A day after their embarrassing defeat to hosts South Africa in the first Test, India called up right-arm fast bowler Avesh Khan on Friday in a bid to bolster their pace attack for the second and final Test at Cape Town.
India lost the opening Test by an innings and 32 runs here on Thursday, the match ending in three days.
The right-arm fast bowler was named as a replacement for Mohammed Shami, who was ruled out of the two Tests as he did not get the necessary clearance from the BCCI medical team.
"The Men's Selection Committee has named Mr Avesh Khan as a replacement for Mr Mohd. Shami for the second Test against South Africa to be played from 3rd-7th January 2024 in Cape Town," the board said in a release.
The 27-year-old Avesh, who has so far claimed 149 wickets in 38 first-class games at 22.65, was a part of India's victorious campaign in the three-match ODI series against South Africa before the Tests in which he took six wickets.
Avesh is currently busy representing the India A side in their four-day tour match against South Africa A at Benoni, where he returned 23.3-5-54-5 to help bowl out the hosts for 263 in the first innings.

India went into the Test with four seam options in Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna and Shardul Thakur while also keeping ace spinner Ravichandran Ashwin in the mix.
"This was not a 400-run wicket and we gave too many runs. We sprayed the ball all around, but it happens. One can't depend on one particular bowler (Bumrah), the other three pacers also needed to perform their roles, we could learn from how South Africa bowled," Rohit told the media after the match.
"Bumrah bowled well and we all know his quality. All he wanted was a bit of support which he didn't get. That happens. All three tried hard, bending their backs but didn't happen the way we wanted to.
"But games like these teaches you a lot as to what you want to do as a bowling unit," Rohit added.&nbsp;

On the other hand, Rajasthan Royals secured the services of Devdutt Padikkal for INR 7.75 crore. Both players were retained by their respective franchises for the 2023 season.
Despite promising starts to their IPL careers, both Avesh Khan and Devdutt Padikkal faced challenging times in the 2023 season, prompting the trade agreement for a fresh start in the upcoming edition.

Avesh Khan expressed regret over his wild celebration during Lucknow Super Giants' IPL 2023 game against the Royal Challengers Bangalore.
LSG won a nail-biter vs RCB and Avesh, who faced the last ball, threw his helmet in anger after running the winning run. Recalling that, the pacer said that his celebration went a little far.
'I realised later that I shouldn&rsquo;t have done that. It just happened in the heat of the moment. I now feel sad that I shouldn't have done that,' Avesh told Indian Express.
That incident gave berth to the most talked-about rivalry of IPL 2023 as RCB was furious in the reverse fixture and beat LSG to complete their revenge.

I focused on my execution and I got 2 wickets in 2 deliveries which helped the team get back in the game".

Avesh Khan fires Lucknow Super Giants to a 12 run win against Sunrisers Hyderabad in their 3rd match of the Indian Premier League 2022 on Monday at the Wankhede Stadium. 
The Kane Williamson-led side had the match in their hand, but it all turned upside down once Avesh Khan, Lucknow's most expensive purchase struck. It seemed Nicholas Pooran and Washington Sundar would take SRH to the finish line, but it all came crashing down after Khan took 2 back to back wickets in the 18th over. He first removed Nicholas Pooran who scored a 24 ball 34 and then on the following ball ousted Abdul Samad. In the early overs as well, Avesh Khan had removed Kane Williamson and Abhishek Sharma. Apart from Khan, Krunal Pandya picked 2, and Jason holder got 3 wickets as SRH suffered a defeat in their 2nd consecutive match.
Earlier, With half-centuries from KL Rahul and Deepak Hooda, Lucknow made a stunning comeback. The duo lifted the game for Lucknow who were struggling at 27/3 at the end of the 5th over. A stunning 87 run partnership between the 2 players helped Lucknow post a decent 170 run target. While the skipper scored 68 in 50 balls, Hooda got 51 off 33 before they were removed by T Natrajan and Romario Shepherd respectively. 
Lucknow who have now won 2 out of their 3 matches so far will next face DC on 7th April and SRH will play CSK on 9th April.

In what turned out to be a low scoring affair between the top 2 sides of the league, the Lucknow Super Giants staged an incredible comeback to beat Rajasthan Royals by 10 runs in Jaipur.
Put in to bat first, openers KL Rahul and Kyle Mayers got Lucknow off to a steady start.
However, the plan seemed to backfire when they lost skipper KL Rahul, Ayush Badoni and Deepak Hooda before the 14-over mark and saw themselves struggling at 99/3.
But Kyle Mayers' 51 and cameos from Marcus Stoinis &amp; Nicholas Pooran got them to 154 at the end of their innings.
In reply, Rajasthan knew they didn't have to take any risks in the run-chase and thus their opening wicket partnership of 87 runs between Jos Buttler and Yashasvi Jaiswal made it look like they were headed for a comfortable victory.
However, things went haywire when Rajasthan saw themselves stumble to 104/4 in the 16th over, with Stoinis and Avesh piling pressure on the home side.
