BJP leader Pema Khandu took oath as the chief minister of Arunachal Pradesh for the third consecutive term on Thursday.
Khandu, the MLA of Mukto, was sworn in by Governor KT Parnaik in the presence of Union Home Minister Amit Shah, BJP president JP Nadda, Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma and Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang, among others.
Eleven other MLAs were also sworn in as ministers at the function held in the Dorjee Khandu State Convention Centre. Among them were Deputy CM Chowna Mein, former assembly speaker PD Sona, BJP state president Biyuram Wahge, and Dasanglu Pul, the widow of former CM Kalikho Pul.
While Dasanglu Pul is the lone woman minister, the new cabinet has eight fresh faces.
The portfolios would be allocated later in the day, following which the first cabinet meeting of the new government would be held, officials said.
The BJP returned to power in this northeastern state for the third time in a row, winning 46 seats in the 60-member assembly.

The BJP on Sunday returned to power in Arunachal Pradesh for the third time in a row, as the party won 46 seats in the 60-member assembly and secured a majority, Election Commission officials said.
Votes were counted for 50 assembly segments for which elections were held in the northeastern state along with Lok Sabha polls on April 19. The rest 10 seats were won by the saffron party uncontested.
Of the 50 seats, the BJP secured 36 seats and Chief Minister Pema Khandu is one of the 10 candidates who won unopposed.
Taking to X, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, &ldquo;Thank you Arunachal Pradesh! The people of this wonderful state have given an unequivocal mandate to politics of development. My gratitude to them for reposing their faith in @BJP4Arunachal yet again. Our Party will keep working with even greater vigour for the state&rsquo;s growth.&rdquo; The PM also said, &ldquo;I would like to appreciate the hardwork of the exceptional @BJP4Arunachal Karyakartas through the election campaign. It is commendable how they went across the state and connected with the people." The saffron party had won 41 seats in 2019.
The National People&rsquo;s Party (NPP) bagged five seats, while the People&rsquo;s Party of Arunachal won two seats and the NCP secured three.
The Congress won one seat, and Independent candidates emerged victorious in three constituencies.

A diplomatic back and forth ensued between the US and China over Arunachal Pradesh on March 21.

China on Thursday said it firmly opposes the US recognition of Arunachal Pradesh as part of Indian territory and affirmed that Washington has nothing to do with the India-China border dispute.
It also accused the US of &ldquo;instigating and using other countries' disputes&rdquo; for selfish geopolitical interests.
China&rsquo;s strong reaction came hours after US State Department Principal Deputy Spokesperson Vedant Patel&rsquo;s remarks that the United States &ldquo;recognises Arunachal Pradesh as Indian territory.&rdquo; Patel also said, &ldquo;We (the US) strongly oppose any unilateral attempts to advance territorial claims by incursions or encroachments, military or civilian, across the Line of Actual Control.&rdquo; &ldquo;China strongly deplores and firmly opposes this,&rdquo; Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian told a media briefing while replying to a question posed by the official Chinese media.
The delimitation of the China-India boundary has not been completed, Lin said adding, &ldquo;&lsquo;Zangnan&rsquo; (the official Chinese name for Arunachal Pradesh) has always been China&rsquo;s territory. This is an undeniable basic fact.&rdquo; &ldquo;The question of the China-India border issue is between China and India and it has nothing to do with the US,&rdquo; he said.
&ldquo;It is well known that the US has been instigating and using other countries' disputes by all means to serve its selfish geo-political interests,&rdquo; the spokesperson said.
The comments by the US official came days after the Chinese military reiterated its claim over Arunachal Pradesh following Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to the state.
Chinese Defence Ministry spokesman Senior Colonel Zhang Xiaogang on March 15 said that the southern part of Xizang (the Chinese name for Tibet) is an inherent part of China's territory, and Beijing &ldquo;never acknowledges and firmly opposes&rdquo; the &ldquo;so-called Arunachal Pradesh illegally established by India.&rdquo; China, which claims Arunachal Pradesh as South Tibet, routinely objects to Indian leaders' visits to the state to highlight its claims.
On March 9, Prime Minister Modi dedicated to the nation the Sela Tunnel built at an altitude of over 13,000 feet in western Arunachal Pradesh that will provide all-weather connectivity to the strategically located Tawang district and is expected to ensure better movement of troops along the frontier region.
India has repeatedly rejected China's territorial claims over Arunachal Pradesh, asserting that the state is an integral part of the country. New Delhi has also dismissed Beijing's move to assign &ldquo;invented&rdquo; names to the area, saying it did not alter the reality.
The Ministry of External Affairs on March 19 said it has noted the latest comments made by the spokesperson of the Chinese Defence Ministry &ldquo;advancing absurd claims&rdquo; over the territory of Arunachal Pradesh and asserted that the state &ldquo;was, is and will always be&rdquo; an integral and inalienable part of India.&nbsp;

