Indian shuttlers had a good day in-office on the opening day of the Thomas and Uber Cup badminton tournament with both the teams registering 4-1 wins over their respective rivals in their opening ties on Saturday.
Ashmita Chaliha produced an inspired show to stun higher-ranked Michelle Li as the Indian women's team notched up a clinical win over Canada and then their male counterparts, defending champions, too dished out the same result against Thailand in their Thomas Cup Group C encounter.
The left-handed Chaliha, ranked 53rd, showed great mental resolve and tenacity as she outwitted world No. 25 Li, a gold and silver medallist at the 2014 and 2022 Commonwealth Games, 26-24 24-22 in a 42-minute opening singles clash.
Chaliha, who was part of India's maiden Asia Team Championships win in February, took over the leadership role in the absence of the top guns including P V Sindhu and delivered against Li, who is on a comeback trail after undergoing surgery for a meniscus tear on her right knee last August.
Young women's doubles pair of Priya Konjengbam and Shruti Mishra, who had claimed the senior national championships title last December, then beat Catherine Choi and Jeslyn Chow 21-12 21-10 to put India 2-0 ahead.
Isharani Baruah defeated Wen Yu Zhang 21-13 21-12 to help India take an unassailable 3-0 lead.
In the second women's doubles, Simran Singhi and Ritika Thaker went down 19-21 15-21 to Jackie Dent and Crystal before national champion Anmol Kharb beat Eliana Zhang 21-15 21-11 in the fifth and final match to complete the comfortable win.
Bigger clashes lie ahead for the young Indian side as it will face Singapore and China on Sunday and Tuesday respectively in Group A.
In Thomas Cup, HS Prannoy took the court first but lost 20-22 14-21 against Kunlavut Vitidsarn to leave India trailing 0-1.
Star Indian men's doubles pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty then had to battle it out for 65 minutes to get the better of Peeratchai Sukhpun and Pakkapon Teeraratsakul 21-19 19-21 21-12 to level the scores.
Then Lakshya Sen battled for 63 minutes to beat Panitchaphon Teeraratsakul 21-12 19-21 21-16 to give India the lead.
The second Indian men's doubles combination of MR Arjun and Dhruv Kapila tamed Tanadon Punpanich and Wachirawit Sothon 21-19 21-15 to seal the tie in India's favour.
In the inconsequential final match of the tie, Kidambi Srikanth made short work of Saran Jamsri 21-9 21-5 in just 29 minutes.
The Indian women will play Singapore in their next Group A tie in Uber Cup, while the men's team will be up against England in their second fixture on Monday

World Championships bronze medallist B Sai Praneeth on Monday announced his retirement from international badminton, bringing down curtains on a successful career during which he won the Singapore Open and also represented India at the Tokyo Olympics.

"With a mix of emotions, I pen down these words to bid farewell and announce my retirement from the sport that has been my lifeblood for over 24 years," he posted on his Instagram account.
"Today, as I embark on a new chapter, I find myself overwhelmed with gratitude for the journey that brought me here.
"Badminton, you have been my first love, my constant companion, shaping my character and giving purpose to my existence. The memories we&rsquo;ve shared, the challenges we&rsquo;ve overcome, will forever be etched in my heart." Praneeth will be beginning a new innings now as he is set to join as a head coach of Triangle Badminton Academy in USA next month.
"I will be joining April mid. I will be the head coach of the club, so I will be overseeing all the players there. Ofcourse, once I am there, we will discuss elaborately about the role," he told PTI.
In over a two-decade long international career, Praneeth had some fine moments but the 2017 Singapore Open Super Series win and the bronze medal at the 2019 World Championships in Basel, Switzerland were his crowning moment.
Praneeth reached a career-best ranking of world number 10 and qualified for the Tokyo Olympics but couldn't make a mark, losing all the matches to make a shock exit at the group stage.
"To my family - my grandparents, parents, and my loving wife Swetha - your endless encouragement has been the bedrock of my success. Without your unwavering support, none of this would have been possible," said the 2010 world junior bronze medallist.
"A heartfelt thank you to Pullela Gopichand anna, the Gopichand Academy, and the entire coaching and support staff. I also thank my coaches from childhood Arif sir, and Govardhan sir.
"I extend my gratitude to the Badminton Association of India, Sports Authority of India, TOPS, Sports Authority of Telangana State, Yonex, ONGC, GoSports, OGQ, APACS, WhatsInTheGame, PBL. Your belief in my dreams and your contributions to the sport have been instrumental in my journey."

