Apple macOS Big Sur and Catalina security updates released: everything you need to know

Apple has released a security update for macOS Big Sur and Catalina, a few days after releasing an update for the latest macOS Monterey. It has not been specified what bugs exactly Apple has fixed in the updates, but they are recommended for all users.

In January, Apple released an update with WebKit-related security fixes for macOS Catalina and macOS Monterey.

Apple macOS security update

The macOS Big Sur update comes with the version number 11.6.4, while the macOS Catalina update carries the firmware version 2022-002. Earlier this week, Apple had released the macOS Monterey 12.2.1 update which fixed a major security flaw on WebKit, which would have allowed a malicious attacker to execute arbitrary code on a user’s computer. Apple acknowledged that the flaw may have been exploited, and advised all users to download the update immediately.

Apple also fixed a battery drain issue on Intel-based Macs in macOS Monterey 12.2.1. A similar fix for Apple Silicon-based Macs is expected to come with macOS 12.3.
