India and Germany on Monday inked a mobility partnership pact and held comprehensive discussions on key global challenges including the Ukraine conflict, the situation in Afghanistan and cross-border terrorism emanating from Pakistan.
At a media briefing after talks with his German counterpart Annalena Baerbock, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said the mobility pact will make it easier for people to study, do research and work in each other's country and is a strong signal for a more contemporary bilateral partnership.
Jaishankar also strongly defended India's import of crude oil from Russia and noted that it is largely driven by market forces.

The German foreign minister arrived this morning on a two-day visit to discuss ways to further expand bilateral cooperation in a range of areas including energy, trade, defence and security and climate change.
At the joint media briefing, Jaishankar said that India's position on the Ukraine issue is clear that this is not an era of war and the conflict should be resolved through dialogue.
The visiting German foreign minister described India as a role model for many countries and noted that Berlin wants to bolster its security cooperation with New Delhi.
Asked about challenges facing the region from China, Baerbock said there is a need to assess the threats while describing Beijing as a competitor and rival in many ways.
"We now know what happens when a country becomes too dependent on another that doesn't share the same values," Baerbock said.
Jaishankar said the situation in Afghanistan and cross-border terrorism emanating from Pakistan figured in the talks.
He asserted that there can't be talks with Pakistan if it continues cross-border terrorism.
Earlier in a statement, the German foreign minister described India as Germany's "natural partner" and said that the country will have a decisive influence in shaping the international order in the 21st century.
"The Indian government has set itself ambitious goals not only in the G20 but also at home for its own people. When it comes to expanding renewable energies, India wants to push ahead with the energy transition more than before. Germany stands by India's side," she said.
The dramatic effects of the climate crisis affect us all, destroying livelihoods in Europe as well as in India, the visiting German minister said.
"That we want to strengthen our economic, climate and security policy cooperation with India beyond our strategic partnership, are not empty words," she stressed.&nbsp;

The Biden administration has appointed senior foreign service officer Elizabeth Jones as the Charg&eacute; d&rsquo;Affaires ad interim at the US Embassy in New Delhi to advance and expand the most "consequential" bilateral partnership in the world, an official announcement has said.
Jones, 74, who was the coordinator for Afghan relocation efforts recently, will depart to New Delhi soon, the State Department said in an announcement on Monday.
Currently, Patricia A Lacina is the Charg&eacute; d&rsquo;Affaires at the US Embassy in New Delhi. She assumed charge on September 9, 2021.
Jones has earlier served as the Assistant Secretary of State for Europe and Eurasia, acting Assistant Secretary of State for the Near East and Ambassador to Kazakhstan. She carries the highest foreign service rank of a Career Ambassador.
&ldquo;In India, Ambassador Jones will join our Embassy and Consulate interagency teams in advancing and expanding the partnership between our governments and people, a partnership that Secretary (Anthony) Blinken has called one of the most consequential in the world,&rdquo; the Department of State said on Monday.
The Biden administration had in July 2021 announced the nomination of Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti as the next US Ambassador to India.
However, Garcetti&rsquo;s nomination is yet to receive confirmation from the US Senate.
His nomination was initially blocked by Republican Senator Chuck Grassley because of allegations of inappropriate behaviour by one of his senior staffers.
Though the hold on his nomination has been lifted, the Democrats are reluctant to put his nomination to vote on the Senate floor as they believe that they do not have enough votes.
Garcetti has been Mayor of Los Angeles since 2013.
If confirmed by the Senate, Garcetti, 51, would replace Kenneth Juster, who served as the US Ambassador to India from 2017 to 2021 during the Trump administration.&nbsp;

Earlier in the day, Bangladesh prime minister Sheikh Hasina was welcomed by her Indian counterpart at the Rashtrapati Bhawan in the national capital where she was accorded the ceremonial Guard of Honour. Hasina arrived in India on Monday on a 4-day visit.&nbsp;
&ldquo;Trade between India-Bangladesh is increasing rapidly. We have decided to extend cooperation in the IT, Space and Nuclear sectors. Talks are also underway between India and Bangladesh on power transmission lines.", PM Modi said while addressing a joint press conference with his counterpart Sheikh Hasina in Delhi.&nbsp;
Notably, Bangladesh is India&rsquo;s key partner under the latter's &lsquo;Neighbourhood First' policy.&nbsp;
On September 5 2022, Hasina met India&rsquo;s foriegn minister S Jaishankar and raised the issue of instability in the Rakhine state of Myanmar and concerns that it could spread further.&nbsp;

The President of the Republic of Maldives, Ibrahim Mohamed Solih is scheduled to visit India for a four-day trip starting on Monday, in an effort to further bolster their relationship.
According to a statement issued by the Ministry of External Affairs, President Solih would undertake an official visit to India from August 1&ndash;4, at the invitation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Furthermore, a business delegation and high-ranking official would accompany the Maldivian President. &nbsp;&nbsp;
President Solih will meet President Droupadi Murmu and speak with PM Modi and External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar. Solih will also meet with an Indian business group in New Delhi in addition to his formal engagements in India.&nbsp;
Notably, Maldives holds a special place in India's Neighbourhood First Policy as one of its most important neighbours in the Indian Ocean region. All areas of cooperation within the partnership have shown remarkable expansion in recent years.
The two leaders of the nations will have the chance to assess the development of their extensive collaboration and give it new vitality during President Solih's impending official visit, as per the statement. &nbsp; &nbsp;

Maldives-India ties &nbsp;
Besides this, one of India's main maritime neighbours in the Indian Ocean is the Maldives, and overall bilateral ties, particularly those pertaining to security and defence, have been strengthening in recent years. &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; The relationship between India and the Maldives has been based on development cooperation, with New Delhi giving the island country funds for community development projects and lines of credit totalling more than $1.2 billion for infrastructure, PTI reported. &nbsp; &nbsp;
The island country signed a deal in August 2021 to construct a connection project sponsored by India, which is regarded as the biggest infrastructure project being implemented in the island country. &nbsp;&nbsp;
A 6.74 km long bridge and causeway link will be constructed as part of the Greater Male Connectivity Project (GMCP) to join the capital city of Male with the nearby islands of Villingli, Gulhifalhu, and Thilafushi, as per the PTI report. It will purportedly be the biggest infrastructure project in the Maldives, funded by a grant of $100 million and a line of credit of $400 million from India. &nbsp; &nbsp;
