UP cops summon Twitter India head over Ghaziabad assault video

The UP Police have sent a legal noticed to Twitter India head Manish Maheshwari in the case related to a video of assault on a Muslim man in Ghaziabad.

Twitter has been accused of "provoking communal unrest" and Maheshwari has been asked to come to the Loni police station to record his statement within a week, news agency ANI has reported.

UP Police have booked Twitter and several journalists for sharing the video of the assault accusing them of spreading fake news without verifying facts. The Ghaziabad Police have denied any communal angle to the attack, which had been contested by the victim's family.

This is the first case against the social media giant after the government's new rules for online news publishing platforms came into effect. The microblogging site "has lost the legal shield", the government has said, "as it failed to comply with the new IT rules".