Badminton Asia Team Championships: PV Sindhu lose but Indian women enter maiden final after beating Japan 3-2

India kept alive hopes of winning a first-ever gold in the Badminton Asia Team Championships after the women shuttlers progressed to their maiden final with a 3-2 win over two-time former champions Japan in a thrilling semifinal on Saturday.

The world No. 23 pair of Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand, world No. 53 Ashmita Chaliha and 17-year-old Anmol Kharb registered stunning wins.

India kept alive hopes of winning a first-ever gold in the Badminton Asia Team Championships after the women shuttlers progressed to their maiden final with a 3-2 win over two-time former champions Japan in a thrilling semifinal on Saturday.
The world No. 23 pair of Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand, world No. 53 Ashmita Chaliha and 17-year-old Anmol Kharb registered stunning wins in the first doubles and second and deciding singles to take India through to the summit clash.
India will face Thailand in the final on Sunday.
India had won two bronze medals in the men's team event in the 2016 and 2020 editions.
Though Japan were without their world No. 4 Akane Yamaguchi, the world No. 7 pair of Yuki Fukushima and Sayaka Hirota and world No. 8 combination of Mayu Matsumoto and Wakana Nagahara, they were still a formidable side, making it tough for India.
Returning from a long injury layoff, Sindhu had enjoyed wins against China's Han Yue and Hong Kong's Lo Sin Yan Happy but she couldn't produce her best against the left-handed Aya Ohori, going down 13-21, 20-22 in the first singles to peg India back.
Treesa and Gayatri, playing the first doubles, dished out a superlative performance to outwit world No. 6 Nami Matsuyama and Chiharu Shida 21-17, 16-21, 22-20 in a 73-minute contest as India drew level at 1-1.
Up against former world champion Nozomi Okuhara, who is currently ranked 20, the left-handed Ashmita produced an aggressive game, using her overhead cross drops and jump smashes to good use, to record a shocking 21-17, 21-14 win to hand India a 2-1 lead.
With Tanisha Crasto suffering a niggle, Sindhu then paired up with Ashwini Ponnappa but they couldn't get across the world No. 11 pair of Rena Miyaura and Ayako Sakuramoto, losing 14-21, 11-21 in 43 minutes.
With the five-match rubber evenly poised at 2-2, Anmol was handed the responsibility of taming world No. 29 Natsuki Nidaira, and the Indian once again lived up to the expectation, claiming a 21-14, 21-18 win in 52 minutes.
"Our girls are doing magic, they were excellent today," former India coach Vimal Kumar, who is with the Indian team in Malaysia, told PTI.
"I will give a lot of credit to Gayatri and Treesa and also Ashmita for pulling out of the matches. It was an outstanding performance from Ashmita, she outclassed Okuhara, she raised her game to another level.
"Young girl Anmol also showed that we can depend on her going forward. When you do well in team championships, it shows they can handle pressure and I am really impressed with her. This is special moment for Indian badminton." Ashmita vs Nozomi ============ Ashmita managed to draw out errors from Nozomi and also played some delectable backhand drives and forehand cross hits to open up a 11-9 lead after an initial battle in the opening game.
Nozomi clawed back at 12-12 but the Indian broke the run of play with a nice over-the-head drop and a backhand return and then a couple of straight smashes helped her to stay ahead.
The Indian pushed one to the back and then Nozomi hit wide as Ashmita grabbed four game points with a jump cross smash and sealed it when the Japanese's back hand went to net.
After the change of sides, Ashmita fell 2-7 behind but she soon stepped up the pace and entered the break with a 11-9 cushion.
Ashmita's angled returns and leap smashes created trouble for Nozomi as the Indian continued to accumulate points. Eventually, a stiff return on Nozomi's forehand handed the Indian seven game points and she converted in the second chance.
Anmol vs Natsuki =========== The Saina-like Anmol looked in control against Natsuki, using her drops and slices to lead 11-7 at the mid-game interval and then moved to 17-12. She grabbed six game points after Natsuki went wide and sealed it after winning a well-constructed rally.
In the second game, the duo was locked 6-6. Natsuki made two unforced errors and Anmol produced two precise returns at the forehand corner to be 11-9 at the break.
On resumption, the Indian moved to 15-10. However, Natsuki chipped away at the lead, making it 15-16 at one stage.
A precise return at the forehand corner helped Anmol to stay ahead. But the Japanese produced a cross court smash and with Anmol going long the scores were levelled at 17-17. However, Natsuki committed four unforced errors thereafter as Anmol sealed the match.
In the final, India will have their task cut out against Thailand, who are without world No. 13 Ratchanok Intanon and world No. 16 Pornpawee Chochuwong. Their singles will be spearheaded by world no. 17 Supanida Katethong and world no. 18 Busanan Ongbamrungphan.
Supanida has troubled Sindhu in the past but the Indian will have to pull out of her match, while Ashmita will fancy her chances against Busanan and Anmol will be expected to fight it out against world no 45 Pornpicha Choeikeewong.
Doubles remain Thailand's strength with world No. 10 pair of Jongkolphan Kititharakul and Rawinda Prajongjai, and world No. 13 Benyapa Aimsaard and Nuntakarn Aimsaard in their ranks.