The project will be developed by National Hydroelectric Power Corporation Limited which announced receiving approval for expenditure of Rs 1,600 crore on pre-investment activities on Tuesday.&nbsp;
The 2,880 MW Dibang Multipurpose Project is being built on the Dibang River at an estimated cost of 3.9 billion US dollars and will take approximately nine years to build.

More than a month after aggression by Chinese soldiers led to a scuffle with Indian troops in Arunachal Pradesh, the chief of the Indian Army visited the region.
General Manoj Pande visited units and formations along the disputed Line of Actual Control (LAC) in eastern Arunachal, the Army said on 23 January 2023. The Army chief was briefed on operational preparedness and the security situation in the region.
General Pande "complimented the troops for maintaining sharp vigil, and exhorted all to continue working with the same zeal and devotion", the force said.
On 9 December 2022, Chinese troops tried to commit transgression at the LAC in Yangtse area of Tawang sector. They were beaten back by Indian soldiers.
"The ensuing face-off led to a physical scuffle in which the Indian Army bravely prevented the PLA from transgressing into our territory and compelled them to return to their posts," Defence Minister Rajnath Singh had said while briefing the Parliament on the incident.

Days after revealing that Chinese soldiers tried aggressive manoeuvres in Arunachal Pradesh's Tawang, the Indian government has decided to install more mobile towers in the area to improve connectivity.
BSNL and Bharti Airtel will set up 23 new mobile towers in Tawang. The district administration had reportedly asked for 43 new towers.
"The existing towers were not giving the desired services, causing problems not only for the defence forces but also the civilians living along the border," Tawang Deputy Commissioner KN Damo said.
Earlier, there was no mobile network in the border areas but the situation has changed now with residents enjoying internet service and mobile connectivity even at Bum-La and Y-Junction but more improvement is needed, he added.

The officer said that all preparations are in place for installing the new towers, but winter would pose a challenge, which might get the process delayed.

The Indian Army's assets at the LAC include both airborne and land-based platforms.

China's latest misadventure at the border has confirmed that it wants to keep the disputed boundary with India boiling. However, China's stunts in Ladakh in 2020 have meant that the Indian military has been continuously stepping up its preparedness along the Line of Actual Control.
Let's take a look at some of the most destructive weapons that the Indian Army has placed at hotspots along the China boundary.
The Indian Army's assets at the LAC include both airborne and land-based platforms.
One of the newest acquisitions by the Army's Aviation Wing is the LCH Prachand. It is a light combat helicopter whose specialties include high-altitude operations, and attacking enemies on both land and air. It will be placed along the LAC in eastern Ladakh when the first unit is deployed in 2023.

