Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday received Bhutan&rsquo;s highest civilian award, the &lsquo;Order of the Druk Gyalpo,&rsquo; making him the first foreign Head of the Government to receive the honour.
The award has been conferred to Prime Minister Modi in recognition of &ldquo;his outstanding contribution to the growth of India-Bhutan relations and for his distinguished service to the Bhutanese nation and people.&rdquo;
"Honoured to be conferred with 'Order of the Druk Gyalpo' Award by Bhutan. I dedicate it to 140 crore Indians," Modi posted on X soon after.
King of Bhutan Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck first made the announcement about the award during the 114th National Day celebrations on December 17, 2021. On Friday, Prime Minister Modi received it during his two-day state visit, his third since he took over as the prime minister in 2014.
A statement from the Indian Embassy in 2021, when the announcement was made, said, &ldquo;As per ranking and precedence established, the Order of the Druk Gyalpo was instituted as the decoration for lifetime achievement and is the pinnacle of the honor system in Bhutan, taking precedence over all orders, decorations and medals.&rdquo; In 2020, Modi received the &lsquo;Legion of Merit by the US Government&rsquo; award of the US Armed Forces and in 2019, Russia conferred its highest civilian honour &lsquo;The order of St. Andrew&rsquo; award on Modi.
Earlier in the day, hours after he arrived in the Himalayan nation, Modi said he was grateful to the Bhutanese people for according to him a &ldquo;memorable welcome&rdquo; to their beautiful country and hoped that India-Bhutan friendship &ldquo;keeps scaling new heights.&rdquo; Modi&rsquo;s visit seeks to further cement India's unique and enduring relations with Bhutan as part of the country's &lsquo;Neighbourhood First&rsquo; Policy.&nbsp;

After a parliamentary delegation from Zambia watched protests play out in Lok Sabha last week, a visiting group from Bhutan witnessed fresh chaos on 6 February 2023.
Om Birla began the Lok Sabha session by welcoming the delegation to India and extended his warm wishes. Referring to the group as 'athithi' (guests), he said that the delegation along with their National Assembly Speaker Wangchuk Namgyel came to India on 5 February 2023.&nbsp;
The parliamentary delegation is expected to tour Mumbai and Aurangabad in Maharashtra apart from its visit to India's national capital. The visitors are expected to leave for Bhutan on 11 February 2023, Birla said. He ended his welcome address by sending good wishes to the entire country of Bhutan and its 'friendly citizens'.&nbsp;

The Himalayan country has, however, decided to slights tweak its 'High Value, Low Volume' toursim policy to make up for the economic losses it suffered in the past two years. 
Before Covid, Bhutan required tourists to book their travel through registered tour operators and had to spend a minimum amount, including $65 dollars tourism tax, daily during their stay. 
While the requirement of a package tour is no longer necessary, tourists have to pay $200 daily as tourism tax in addition to hotel and food charges. 
Visitors from India were not required to pay a tourism tax before Covid-19 but now Indian travellers will be required to pay a  daily levy of Rs 1200. 
The Bhutan govt has said that the Sustainable Development Fee will ensure that their economy recovers from the Covid-19 setback and that they are also able to make tourism sustainable. 
Bhutan is one of the very few carbon-neutral countries in the world.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi took a dig at the Centre on Friday over IMF's projection that the Indian economy is set to contract by a massive 10.3 per cent this year, saying it was another "solid achievement" by the government.&nbsp;Gandhi tweeted a swipe at the government by tagging a chart that showed IMF growth projections for 2020-21 for Bangladesh, Myanmar, Nepal, China, Bhutan, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan and India.&nbsp;"Another solid achievement by the BJP government. Even Pakistan and Afghanistan handled Covid better than India," Gandhi tweeted.

The chart showed that the Indian economy is projected to contract by a massive 10.3 per cent this year, the highest contraction among the countries mentioned.
"Another solid achievement by the BJP government. Even Pakistan and Afghanistan handled Covid better than India," Gandhi tweeted with the chart.
The former Congress chief on Wednesday had also taken a dig at the government over IMF growth projections showing Bangladesh closing in on India in terms of per capita GDP this year and described it as a "solid achievement" of six years of BJP's "hate-filled cultural nationalism".
The Indian economy, severely hit by the coronavirus pandemic, is projected to contract by a massive 10.3 per cent this year, the International Monetary Fund had said on Tuesday.
However, India is likely to bounce back with an impressive 8.8 per cent growth rate in 2021, thus regaining the position of the fastest growing emerging economy, surpassing China's projected growth rate of 8.2 per cent, the IMF said in its latest 'World Economic Outlook' report.