Indian women shuttlers assured themselves of a maiden Badminton Asia Team Championships medal by cruising to a 3-0 win over Hong Kong in the quarterfinals.
After stunning top seeds China to top the group stage, India blanked Hong Kong riding on wins from double Olympic-medallist PV Sindhu, Ashmita Chaliha and the doubles pair of Ashwini Ponappa and Tanisha Crasto.
India will now face the winner of the other quarterfinal between Japan and top seeds China.
Returning from a long injury layoff, Sindhu registered a hard-fought 21-7, 16-21, 21-12 win against a lower-ranked Lo Sin Yan Happy.
The women's doubles combination of Tanisha and Ponnappa then doubled the lead by getting the better of world no. 18 combination of Yeung Nga Ting and Yeung Pui Lam 21-10, 21-14 in 35 minutes.
Ashmita then wrapped up the tie with a comfortable 21-12, 21-13 triumph over Yeung Sum Yee, assuring the team of at least a bronze.
"It is a comfortable result for the women's team. I am very happy with their performance," former national coach Vimal Kumar, who is with the team, told PTI from Shah Alam.
"There was a little drift, so it was initially difficult to control the shuttle as it was going out. Sindhu was stretched a bit as it was tough from one end due to the drift but it is a good result, we are in the semifinals." Up against world no. 77 Lo, Sindhu zoomed to 11-1 in the opening game after her rival found the going tough. The Indian conceded six points after resumption before wrapping up the game.
It turned out to be a tight battle after the change of sides as Sindhu and Lo moved neck and neck till 10-10 before the Hong Kong player went into the break with a one-point lead with the help of a cross drop.
Lo jumped to a 15-10 lead thereafter with Sindhu struggling to control the shuttle, hitting at the net and long. Lo too produced some good shots, including a body smash and Sindhu made few judgement errors at the backline.
Lo eventually took the match to the decider when Sindhu went to the net again.
In the decider, Sindhu was back in her element as she rushed to a 5-1 lead. Lo did engage the Indian in some exciting rallies but she lacked precision. The result was that Sindhu took a 11-7 cushing at the break after Lo served into the net.
After resumption, Sindhu used her variety of strokes to accumulate points quickly, moving to 17-8. She grabbed nine match points when Lo sprayed into net and converted it in the second chance with Lo again going wide.
The Indian men's team will face Japan later in the day in the quarterfinals.&nbsp;

Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, India&rsquo;s history-making men&rsquo;s doubles duo, have been nominated for the prestigious Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna award on Wednesday December 13th. The award is given to the most outstanding sportspersons recognizing their remarkable achievements in the sport in the last two years.
Confirming the development ahead of official announcement, a Badminton Association of India (BAI) official said: &ldquo;Nowadays athletes apply for the awards directly. After scrutiny, the sports ministry discusses with the respective national sports federation (NSF) that they are considering the said athlete for the award. The federation either gives or does not give consent with reasoning. Normally players and the association have an informal discussion before applying, given their performance in the international arena. Satwik and Chirag had discussions with us before applying. The last date was December 2 I believe. The ministry hasn't reached out to us yet. We will, of course, approve their nomination. They are our jewels.&rdquo;
Can Satwik-Chirag become first doubles pair to recieve this award?
Only three badminton players from the country have previously laid claim to the accoladen and they are Pullela Gopichand, Saina Nehwal, and PV Sindhu. The doubles pair is in line to be the first in its category to win the award.

<h2>28-year-old Okuhara, took to social media to narrate her ordeal after being harassed by cab drivers at Delhi airport and not getting any official transportation after arriving in Cuttack on Monday to play in the Odisha Open.</h2>

Former world champion and Olympic medallist shuttler Nozomi Okuhara recently narrated her harrowing travel experience in India where she was duped by Delhi's cab drivers and also made to wait for four hours before being allotted a hotel room in Cuttack, Odisha.
The 28-year-old Okuhara, took to the social media platform fansnet.jp to narrate her ordeal after being harassed by cab drivers at Delhi airport and not getting any official transportation after arriving in Cuttack on Monday to play in the Odisha Open.
She also had to wait for four hours to check in at the hotel and wasn't provided with a shuttle bus/car for her scheduled 8 am practice session.
An embarrassed Badminton Association of India (BAI) general secretary Sanjay Mishra termed the series of incidents as "unfortunate" and promised that "it won't happen in future".
However, in the local organising committee's defence, the all-powerful BAI secretary general said the ace Japanese shuttler didn't send any e-mail informing the logistical details (local travel and accommodation) which could have ensured proper arrangement before her arrival.
"I understand what Okuhara must have been through but the fact is that we didn't receive any email regarding accommodation or transportation from her end. It is a technical issue and a matter of miscommunication. We had no information," Mishra told PTI.
Terming it as an unfortunate incident, Mishra promised that nothing of this sort will happen in future.
"It is unfortunate but the moment I came to know about it I spoke to the organisers and provided all help. She is a big player and is our guest and we will ensure nothing of this sort happens in future." A former world No. 1, Okuhara, who claimed the Syed Modi International Super 300 title in Lucknow and skipped the Guwahati event the following week, had arrived in New Delhi via Hong Kong on Sunday night.
It was then her ordeal started.
The disturbing chain of events began when a stranger put her luggage on a trolley at the Delhi airport and then she was duped by a private taxi driver as she ended up paying 10 times more than what an Uber would have cost her to reach a nearby hotel for an overnight stay.
Arrangements are made for the team and not an individual&nbsp;
However, Mishra also said such an incident wouldn't have occurred if it was an entire contingent travelling because the manager of the squad takes care of the logistical details.
"If it is an entire team (travelling) then the team manager contacts the organising committee and things are arranged immediately.
But she was alone and she didn't contact (organisers), so the organisers didn't know when she was arriving. It didn't happen on purpose, it happened by mistake," Mishra said.
"After arriving in Delhi, she (Okuhara) could have just called the organising secretary or competition manager. It happens sometimes when we travel overseas for an event and there is no one to receive. Nevertheless, it won't happen again." Organising secretary Nileen Kumar, who is also a BAI executive council member, said he had met Okuhara at the hotel but was a bit brazen in his attempt to justify what they think is an unintentional mistake.
"I saw her sitting there in the hotel lobby. BAI joint secretary Prabhakar Rao was also there and we offered our help.
"Players have to send requests for accommodation in a BWF form but we didn't receive any such communication from her. It is the same for everyone.
Since there was no request, there was no room booked for her. Other players, who came from 30 other countries didn't face any such problem," Kumar said.
'You don't get shuttle bus if you don't stay in official hotel'
It was Okuhara's Indian friends, star shuttlers HS Prannoy and PV Sindhu, who spoke to the local members and organised her accommodation.
Prannoy, a world medallist himself, also arranged a car which would take her to training as she wasn't provided with a shuttle bus allocated for players.
Kumar, the BAI EC member reasoned that Okuhara is only entitled to a shuttle bus pick-up if she is staying in the official team hotel, where she didn't have a booking, having not filled up the form.
"If you stay in the official hotel, then only you get a shuttle bus. It is not possible for the organisers to get players from other hotels across the city," Kumar said.
This is not the first such incident as other international shuttlers have also complained about various things over the last three weeks, which saw India hosting Syed Modi International in Lucknow, Guwahati Masters and Odisha Open.

