Bangladesh&rsquo;s Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus on Monday said the next general election in the country could take place by the end of 2025 or the first half of 2026.
He, however, said the timing of the election will largely depend upon the political consensus and the extent of the reforms that must be carried out before it.
&ldquo;Broadly speaking, the election can be scheduled between the end of 2025 and the first half of 2026,&rdquo; he said in a televised speech to the nation on Vijay Diwas. Vijay Diwas commemorates the Pakistan military&rsquo;s surrender to Indian forces. India&rsquo;s historic victory led to the liberation of Bangladesh.
Yunus said he has repeatedly appealed to all to hold the polls after completing all the major reforms.
&ldquo;However, if, due to political consensus, we have to hold the election based on a flawless preparation of the voter list with minor reforms, then it may be possible to hold the elections by the end of 2025,&rdquo; United News of Bangladesh quoted Yunus as saying.
&ldquo;And if we add to this the expected level of reforms in the electoral process and in light of the recommendations of the Election Reforms Commission and based on the national consensus, then it may take at least another six months,&rdquo; said Yunus.
Yunus, who heads the caretaker government installed after the ouster of Sheikh Hasina&rsquo;s government on August 5 following a student-led uprising, highlighted the extensive work required to update the voter list, a critical step in the election process.
&ldquo;From now on, the responsibility has been entrusted to them to start the process of forming the future government. They have started their preparations. They have a lot of work to do,&rdquo; he said.
Yunus said no one has had the opportunity to verify the voters&rsquo; list.
&ldquo;We have to make sure that the names of all those who have become eligible to vote in the last 15 years are included in the voters&rsquo; list. This is a big task,&rdquo; he said.
After the student uprising, there is no room for making any mistake as after a long time, many young people will vote for the first time, he said, adding that in the past, they were deprived of that right and joy. The security situation in Bangladesh has been difficult following the ouster of the former prime minister Sheikh Hasina, White House National Security Communications Advisor John Kirby said.

President Joe Biden is closely monitoring the situation in Bangladesh and the US will hold the country's interim government accountable for ensuring the protection of religious and ethnic minorities, the White House has said.
The security situation in Bangladesh has been difficult following the ouster of the former prime minister Sheikh Hasina, White House National Security Communications Advisor John Kirby said.
"And we have been working closely with the interim government to enhance the capability of their law enforcement and security services to deal with the challenge," Kirby said at a news conference on Thursday.
Hasina was ousted as prime minister in the face of a massive anti-government protest in August.
There have been a spate of incidents of violence against Hindus and other minorities, as well as attacks on temples in the last few weeks in Bangladesh.
"We&rsquo;ve been very clear in our engagement with all Bangladeshi leaders that protection of religious and ethnic minorities is absolutely critical, and the leaders of the interim government have repeatedly committed to providing security to all Bangladeshis, regardless of religion or ethnicity," he said.
"We want to hold them to that," Kirby said in response to a question.
Over the past few weeks, Indian Americans have held peaceful protests and marches in several cities, including in front of the White House, in Chicago, New York, SFO, Detroit, Houston and Atlanta, urging Biden to help stop alleged brutalities against the minority Hindu community in Bangladesh.
Earlier in the day, Indian-American Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi urged members of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee to address the issue of violence against minorities, primarily Hindus, in Bangladesh during the confirmation hearing of Senator Marco Rubio for the position of secretary of state.
President-elect Donald Trump has nominated Senator Rubio for the top diplomatic position. The date of his confirmation hearing has not been announced yet.
"As targeted violence against Hindus and other minorities continues amid the disorder in Bangladesh, I urge the members of the Senate's Committee on Foreign Relations to address this crisis directly during the upcoming hearings to confirm Senator Rubio as the next US secretary of state," Krishnamoorthi said.
Over the weekend, a large number of Indian-Americans held a march from the White House to the US Capitol over alleged attacks on Hindus in Bangladesh.
Raising slogans like &ldquo;We want Justice&rdquo; and &ldquo;Protect Hindus&rdquo;, the demonstrators urged the Biden administration and the incoming Trump administration to ask the new government in Bangladesh to take steps to protect Hindus and also initiate action against those responsible for this.
"The Bangladeshi Hindu community and the larger Hindu diaspora from the Indian subcontinent have come in support of the Bangladesh Hindu community because there is continuing violence going on in Bangladesh, specifically in Chittagong and Rangpur area, as well as in some other parts of the country," said Utsav Chakrabarti of HinduACTion.

