China said Tuesday it will &ldquo;resolutely safeguard its legitimate rights and interests&rdquo; over the shooting down of a suspected Chinese spy balloon by the United States, as relations between the two countries deteriorate further.
The balloon prompted U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken to cancel a highly-anticipated visit to Beijing this week that had offered slight hopes for an improvement in relations.
China claims it was a civilian balloon used for meteorological research but has refused to say to which government department or company it belongs.
Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning on Tuesday reiterated that the &ldquo;unmanned airship&rdquo; posed no threat and entered U.S. airspace accidentally.
Mao again criticised the U.S. for overreacting rather than adopting a &ldquo;calm, professional" manner, and for using force in bringing the balloon down Saturday in the Atlantic Ocean just off the U.S. coast.
Asked if China wanted the debris returned, she only reasserted that the balloon &ldquo;belongs to China."&nbsp;

China had 8.5 lakh fewer people at the end of 2022 as compared to 2021, according to the National Bureau of Statistics. The count excluded the populations of Hong Kong, Macao, foreign residents, and Taiwan, which Beijing claims as its territory.
That left a total of 1.411.75 billion, with 9.56 million births against 10.41 million deaths, the bureau said at a briefing on 17 January 2023.
Men also continued to outnumber women by 722.06 million to 689.69 million, the bureau said, a result of the now-abandoned one-child policy and a traditional preference for male offspring to carry on the family name.
China has long been the world's most populous nation, but is expected to soon be overtaken by India.
The last time China is believed to have recorded a population decline was during the Great Leap Forward at the end of the 1950s, Mao Zedon'g disastrous drive for collective farming and industrialization that produced a massive famine killing tens of millions of people.

China's National Health Commission said it scaled down its daily Covid- 19 report after authorities made mass-PCR testing optional and allowed people with mild symptoms&nbsp; to recuperate at home.

&nbsp;China's National Health Commission scaled down its daily Covid-19 report starting Wednesday in response to a sharp decline in PCR testing since the government eased anti-virus measures after daily cases hit record highs.
A notice on the commission's website said it stopped publishing daily figures on numbers of Covid-19 cases where no symptoms are detected since it was &ldquo;impossible to accurately grasp the actual number of asymptomatic infected persons,&rdquo; which have generally accounted for the vast majority of new infections.
The only numbers they're reporting are confirmed cases detected in public testing facilities.

This poses a key challenge for China as it relaxes its strict &ldquo;zero-Covid&rdquo; policy. With mass-PCR testing no longer obligatory and people with mild symptoms allowed to recuperate at home rather than in one of the field hospitals that became notorious for overcrowding and poor hygiene, it has grown more difficult to gauge the true number of cases.
Beijing's streets have grown eerily quiet, with lines forming outside fever clinics &mdash; the number of which has been increased from 94 to 303 &mdash; and at pharmacies, where cold and flu medications are harder to find.
Despite a push to boost vaccinations among the elderly, two centres set up in Beijing to administer shots were empty Tuesday except for medical personnel. Despite fears of a major outbreak, there was little evidence of a surge in patient numbers.
At the China-Japan Friendship Hospital's fever clinic in Beijing, a dozen people waited for nucleic acid test results. Nurses in full-body white protective gear checked in patients one by one.
A few kilometres (miles) south, at Chaoyang Hospital, about a dozen people waited in a line of blue tents, deflecting winds amid subzero temperatures. One person in the queue took out a bottle of disinfectant and sprayed it around her as she waited.
Across the street at Gaoji Baikang Pharmacy, around a dozen people waited in line for cough medication and Chinese herbal remedies. A sign at the front told waiting customers: &ldquo;Avoid panic and hoarding, we are doing all we can to stock up to fulfil your medicinal needs.&rdquo; A man coming out had bought two packages of Lianhua Qingwen, a Chinese herbal remedy, saying that each customer was restricted from buying any more than that.
Inquiries to health hotlines have increased six-fold, according to state media.
Without asymptomatic cases being counted, China reported just 2,249 &ldquo;confirmed&rdquo; infections Wednesday, bringing the nation's total to 369,918 &mdash; more than double the level on Oct 1. It has recorded 5,235 deaths &mdash; compared with 1.1 million in the United States.
China's government-supplied figures have not been independently verified and questions have been raised about whether the Communist Party has sought to minimise numbers of cases and deaths.
Since Tuesday, the US consulates in the northeastern Chinese city of Shenyang and the central city of Wuhan have been offering only emergency services &ldquo;in response to increased number of COVID-19 cases,&rdquo; the State Department said.
President Xi Jinping's government is still officially committed to stopping virus transmission. But the latest moves suggest the party will tolerate more cases without quarantines or shutting down travel or businesses as it winds down its &ldquo;zero-COVID&rdquo; strategy.
Despite relaxed rules, restaurants were mostly closed or empty in the capital. Many businesses are having difficulty finding enough staff who haven't gotten infected. Sanlitun, one of Beijing's most popular shopping districts, was deserted despite having its anti-COVID-19 fences taken down in recent days.
Hospitals have also reportedly been struggling to remain staffed, while packages were piling up at distribution points because of a shortage of China's ubiquitous motorized tricycle delivery drivers.
Some Chinese universities say they will allow students to finish the semester from home in hopes of reducing the potential for a bigger COVID-19 outbreak during the January Lunar New Year travel rush.
Starting Tuesday, China also stopped tracking some travel, potentially reducing the likelihood people will be forced into quarantine for visiting COVID-19 hot spots.
Despite that, China's international borders remain largely shut and there has been no word on when restrictions will be eased on inbound travellers and Chinese wanting to go overseas.
The move follows the government's dramatic announcement last week that it was ending many of the strictest measures, following three years during which it enforced some of the world's tightest virus restrictions.
Last month in Beijing and several other cities, protests over the restrictions grew into calls for Xi and the Communist Party to step down &mdash; a level of public dissent not seen in decades. The party responded with a massive show of force and an unknown number of people were arrested at the protests or in the days following.
Experts warn there still is a chance the party might reverse course and reimpose restrictions if a large-scale outbreak ensues.

