Aligarh could be renamed as 'Harigarh' as the city's civic body has passed a resolution seeking it.

The Aligarh Nagar Nigam has passed a resolution seeking a change in the city's name to 'Harigarh'.
The resolution, which was passed on Monday, will be sent to the Uttar Pradesh government for consideration, said BJP corporator Sanjay Pandit.
The proposal in this regard was moved by Pandit.
In 2021, a similar resolution was passed by the District Panchayat and sent to the state government for further action.
Some senior ministers of the state had raised the issue during the visit of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath to Aligarh on August 21 this year.
Aligarh, which houses the famous Aligarh Muslim University, was earlier called Ramgarh, according to the UP government website.
In the mid-1700s, the city was renamed Aligarh after its most important fort.
The first attempt to change the name of Aligarh was made by former chief minister Kalyan Singh in 1992 but he could not succeed as there was a Congress government at the Centre.
In 2015, the Vishwa Hindu Parishad had also pushed for recognition of the fact that Aligarh's original name was 'Harigarh'.
The Yogi Adityanth government has already changed the name of Faizabad district to Ayodhya, Allahabad to Prayagraj and rechristened Mughalsarai Junction as Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay Junction.

With the beating of "dhols" and garlanding of "bride and groom", the "wedding procession" was no less than that of Indian rituals.
Tommy, the pet dog of Dinesh Chaudhary, the former Sukhravali village head, took pheras with the seven-month-old female dog Jelly of Dr Ramprakash Singh, a resident of Tikri Raipur in Atrauli.
Tommy and Jelly's wedding was fixed for January 14, the day of Makar Sankranti. On the wedding day, the bride's side from Tikri Raipur reached Sukhravali village. The people who came from Jelly's "family" applied 'Tilak' to Tommy.
After that, Tommy's "Baraat" procession followed with the Baraatis tapping their feet on dhol beats. After the wedding procession reached the bride Jelly's venue, garlands were exchanged between the duo. After which "both of them were served dishes, prepared with desi ghee."

A policeman was suspended on Sunday for allegedly raping a 16-year-old girl related to him in a village in Aligarh, officials said.
The action against the constable, who was posted in Bulandshahr district, came after a report from the Aligarh senior superintendent of police about the incident that took place on Friday.
According to the police, the girl is from Kasgunj district, and she was visiting a relative in the village near Atrauli.
The accused policeman, who is related to the family, had gone to the village as well, and on Friday night, he took the girl to a neighbouring village on his motorcycle and allegedly raped her, the officials said.
Later, he also allegedly threatened her with dire consequences if she disclosed it to anyone, and fled the spot, according to the FIR.
The minor somehow managed to return to her relative's place and informed them about the incident, following which a case was registered at the Atrauli police station.
The accused was arrested on Saturday evening, and the girl was admitted to a hospital for a medical examination.
A senior police officer said a case under relevant sections of the IPC and the POSCO Act was filed against the policeman after the medical report confirmed the rape charge.

 The apex court reportedly allowed a former high court judge and a journalist to appeal to authorities to stop a dharma sansad in UP's Aligarh on January 23.
 Meanwhile, the top court asked the Uttarakhand government to reply to the petition on the Haridwar event within 10 days, as per reports. The dharma sansad, or religious assembly had been held between December 17 and 19 last year, and allegedly saw speeches exhorting violence against the Muslim community.
 The petitioners have claimed that no action apart from filing of an FIR has been taken.
 As videos of the speeches did the rounds on social media, the Uttarakhand police filed an FIR against one person - Waseem Rizvi who has converted to Hinduism and calls himself Jitendra Tyagi now. Later, 4 more people were reportedly named - Yati Narasimhanand, Sagar Sidhu Maharaj, Dharamdas, and Pooja Shakun Pandey.

Both Uttarakhand and UP are headed to elections within weeks. While the hill state will vote on February 14, UP will go to polls in 7 phases from February 10. Results will be announced on March 10.