The next explosive weapon is the K-9 Vajra. It is a tracked, self-propelled Howitzer gun. Its special features include its high speed allowing quick deployment. Also, it can destroy targets at up to 50 km in the rarefied air of high-altitude areas. The K-9 Vajra is meant to counter China in Ladakh, Uttarakhand, and the Northeast. It has already been deployed in Ladakh, and the Army reportedly plans to acquire 200 units for the other locations.
Another important weapon in the Army's artillery is the M777, an ultra-light Howitzer gun. Since it is lightweight, it can be easily deployed in hard terrain, and can also be carried by Chinook helicopters. It is strengthening the Army in the eastern sector, with 3 regiments deployed in the Northeast.
To boost its airpower, the Indian Army is also looking at loitering munitions, which are suicide-attack drones. They will give a boost to the Army's capability to track targets and conduct precision strikes. They will be placed along the LAC with China, and the process of procurement is already underway.

For explosive firepower at long distances, the Army has the Pinaka, a multiple rocket launcher system. It can fire a variety of ammunition. Its new version has a longer range and better accuracy. It has been placed along LAC in Northeast, with one regiment deployed in Arunachal Pradesh. The Army reportedly plans to get 6 more.
A major addition to the Army's arsenal in the near future will be the Advanced Towed Artillery Gun System, or ATAGS. Its special features include rapid and sustained rates of fire with longer range. It will be deployed along the LAC. The ATAGS is in its final stages of testing and induction is expected soon.
While the Army waits for its newer guns, some legacy weapons are still in use, like the Bofors Howitzer. Its newer version is more precise and faster in firing rounds. In forward areas along the LAC, the upgraded Bofors guns are a big boost for the Army.
The other legacy weapon is the L70, an air defence gun. It has been upgraded for automatic tracking of aerial threats. It has been added to the arsenal along the LAC in the eastern sector. The upgraded guns were deployed around 15 km from the disputed border in 2021.
Apart from firepower, intelligence-gathering is an important task near the hot border. For this, the Army is looking at surveillance drones with a range of 80 km, and endurance of 4 hours. These will improve surveillance in difficult and mountainous terrain along the LAC. The Army is currently assessing different options before acquisition.
The military's arsenal is expected to get deadlier as more and more made-in-India weapons are developed and finalised, like the Dhanush gun system.
Beijing appears to be playing a double-game, trying to continue military aggression, even as both sides sit at the negotiation table. In such a situation, the deployment of potent and effective weapons at the border are a necessary deterrent.

The Pentagon said that it fully supports India's de-escalation efforts.

The Pentagon added that it continues to closely watch the developments along the LAC at the India-China border.
"We have seen the PRC (People's Republic of China) continue to amass forces and build military infrastructure along the so-called LAC, but I would refer you to India in terms of their views," Pentagon Press Secretary Brig Gen Patrick Ryder told reporters.

"It does reflect though, and it's important to point out the growing trend by the PRC to assert itself and to be provocative in areas directed towards US allies and our partners in the Indo Pacific. And we will continue to remain steadfast in our commitment to ensuring the security of our partners. And we fully support India's ongoing efforts to de-escalate this situation," he said.

The clash occurred on 9 December 2022 due to Chinese aggression, and some soldiers were injured on both sides.

Chinese troops tried to "unilaterally" change the status quo along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in the Yangtse area of Arunachal Pradesh's Tawang sector but the Indian Army compelled them to retreat by its "firm and resolute" response, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said in Parliament on 13 December 2022.

Lok Sabha proceedings were adjourned till 12 noon on Tuesday following opposition protests over the issue of clashes between Indian and Chinese troops in Tawang sector of Arunachal Pradesh.
Indian and Chinese troops clashed along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in Tawang sector of Arunachal Pradesh on December 9 and the face-off resulted in "minor injuries to a few personnel from both sides", the Indian Army said on Monday.
The clash near Yangtse along the LAC in the sensitive sector took place last Friday amid the over 30-month border standoff between the two sides in eastern Ladakh.
Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi said Defence Minister Rajnath Singh will make a statement on the matter at 12 noon.
However, the opposition members did not relent and continued to protests and sought immediate discussion on the issue.
