Google Wallet launched in India, cannot be used for payments

Google Wallet launches in India, but surprisingly lacks its main payment feature. Instead, it focuses on storing boarding passes, tickets, and other digital credentials, working alongside the existing Google Pay for payments in India.

Google Wallet launched in India, cannot be used for payments

The Google Wallet app has been launched in India. It is only available on the Google Play Store for Android users.

However, Google Wallet in India comes with a surprising elimination: the app lacks the core payment functionality it offers in other regions.

While this launch broadens Google Wallet's global reach, it carves out a unique role for it in the Indian market, focusing solely on managing digital credentials.

Google Wallet features in India

Indian users can leverage Google Wallet to store and access various digital items:

  1. Boarding passes from airlines and travel companies.
  2. Movie and event tickets from partnered platforms.
  3. Loyalty and gift cards from popular brands and programs.
  4. Transit tickets for select travel partners.
  5. Corporate badges from specific system integrators.
  6. Digitised documents containing barcodes or QR codes.
  7. The app can even integrate with Gmail's smart personalisation settings to automatically capture relevant information like movie tickets or train bookings, offering seamless access for users.

Google Pay remains the payment app

Unlike its global counterpart, Google Wallet in India does not handle payments. This crucial functionality remains firmly within the domain of the existing Google Pay app.

Google emphasises that Google Pay will continue to be the primary platform for mobile payments in India. Transactions through Google Wallet's NFC capabilities are currently unavailable in the Indian market.

This separate app approach for payments and digital credentials might seem puzzling.

While the rationale behind separate apps remains unclear, the launch caters to the growing need for secure and convenient management of various digital documents within the Indian market.