Criticizing Bangladesh's interim administration led by Nobel Peace Prize laureate Muhammad Yunus, Ambekar accused the government of failing to curb the violence. "A country led by a peace prize recipient should not witness such unrest. Yet, there is no meaningful action to address these crimes," he remarked.
Ambekar also highlighted the role of "global forces" in fomenting unrest in Bangladesh and urged their identification and exposure. "Such powers need to be confronted and held accountable for their interference," he added.
The RSS has repeatedly raised concerns about the situation in Bangladesh. In a statement issued on November 30, General Secretary Dattatreya Hosabale criticized the Bangladeshi government for its inaction, describing it as a "silent spectator" to the atrocities.
Earlier, in October, RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat condemned the escalating violence against Bangladeshi Hindus, noting that the attacks intensified after protests over a controversial quota system spiraled into anti-government demonstrations. <h3>What are Bangladesh's civil service job quota rules?</h3>
Bangladesh has more than 1.9 million civil servant posts, according to a 2022 report by the country's public administration ministry.
More than half of the people hired to these jobs are not selected on merit but under affirmative action rules prioritising women, residents of less developed districts and other disadvantaged cohorts.
The most contentious aspect of this quota system is the reservation of 30 percent of posts for children of freedom fighters who fought in the country's 1971 liberation war against Pakistan.
The current rules were introduced in 1972 by independence leader Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, father of current Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
Earlier protests by students in 2018 prompted Hasina's administration to cut down the quota scheme.
But last month the High Court ruled that this change had been unlawful and ordered the government to reintroduce the freedom fighter category it had abolished.
<h3>Why are the quota rules opposed by students?</h3>
Bangladesh was one of the world's poorest countries when it gained independence in 1971 and suffered a devastating famine three years later.
Its economy has grown dramatically in the decades since, thanks largely to a thriving textile industry that supplies the world's leading fast fashion brands and accounts for around $50 billion in yearly exports.
But the country still struggles to provide adequate employment opportunities for its burgeoning population of about 170 million people.
More than 40 percent of Bangladeshis aged between 15 and 24 were not working, studying or training, according to government statistics from 2022 -- altogether 18 million people.
Economists say the jobs crisis is especially acute for millions of university graduates.
Civil service posts offer a chance at stable lifetime employment but students say the quota system is abused to stuff government posts with loyalists of Hasina's ruling Awami League party.
They want the quota system dramatically scaled back to only apply to ethnic minorities and people with disabilities, with the remaining 94 percent of positions selected purely on merit.
<h3>How have the protests unfolded?</h3>
Protests began on July 1 with university pupils blocking major roads and railway lines in big cities around the country to draw attention to their demands.
They have continued nearly every day since, with high school students also joining the rallies, despite Bangladesh's top court suspending the quota system on July 10 for one month and urging demonstrators to return to class.

Police that night raided the headquarters of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, arresting seven members of its student wing and claiming they had found a cache of Molotov cocktails and other weapons.
Protesters have vowed to continue demonstrations despite the crackdown, while rights groups and the United Nations have urged the government to protect students from violence.

