Chaos ensued at several UK airports after a technical outage affecting passport control e-gates caused long serpentine queues on Tuesday evening.
E-gates are automated gates that use facial recognition to check a person's identity and allow them to enter the country without talking to a Border Force officer.
There are more than 270 of them in place at 15 air and rail ports in the UK, according to the government's website, which also says they are supposed to "enable quicker travel into the UK".
Major airports including Heathrow, Gatwick, Edinburgh, Birmingham, Bristol, Newcastle, and Manchester all confirmed problems with passengers being processed through the border on Tuesday evening causing delays.&nbsp;

Mumbai International Airport experienced a significant surge in domestic air traffic during the month of August, reaching 108% of the pre-pandemic levels seen in August 2019 as per a Mint report.&nbsp;
The airport recorded a total of over 4.32 million passengers, marking a remarkable 32% year-on-year increase. In addition to this, international air traffic also witnessed robust growth, with over 1.1 million passengers, representing a 33% increase compared to the previous year.
August saw a total of 20,711 domestic flights and 6,960 international flights at the airport. Among the domestic destinations, Delhi, Bengaluru, and Chennai emerged as the top choices for travelers. On the international front, Dubai, London, and Abu Dhabi were the preferred destinations from Mumbai International Airport.
Notable growth in passenger traffic was observed for various international destinations, with Munich experiencing a remarkable 150% increase, followed by Hanoi with 138%, and Istanbul with a 110% rise. Nairobi and Ho Chi Minh also witnessed substantial growth, recording 99% and 96% increases in passenger traffic, respectively, as compared to August 2022.
The airport averaged a daily passenger count of 139,661 throughout the month. In the domestic sector, IndiGo dominated with a 48% market share, followed by Air India at 18% and Vistara at 17%. In the international segment, IndiGo secured a 22% market share, with Air India at 14% and Vistara at 10%.
In terms of cargo, the airport registered a 6% growth in air cargo tonnage, comprising a 3% increase in domestic cargo tonnage and an 8% rise in international cargo tonnage for the month of August 2023.

A small aircraft with six passengers and two crew members on board veered off the runway at the Mumbai airport on Thursday amid heavy rains, sources said.
No casualty has been reported as of now, they said.
The Learjet 45 aircraft VT-DBL belonging to VSR Ventures was operating a flight from Vishakhapatnam to Mumbai, according to the sources.
"On 14.09.2023, VSR Ventures Learjet 45 aircraft VT-DBL operating flight from Vizag to Mumbai was involved in runway excursion (veer off) while landing on runway 27 at Mumbai airport," one of the sources said.
There were six passengers and two crew members on board, as per the source.
The visibility at the time of the incident was 700 metres amid heavy rains.
Both runways at the Mumbai Airport are now shut for operations, the sources said.

The plane was then directed to an airport 450 kms away from the initial destination but on not finding sufficient accommodation and transportation for over 300 passengers there, the pilots took to the skies again in the early hours of February 20 and landed back at Haneda airport, almost 7 hours after the plane took-off from there.
Later, the passengers were reportedly offered a replacement flight by the airline, which also paid for their hotels and taxis.

An Air New Zealand flight was two-thirds of the way across the Pacific Ocean when it had to make a U-turn and head back to Auckland. The flight landed back in New Zealand after more than 16 hours in the air.

In eastern Germany, the website of Erfurt-Weimar airport was shut down. The airport's internet provider was checking whether it was a hacker attack, dpa reported.

In a bizarre incident, a couple abandoned their baby at an airport check-in counter after arriving without a ticket for the little one.
According to CNN, the January 31 incident took place at Israel's Tel Aviv airport.&nbsp;
The couple frantically headed-off to board the flight for Brussels, leaving their child at the check-in counter, an airport official told CNN.
Israeli Airport Authority also confirmed the development saying that the infant was left behind by the couple in the hurry to reach the boarding gate. It added that the couple had arrived late at the airport and check-ins were closed too. So they ran towards the boarding gate and left their child.
This was followed by the check-in agent at the airport chasing the passengers, an official told CNN
The baby was later united with the parents and there is no further investigation in the matter, the CNN report added.

According to CIAL officials, there were no diversion or runway blockages and the emergency was withdrawn at 8.36 pm.

A full emergency was declared at the Kochi airport after a flight was suspected to have suffered a hydraulic failure en route from Sharjah to Kochi, informed Cochin International Airport Limited (CIAL).
"Suspected hydraulic failure at IX 412 from Sharjah to Kochi. Due to this, a full emergency was declared at 08.04 pm in the Kochi airport. The aircraft landed safely at 08.26 pm," informed CIAL in a statement.
According to CIAL officials, there were no diversion or runway blockages and the emergency was withdrawn at 8.36 pm.

Airport operations were declared normal post the withdrawal of the emergency. Earlier on Sunday, an Air Asia flight makes an emergency landing at Lucknow airport soon after take-off for Kolkata.
"Air Asia flight return back to the Lucknow airport after aircraft suffered bird hit, aircraft was landed safely and all passengers are also safe," an airport official told ANI. "An Airbus aircraft of Air Aisa with around 170 passengers was deployed for the Kolkata operation, all of whom are safe," Air Asia said in a statement

Foiling smuggling bid, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) officials on Tuesday arrested two passengers from Dubai at the Mumbai airport and recovered gold worth Rs 4.54 crore.
Based on specific intelligence that gold in paste form was being smuggled into India by a syndicate of passengers who were travelling from Dubai to Mumbai on January 17, surveillance was mounted by a team of DRI officers at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport Mumbai.
The suspected passengers were identified and intercepted by the team at the airport. A thorough examination of the passengers led to the recovery of 8.230 kg of gold in paste form. The value of the gold is about Rs 4.54 crore, said DRI.
Most of the recovered gold, DRI said, was concealed in the undergarments of the passengers making it extremely difficult to detect.
Two passengers have been arrested in the above case.
Further investigation is underway to identify the others involved in the illegal inflow of gold into the country.
