Yadav landed cheeky jibes on Birla and urged him to be "impartial" as the new Lok Sabha took its place. Samajwadi Party (SP) chief Akhilesh Yadav resigned as an MLA from Uttar Pradesh's Karhal Assembly seat on Wednesday after deciding to continue as the MP for the Kannauj Lok Sabha constituency, which he won in the recent elections.
Party's veteran leader Awadhesh Prasad also resigned from his MLA post after winning from Faizabad Lok Sabha seat.
A letter regarding his resignation was received by the office of Principal Secretary of the Legislative Assembly, Pradeep Dubey.
SP chief Akhilesh Yadav had been the MLA from the Karhal assembly seat, which he won in the 2022 UP assembly elections, and was designated as the Leader of the Opposition in the state assembly.
On Tuesday, the SP chief announced his decision, stating that he would be resigning from Uttar Pradesh's Karhal Assembly seat.
"I have met the workers of Karhal and Mainpuri and told them that since I have won elections from two seats, I have to leave one. So, I will inform you about leaving the Vidhan Sabha seat soon," Akhilesh Yadav said in a press conference on Tuesday.
When asked who would be the next Leader of the Opposition, Yadav said, "The decision will be taken by the party in a way that is beneficial for the party and increases the party's vote share."
SP leader Awadhesh Prasad also resigned from the membership of the Legislative Assembly on Wednesday.
Prasad, an MLA from Milkipur assembly seat, has been elected as an MP from Faizabad Lok Sabha seat. He defeated two-time MP Lallu Singh in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
Earlier, the Samajwadi Party announced that Akhilesh Yadav would be the party's leader in the Lok Sabha.

Posting the video on X from his official account, Yadav said, "If the Election Commission feels that this is wrong then it must take some action. Otherwise, the BJP's booth committee is actually a loot committee."

Tej Pratap was the SP MP from Mainpuri between 2014 and 2019. He is Akhilesh Yadav's nephew and also the son-in-law of RJD president Lalu Prasad Yadav.
The switch in candidates is said be the result of a demand from the cadre that the party chief contest the family seat.&nbsp;
Kannauj had been a Samajwadi Party stronghold until the previous parliamentary election.
Akhilesh had won from the seat for the first time in 2000. Later, he represented the constituency in 2004 and 2009. He left the seat after he became chief minister in 2012, and his wife Dimple Yadav won the by-election unopposed. Later, Dimple won from the seat in 2014 but she lost to BJP's Subrat Pathak in 2019.
The party chief getting down in the battlefield sends a clear message that SP intends to win back its bastion.
"The question here is of historic victory from the seat. The BJP will become history in this election as people have made up their mind for INDIA bloc. People are going to vote against the NDA. PDA (picchde, Dalit, alpsankhyak) will defeat the NDA this time," Akhilesh said, hours before the announcement was made.
Kannauj will vote in the fourth phase of Lok Sabha elections on May 13.

Afzal, who has been convicted of murder and kidnapping, had his membership in the Lok Sabha suspended in May last year. However, the Supreme Court conditionally lifted his suspension.
A special court in Ghazipur had in April 2023 convicted the Ansari brothers in a 2007 Gangsters Act case. Afzal Ansari was sentenced to four years in jail, while Mukhtar was imprisoned for 10 years.
The Supreme Court had in December 2023 conditionally suspended Ansari's conviction in a 2007 Gangsters Act case, saying his constituency will be deprived of its legitimate representation in the legislature since a by-election may not be held given the remaining tenure of the current Lok Sabha.
The other candidates announced by the party are Harendra Malik (Muzaffarnagar), Neeraj Maurya (Aonla), Rajesh Kashyap (Shahjahanpur-SC), Usha Verma (Hardoi-SC), RK Chaudhary (Mohanlalganj-SC), SP Singh Patel (Pratapgarh), Ramesh Gautam (Bahraich-SC), Shreya Verma (Gonda), Virendra Singh (Chandauli) and Rampal Rajvanshi (Misrikh-SC).
Of the 11, four hail from the backward community, five from the Scheduled Caste category, Virendra Singh is a Thakur, while Afzal Ansari is a Muslim.
The Samajwadi Party has been facing flak from party leaders and alliance partners over not giving tickets to the PDA (Pichhda, Dalit, Alpsankhyak) candidates for the ongoing Rajya Sabha elections.
For Rajya Sabha, voting for which will take place on February 27, the SP has fielded two Kayasthas -- cinestar Jaya Bachhan and former UP Chief Secretary Alok Ranjan and a Dalit Ramji Lal Suman.
Asked if its list for LS polls is a damage control exercise, SP spokesperson Rajpal Kashyap told PTI, "This list has all the elements of the 'PDA' embedded in it. And this is not a damage control exercise." He added, "The party's earlier list also had all the elements of PDA. Now, those who are raising questions, they have some vested interests." The SP on Monday offered 17 Lok Sabha seats to the Congress in Uttar Pradesh, with the condition that its chief, Akhilesh Yadav, would join the Rahul Gandhi-led Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra in Raebareli only if the proposal is accepted.

"I am not giving any advice or suggestions to the Congress party but there is a big challenge before the nation. The BJP is a big party. It is a very organised side. So there should be no confusion regarding it in any party. If you fight with confusion you will not win any election," the Samajwadi Party (SP) president told reporters here.

Actor Swara Bhasker and political activist Fahad Ahmad, who registered their marriage a few weeks ago, are celebrating their marital union. After a grand haldi, mehendi and sangeet ceremony, the couple hosted a qawwali night on Wednesday.
Besides their family and close friends, Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav was also part of the celebrations. He was welcomed by Fahad and later seen interacting with Swara at length.

After an old video of an IPS officer demanding money from a businessman did rounds on social media on Sunday, Samajwadi Party President Akhilesh Yadav attacked the BJP government in Uttar Pradesh asking it whether it will take 'bulldozer' action against him.
A video of IPS officer Anirudh Singh showed up on media on Sunday in which he was seen asking someone on a video call to arrange for Rs 20 lakh.
The purported video has been stated to be of the time when Singh was posted in Meerut district.
Since Yadav's tweet, a probe has been ordered against the officer who is posted in Varanasi.

In a rare outburst, UP CM Yogi Adityanath on Saturday lashed out at Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav in the state assembly following questions raised by the Opposition leader related to the horrific public killing of a key witness in a 2005 MLA murder case.
Akhilesh Yadav during his speech threw a bunch of questions regarding the poor condition of law and order in the state among other issues.&nbsp;
Countering the allegations put by the SP leader, UP CM hit out angrily at him even referring to his family feud.&nbsp;
The priest-politician then launched a scathing attack by referring to Atiq Ahmed, the man who has been accused by the victim's family of the murder.&nbsp;