Indian badminton duo Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty achieved a remarkable milestone in their careers as they secured the coveted World No. 3 ranking. The pair recently clinched the title of Indonesia Open champions, defeating reigning world champions Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik of Malaysia in straight games. Their victory in the Super 1000 event not only marks a historic moment for India but also continues their exceptional performance in 2023.
The updated rankings released by the Badminton World Federation (BWF) also shed light on the positions of other Indian shuttlers. In the men's singles category, HS Prannoy maintained his number 9 spot despite a loss to World No. 1 Victor Axelsen in the Indonesia Open semifinals. Meanwhile, Kidambi Srikanth made a significant leap of three places, securing the 19th position, while Lakshya Sen climbed two notches to claim the 18th spot. Promising shuttler Priyanshu Rajawat also soared up the rankings, reaching a career-high position of world number 30, marking a jump of four places.
The women's singles category witnessed positive movements as well, with PV Sindhu, a double Olympic medalist, climbing two places to reach world number 12. Saina Nehwal, a veteran in the sport, also made progress, rising to world number 31 after moving up by one place.
In doubles, Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand maintained their 16th place ranking, while Ashwini Bhat and Shikha Gautam slipped two places to secure the 41st position. The Indian mixed pair of Rohan Kapoor and Sikki Reddy experienced a positive shift, climbing two places to reach world number 33. Tanisha Crasto and Ishan Bhatnagar, another Indian duo, slipped one place to world number 38.

India were knocked out of the Sudirman Cup tournament after being thrashed 5-0 by Malaysia in the second Group C match of the mixed team championships on Monday.
Star shuttlers Kidambi Srikanth and PV Sindhu couldn't produce the goods as it was all over for India in the prestigious tournament.
While Srikanth was too erratic in men's singles contest, Sindhu showed great fightback in the decider after squandering an opening game advantage only to go down in the end to world No. 30 Goh Jin Wei.
In the first match of the tie, it was always going to be an uphill task for Dhruv Kapila and Ashwini Ponnappa to tame the world No. 8 pair of Goh Soon Huat and Lai Shevon Jemie and the Indian combination tried their heart out before losing 16-21, 17-21 in 35 minutes.
An error-prone Srikanth then couldn't get India's campaign back on track, going down 16-21, 11-21 to world No. 8 Lee Zii Jia in a lop-sided men's singles contest as the team was 0-2 down after the first two matches.
World No. 12 Sindhu then erased a 2-11 deficit in the third game but couldn't go the distance, losing 21-14, 10-21, 20-22 to Goh in the women's singles as India conceded a 0-3 lead to Malaysia in the five-match tie.
The result left India in third in the group with Chinese Taipei and Malaysia qualifying for the quarterfinals.