The announcement was made ahead of the memorial meeting held by the ruling Communist Party of China (CPC) for former President of the country Jiang Zemin who passed away on November 30.
Beijing continues to report a high number of Covid-19 cases. On Monday, the city reported 2,260 Covid infections.
The Chinese mainland on Monday reported 4,988 locally transmitted confirmed Covid-19 cases and 22,859 local asymptomatic infections, China&rsquo;s National Health Commission said on Tuesday.

87-year-old man dies of Covid-19 in China's Beijing 

China reported its first new death from COVID-19 in nearly half a year in Beijing.

China on Sunday announced its first new death from COVID-19 in nearly half a year as strict new measures are imposed in Beijing and across the country to ward against new outbreaks.
The death of the 87-year-old Beijing man was the first reported by the National Health Commission since May 26, bringing the total death toll to 5,227. The previous death was reported in Shanghai, which underwent a major surge in cases over the summer.
While China has an overall vaccination rate of more than 92 per cent having received at least one dose, that number is considerably lower among the elderly, particularly those over age 80. The commission did not give details on the vaccination status of the deceased.

Next was the headquarters of State Grid, which manages electricity supply in Beijing. Normal thoroughfare was seen outside the building. Occupying the second ring road near the offices of the Chinese foreign ministry was civilian traffic, and no military convoys. At Beijing's central railway station, the journalist found only civilian passengers milling about.
As the coup rumours gained prominence, experts on Chinese affairs were quick to shoot them down.
They reasoned that Xi Jinping's absence was probably due to quarantine after foreign travel. Also, the cancellation of flights has been common amid strict Covid restrictions in the country. Experts also said that a military coup in China is unlikely as the PLA remains under the firm control of politicians. Another reason that experts called the coup rumours unfounded was Xi Jinping's continuous crackdown on his opponents and dissidents, especially as he is close to securing an unprecedented third term in office.

The only time athletes, media persons or staff have been asked to remain confined to the bio-bubble, they can only travel in the Winter Olympics ferry and that also only to the venues and back. The restrictions also apply to the sanitation workers and the volunteers who live in Beijing, they will have to stay in bio-bubble for months. Everyone involved has to have KN 95 or N 95 masks on all the time and RTPCR tests for the virus is being conducted by the authorities daily. While over 12,500 foreigners have arrived in Beijing for the Winter Olympics, the officials have conducted 8 lakh RTPCR tests, out of which 387 people had tested positive.

The torch relay would last from February 2 to 4 in three competition areas in Beijing, Yanqing and Zhangjiakou, including 11 sites outside the closed-loop. Due to the pandemic prevention, only a few selected citizens would be allowed to participate in the torch relay. Others can interact through online an activity.
Beijing reported its first local omicron infection on January 15 and 11 cases had been confirmed on Thursday.

Alpine skier Mohammad Arif Khan has become the first Indian to be eligible to compete at the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics in the slalom event.
Arif Khan finished ninth, 10th and twice finished 11th in four slalom events over the past week at the Ski Dubai, Mall of the Emirates in Dubai. The four slalom events in Dubai were the only four competitions Mohammad Arif Khan has taken part in during the qualification period.
The Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics will be held from February 4 to 20. The men&rsquo;s slalom event will be held on February 16.
Khan, who has represented India in more than 100 ski events held across the world, had been undergoing ski training in Europe for the most part of this year. He is set to become the only skier to represent India in Winter Olympics this year.