Since the 2nd of July, students have been holding sit-ins, organising marches, and blocking key roads and highways in the capital Dhaka and other major cities, demanding the government reverse its decision.&nbsp;
The protests have been called the Bangla Blockade.
The Bangladesh government used to reserve 56% of government jobs for specific classes. 30% of government posts were reserved for descendants of the 1971 Bangladeshi independence war heroes, 10% for women, 10% for residents of specific districts, 5% for ethnic minorities, and 1% for people with disabilities.
But, the decades-old quota system was abolished in 2018 after a nationwide student agitation forced the Sheikh Hasina government to end the 30% quota for the children and grandchildren of freedom fighters in the civil service
That provision was reinstated again on June 5, 2024, after the Dhaka High Court, acting on a plea of the descendant of a freedom fighter and six others, re-established the quota system, provoking the students.
But, the Supreme Court on the 9th of July suspended that order for a month, &nbsp;after the protesting students approached the apex court.
The students contend that they are not against the quota policy, but want the government to reserve only 6% of government jobs for women and specially-abled persons.&nbsp; Meanwhile, they say that their agitation will continue unless the provision is completely scrapped.

The Meteorological Department has warned that due to the cyclone's intensity and the air pressure difference, coastal districts and their remote islands and chars could face wind-driven tides 8-12 feet above normal.

At least 44 people were killed and dozens injured after a fire blazed through a seven-storey building in an upscale neighbourhood in the Bangladeshi capital of Dhaka late Thursday, authorities said.
"So far 43 people have died from the fire," Bangladesh's health minister Samanta Lal Sen told AFP after visiting the Dhaka Medical College Hospital and an adjoining burn hospital.
Police inspector Bacchu Mia said one more person died at Dhaka's main police hospital to bring the death toll to 44.
Sen said at least 40 injured people were being treated in the city's main burn hospital. "None of them are out of danger," he told AFP.
Fire department official Mohammad Shihab said the blaze originated in a popular biriyani restaurant in Dhaka's Bailey Road at 9:50 pm Thursday (1550 GMT), and quickly spread to the upper floors, trapping scores of people.
Firefighters brought the blaze under control in two hours, he said.
They rescued 75 people alive, a statement from the fire service said.
Fire officials told reporters they suspected the inferno was caused by a gas cylinder blast at the restaurant.
"It raced through the upper floor quickly as there were restaurants in almost all floors of the building. They use gas cylinders," one fire officer, who did not give his name, said.
The government has ordered a probe into the incident.
The Bailey Road building houses mainly restaurants along with several clothing and mobile phone shops.
"We were at the sixth floor when we first saw smoke racing through the staircase. A lot of people rushed upstairs," said a restaurant manager named Sohel.
"We used a water pipe to climb down the building. Some of us were injured as they jumped from upstairs," he said.
Others were trapped on the rooftop and called out for help.
"Alhamdulillah (praise be to god). We are sending down all women and children including my wife and children. We all men are in rooftop. Fire service stands beside us. Fifty yet to be down," wrote Kamruzzaman Majumdar, a professor of environmental science, in a Facebook post.
He was later rescued safely.
Hundreds of anxious family members rushed to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital as ambulances brought the dead and injured to the clinic.
Fires in apartment buildings and factory complexes are common in Bangladesh due to lax enforcement of safety rules.
In July 2021, at least 52 people were killed including many children when a fire swept through a food processing factory.
In February 2019, 70 people died when an inferno ripped through several Dhaka apartment blocks.

Hasina, 76, bagged 249,965 votes while her nearest rival M Nizam Uddin Lashkar from the Bangladesh Supreme Party secured just 469 votes, bdnews24 reported.

She has won the Gopalganj-3 seat for the eighth time since 1986.
Prime Minister Hasina, who has been ruling the strategically located South Asian nation since 2009, is set to secure a record fourth consecutive term and fifth overall term.
The ruling Awami League candidates are leading in most of the seats, according to the results so far.
Earlier, the counting of votes started after the polling ended in the general elections which registered low voter turnout.
According to the initial estimates, the voter turnout was around 40 per cent but the figure could change after the final count, Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Habibul Awal said.
