Amid the sounding of a Covid alert in India, domestic vaccine-makers Bharat Biotech and Biological E Ltd are sitting on a stockpile of 25 crore doses.
While Biological E has a stock of 20 crore doses of its vaccine Corbevax, Bharat Biotech has 5 crore doses ready of Covaxin. This was reported by news agency PTI quoting company officials.
The vaccines are ready to be dispatched.
This comes even as the Union government has cleared Bharat Biotech's nasal vaccine iNCOVACC as a booster dose.
Dr Vikram Paradkar, Executive Vice President (Manufacturing), Biological E, said the firm produced about 30 crore doses of Corbevax in total, abiding by the vaccine manufacturing commitment to the Central government.
In March 2022, Biological E successfully supplied 10 crore doses to the government.
"Currently, we have approximately 20 crore (200 million) doses that are fully tested and ready for supply, as and when we receive orders. Additionally, we manufactured 20 crore doses equivalent of the antigen which will help us ramp up the manufacturing of the Corbevax finished product quickly," Paradkar told PTI.

Days after the Indian government cleared the use of the country's first nasal vaccine against Covid-19, the inoculant's price has been revealed.
Bharat Biotech's iNCOVACC is set to cost ₹800, excluding a Goods and Services Tax (GST) levy for private markets. The needle-less vaccine will cost ₹325 plus GST for government supplies.
A press release from the vaccine maker said the jab will be rolled out in the fourth week of January, 2023.
The approval of the nasal vaccine was announced on 23 December 2022. It will be available at private hospitals as a booster dose for adults who have already been injected with 2 doses of either Covaxin or Covishield.
The ministry's approval for the intranasal vaccine as a booster comes amid a spurt in Covid cases in China and some other countries.
The nasal vaccine -- BBV154 -- had received approval of the Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) in November for restricted use in an emergency situation for those above 18 years as a heterologous booster dose.
The intranasal vaccine iNCOVACC is a recombinant replication deficient adenovirus vectored vaccine with a pre-fusion stabilised spike protein. This vaccine candidate was evaluated in phase I, II and III clinical trials with successful results, the Hyderabad-based vaccine-maker had said in a statement.
Clinical trials were conducted to evaluate iNCOVACC as a primary dose schedule as well as a heterologous booster dose for subjects who have previously received two doses of either Covishield or Covaxin.

The needle-less vaccine is recommended as the first booster, and not meant for those who have already taken a precaution dose, the report quoted Dr NK Arora, head of India's vaccine task force, as saying.
He added that "at the moment", taking a fourth dose of vaccine is of "no value", and this option is also not available on the vaccination app CoWIN.
"Let us assume you want to take another fourth dose. There is a concept what is called as 'antigen sink'. If a person is repeatedly immunised with a particular type of antigen, the body stops responding, or responds poorly.
And that is why initially mRNA vaccines are given with a gap of six months. Later on, people are taking at three-month gap. But it has not helped too much in that case. Therefore, at the moment taking a fourth dose is of no value," Dr Arora said.

Covid-19 vaccine Covaxin maker Bharat Biotech on Thursday said there was no external pressure on the firm to speed up its development.
In a press release, the vaccine maker said with several hundred million doses administered worldwide, Covid-19 vaccine Covaxin has demonstrated an excellent safety record with minimal adverse events and no vaccine associated cases detected for myocarditis or thrombocytopenia.
Refuting some media reports around the approvals for Covaxin, the vaccine maker said it condemns the "targeted narrative" against the vaccine put forth by a select few individuals and groups who have no expertise in vaccines or vaccinology, the firm said.
"There was no external pressure to accelerate development of Covaxin," it said, adding the pressure was all internal to develop a safe and effective vaccine for the Covid-19 pandemic, to save lives and livelihoods in India and globally.
The Union Health Ministry on Thursday termed as "misleading" and "fallacious" media reports which claimed that regulatory approval for Covid-19 vaccine Covaxin was rushed due to political pressure.
It said scientific approach and prescribed norms were adhered to in approving Covid-19 vaccines for emergency use authorisation.

The reports further claimed that there were several irregularities in the three phases of the clinical trials conducted for the vaccine.
"These media reports are completely misleading, fallacious and ill-informed.It is clarified that Government of India and the national regulator i.e. Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation have followed a scientific approach and prescribed norms in approving Covid-19 vaccines for emergency use authorisation," the ministry stated.

Hyderabad-based Bharat Biotech International Limited (BBIL), the maker of Covaxin completed clinical trials of the nasal vaccine with about 4,000 volunteers. No side effects or adverse reactions were reported, news agency PTI reported quoting company sources.&nbsp;
Taking to twitter Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya shared the information on the new nasal vaccine. "With the science-driven approach &amp; Sabka Prayas, we will defeat COVID-19," Mandaviya said.

India began vaccination of those aged less than 18 at the beginning of this year.
It started with giving Covid-19 jabs to adolescents in the age group of 15-18 years from January 3 followed by&nbsp;children aged 12-14 on March 16.

The approval by the Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) comes following recommendations by the Subject Expert Committee (SEC) on COVID-19 of the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation(CDSCO).
The SEC had last week reviewed the application of both the companies seeking emergency use authorisation for Corbevax and Covaxin for use in children of five to 12 years and&nbsp;six to 12 years age group, respectively.
Biological E's Corbevax is being used to inoculate children against COVID-19 in the age group of 12 to 14 years. Covaxin has been granted Emergency Use Listing (EUL) by the DCGI for the age group of 12 to 18 years on December 24, 2021.
India began inoculating children aged 12-14 on March 16.&nbsp; The countrywide vaccination drive was rolled out on January 16 last year with healthcare workers getting inoculated in the first phase. Vaccination of frontline workers started from February 2 last year.
The next phase of COVID-19 vaccination commenced on March 1 last year for people over 60 years of age and those aged 45 and above with specified co-morbid conditions.
India launched vaccination for all people aged more than 45 years from April 1 last year. The government then decided to expand its vaccination drive by allowing everyone above 18 years of age to be inoculated against the viral disease from May 1 last year.
The next phase of vaccination commenced on January 3 for adolescents in the age group of 15-18 years.
India began administering precaution doses of vaccines to healthcare and frontline workers and those aged 60 and above with comorbidities from January 10.&nbsp; Precaution doses of COVID-19 vaccines to all aged above 18 years were allowed at private vaccination centres from April 10.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday met seven Indian COVID-19 vaccine manufacturers just days after the country reached the landmark of administering 100 crore vaccine doses, news agency PTI reported.
Representatives from seven vaccine makers including Serum Institute of India, Bharat Biotech, Dr Reddy's Laboratories, Zydus Cadila attended the meeting with PM Modi.

Brazil's health ministry official has alleged&nbsp;that he was under 'undue pressure' to sign off on the deal with Bharat Biotech&nbsp;for 20 million doses of Covaxin.

In a setback for Brazil's president Jair Bolsonaro, the country's Supreme Court has authorised a criminal investigation against him over allegations of graft in a now-suspended deal with Hyderabad-based Bharat&nbsp;Biotech to purchase Covaxin&nbsp;jabs.&nbsp; On June 25, Luis Ricardo Miranda, the chief of Brazilian health ministry's import division, and his brother, a lawmaker who was until recently allied with Bolsonaro, testified before the Senate committee over the allegations. Miranda has alleged he was under "undue pressure" to sign off on the deal with Bharat Biotech&nbsp;for 20 million doses of its anti Covid-19 shot, Covaxin. He also spoke of "irregularities" in the invoices, particularly in a $45 million upfront payment to a Singapore-based company.
