The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has introduced UPI Lite for low-value transactions in India. UPI Lite will function similarly to UPI but is expected to be quicker and simpler.

Interestingly, with UPI Lite, customers may make payments without an online connection, allowing them to transmit money swiftly during peak hours and periods of poor internet connectivity.

UPI Lite is an on-device wallet, as opposed to UPI, which accesses a Bank account directly to pay or receive funds. Available within the BHIM UPI app, UPI Lite works similar to the PayTM wallet where users will have to add funds to the wallet and use them to instantly send money to someone.

The UPI Lite's ability to function without an internet connection is one of its most notable characteristics.

Since it is a wallet, users will need to add funds when they are online (with an internet connection), and then they may send money to anybody quickly even without internet access.

However, note that the money will not be credited if the recipient is offline (without internet access). When an internet connection is functioning, he or she will receive payment.

Additionally, UPI Lite does not require a UPI PIN; it will simply access and utilise the cash in your wallet. Notably, there is a maximum amount of dollars that may be added to your UPI Lite wallet.

Because it operates offline, you can only contribute up to ₹2,000 to your wallet. Additionally, you would be limited to sending no more than ₹200 for every transaction. However, there are no daily transaction limits.

Currently, there are eight banks that provide the UPI Lite function. These include the State Bank of India, Union Bank of India, HDFC Bank, Indian Bank, Canara Bank, Punjab National Bank, Kotak Mahindra Bank, and Utkarsh Small Finance Bank. We anticipate that additional banks will soon support the service.
