Delhi 'Very Poor' AQI forces 18 flights diversions

The visibility in several parts of Delhi on Saturday was relatively low, as the air quality in several areas of the national capital was recorded in the 'very poor' category. Multiple areas of the city were also covered with a layer of smog.

As many as 18 flights at the Delhi airport were diverted due to bad weather on Saturday morning, according to an official.
The official said the flights were diverted to Jaipur, Lucknow, Ahmedabad and Amritsar.
In a post on microblogging platform X at around 0810 hrs, the Delhi airport said low visibility procedures were in progress at the airport.

Even as pollution levels marginally decreased overnight due to a relatively better wind speed, a thick toxic haze lingered over Delhi and the NCR region for the fifth consecutive day on Saturday.
According to the Central Pollution Control Board, the Air Quality Index in several parts of the city witnessed a decrease but still remained in the 'severe' category, ranging from 401 to 500.
The concentration of poisonous PM2.5 was still more than 80 times higher than the healthy limit prescribed by the World Health Organisation.
The Municipal Corporation of Delhi has constituted 517 surveillance teams comprising 1,119 officers to keep a check on open burning, illegal construction and demolition waste dumping and dust on roads under its winter action plan, an official statement on Friday said.

The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) said that since Delhi's AQI was around 339, GRAP Stage-IV measures were being lifted, but actions under Stage-I, II, and III would continue to remain in force. Stage-IV restrictions were announced on 3 November. They are mandated to be imposed when the AQI crosses 450.

The CAQM added that the forecast by IMD and IITM did not indicate any "steep degradation" in air quality in coming days. Delhi's 24-hour average AQI was 339 on 6 November, down from 381 a day earlier, and 447 on 4 November.

With Air Quality in the national capital continuing to remain in the 'severe' category for consecutive two days, the SAFAR (System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting And Research) Friday revealed that the stubble-burning contributed 34 percent of Delhi's PM 2.5 pollution.
The severe pollution levels has prompted the authorities to invoke the final stage of anti-pollution curbs, including a ban on diesel-run light motor vehicles.
An AQI of above 400 is considered "severe" and can affect healthy people and seriously impact those with existing illnesses.
Besides, all schools in Noida and Greater Noida asked to hold classes online for students up to Class 8 till November 8 in view of increasing pollution in the National Capital Region, according to an official order.

Meanwhile, Delhi CM Kejriwal blamed the central government for rising incidents of stubble burning in Punjab ruled by his Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), saying it had "declined" requests to provide cash incentive to farmers for not burning crop residue.&nbsp;

Delhi is seeing its best air quality on the day after Diwali in 5 years, according to the Aam Aadmi Party government. Delhi Environment Minister Gopal Rai claimed that the air quality index (AQI) on 25 October 2022 stood at 323, compared to 462 last year.
Rai claimed that incidents of bursting of firecrackers on Diwali in Delhi dropped by 30 per cent this year. "People of Delhi were very thoughtful on Diwali this year and I want to thank them," Rai said on the sidelines of an event where he launched 150 mobile anti-smog guns.
He said the anti-smog guns will be deployed at 40 spots across the capital where air pollution is high. However, he warned that AQI of 323 is "still worrying" and that air pollution will rise in the coming days.
Rai credited the Punjab government for controlling stubble burning in the state without support from the Centre. He claimed that farm fires had increased in Haryana and Uttar Pradesh.
