricted to authorised agencies, ensuring both security and convenience for travellers," the release said.
DIAL CEO Videh Kumar Jaipuriar said the full body scanners will allow for faster and more effective checks without compromising privacy.
The Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) in the national capital is the country's largest airport.
Bengaluru airport has been conducting trials of full body scanners for around a year now.

On April 3, the Rajya Sabha began proceedings and etched its name in the annals of legislative history with an unprecedented sitting from 11 am on that day until 4.02 am the following day, ie, this day, the longest in its history," Dhankhar said.
He added, "This would send a very great message to the people at large and enhance belief in this great institution." Dhankhar appreciated members for participating in the debates and discourses with enlightened inputs and varying opinion shades.
"After a long gap, the house witnessed welcome wit, humour, sarcasm and repartee, apart from intellectual fusion while ensuring parliamentary decorum, cross-party collaboration, and legislative rigor," he said.
He also extended his gratitude to Deputy Chairman Harivansh Singhi, vice-chairpersons, House and Opposition leaders, the minister of parliamentary affairs, party Leaders, and all other members for their invaluable assistance and cooperation in conducting these proceedings and acknowledging the efforts of the Secretary-General and staff.

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday approved four projects of the Ministry of Railways involving a total cost of about Rs 18,658 crore, a government press note said.
The four projects covering 15 districts in 3 states of Maharashtra, Odisha and Chhattisgarh will increase the existing network of Indian Railways by about 1,247 km, it added.
The four projects include the third and fourth lines between Sambalpur and Jarapda, and Jharsuguda and Sason; the fifth and sixth lines between Kharsia-Naya Raipur and Parmalkasa; and the doubling of line between Gondia and Balharshah.
"The enhanced line capacity will improve mobility, providing enhanced efficiency and service reliability for Indian Railways. These multi-tracking proposals will ease operations and reduce congestion, providing the much-required infrastructural development on the busiest sections across Indian Railways," the press note said.
It added, "The projects are in line with Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modiji's Vision of a New India which will make people of the region 'Atmanirbhar' by way of comprehensive development in the area which will enhance their employment/ self-employment opportunities."
According to the government, these projects are the result of the PM-Gati Shakti National Master Plan for multi-modal connectivity which was made possible through integrated planning to provide seamless connectivity for movement of people, goods and services.
Highlighting their benefits, the government said with these projects, 19 new stations will be constructed, enhancing connectivity to two aspirational districts such as Gadchiroli and Rajnandgaon besides enhancing connectivity to approximately 3,350 villages and about 47.25 lakh population.
"Kharsia&ndash;Naya Raipur&ndash;Parmalkasa will provide direct connectivity to new areas such as Baloda Bazar, this will create possibilities for setting up of new industrial units including cement plants in the region," the press note said.
It further said, "These are essential routes for the transportation of commodities such as agriculture products, fertiliser, coal, iron ore, steel, cement, limestone etc. The capacity augmentation works will result in additional freight traffic of magnitude 88.77 MTPA (million tonnes per annum)."
Talking about its environmental benefits, the government said the Railways being an environment-friendly and energy-efficient mode of transportation, it will help both in achieving climate goals and minimising logistics cost of the country, reducing oil import (95 crore litres) and lowering CO2 emissions (477 crore kg), which is equivalent to planting 19 crore trees.&nbsp;
