1984 anti-Sikh riots: Delhi court acquits former Congress MP Sajjan Kumar

A Delhi court Wednesday acquitted former Congress MP Sajjan Kumar in a case related to the killing of a person during the 1984 anti-Sikh riots, giving him the &ldquo;benefit of doubt&rdquo;.
Special Judge Geetanjli Goel also acquitted two other accused -- Ved Prakash Pial and Brahmanand Gupta -- holding that the prosecution failed to prove the case of murder and rioting against them. A Sikh man Surjit Singh was killed during the incident in Sultanpuri.
&ldquo;The accused Sajjan Kumar is given the benefit of the doubt and acquitted for the offence&rdquo; the judge said.
Kumar was accused of various offences punishable under the Indian Penal Code (IPC) including promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race etc. (Section 153A), abetment of any offence (Section 109), murder (Section 302) and rioting (147).
The riots had broken out after the assassination of then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi by her Sikh bodyguards on October 31, 1984.
Kumar is currently lodged in Tihar jail after a conviction in another case related to the riots.&nbsp;

Actor and singer Diljit Dosanjh has said that the 1984 anti-Sikh riots should be called a genocide. 
"We should not call it riots, the right word is genocide. When there is a two-sided fight between people, then it is a riot. According to me, it should be called a genocide," Dosanjh, who was born in January the same year, told PTI in an interview.
“It is not that it happened to one or a few people. I know it happened collectively, with all of us. If I talk about some incidents, it will be personal. I have been hearing about it since I was born and we are still living with it,” he said.
The deep-rooted trauma continues to be part of the community, the 38-year-old actor added.
Dosanjh's next film 'Jogi' is set during the 1984 anti-Sikh riots that erupted in Delhi and other parts of the country after former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi was assassinated by her Sikh bodyguards on October 31, 1984. Over 3,000 Sikhs were reportedly killed across India. Most were killed in Delhi.
Dosanjh, who plays the titular role in the movie, said the film is a "collective" view of the real-life incidents that took place in 1984.

Actor and singer Diljit Dosanjh has said that the killing of Sikh in 1984 should not be called 'riots', it should be called a 'genocide'. 

Dosanjh, who was born in January the same year, told PTI in an interview that when there is a two-sided fight between people, then it is a riot and according to him killing of Sikhs in 1984 was a genocide.&nbsp;
