Indian Meteorological Department has issued a &lsquo;thunderstorm&rsquo; alert for Ratnagiri, Raigad, Thane, Palghar and Kolhapur districts in Maharashtra in view of the extremely severe cyclonic storm &lsquo;Biparjoy&rsquo; gushing over the Arabian Sea.&nbsp;
Meanwhile, Mumbaikars welcomed season's first rainfall on Sunday as the cyclone moved closer to the Saurashtra Kutch region and is expected to cross the region and adjoining Pakistan coasts on June 15.&nbsp;

'Biparjoy' to intensify into extremely severe cyclonic storm in 12 hours, may spare Gujarat, IMD said; however a high alert has been issued and fishermen have been asked to not venture into the sea.&nbsp;

Cyclone &lsquo;Biparjoy&rsquo;, this year&rsquo;s first storm that took shape over the Arabian Sea on June 6 has now been classified in the extremely severe cyclone category.&nbsp;
On the IMD&rsquo;s intensity scale, it is the third highest category with hurricane-force winds of 167-220 km/hour.
According to the Met, Cyclone Biparjoy is away from Indian coasts and is unlikely to cause a direct impact, but heavy showers and strong winds are predicted in coastal areas of Gujarat, Karnataka, Goa, Kerala and Maharashtra this weekend.
&lsquo;Biparjoy&rsquo;, meaning 'disaster' or 'calamity' in Bangla, was named by Bangladesh.&nbsp;

The cyclone will bring a comparatively strong wind, in coastal districts such as Porbandar and Kutch, and Jamnagar gusting to 60 kmph and increasing to 75 kmph. Authorities have dispatched NDRF teams to the districts of Porbandar, Gir Somnath and Valsad.

Severe cyclone 'Biparjoy' may spare Gujarat says IMD

The cyclone will bring a comparatively strong wind, in coastal districts such as Porbandar and Kutch, and Jamnagar gusting to 60 kmph and increasing to 75 kmph. Authorities have dispatched NDRF teams to the districts of Porbandar, Gir Somnath and Valsad.

Severe cyclone &lsquo;Biparjoy&rsquo; will not hit the Gujarat coast as it is likely to pass at a distance of 200-300 km from the Porbandar coast, IMD said in its latest forecast on Saturday.
However, the storm will bring thunderstorms and strong wind in the western state in the next five days.
"During the next two days, the Saurashtra-Kutch region will witness a wind speed of up to 30-50 kmph, PTI reported quoting a Met official.
The met dept has advised fishermen to not venture into the sea for the next five days.

Severe Cyclone Warning: high alert in three states as 'Biparjoy' intensifies

According to the meteorological department, the cyclone is centered about 640 kilometers south-southwest of Gujarat&rsquo;s coastal Porbandar district.

IMD has issued a high alert in Karnataka, Goa, and Maharashtra and advised fishermen to not venture in the sea as very severe cyclonic storm 'Biparjoy' is very likely to intensify into an extremely severe cyclonic storm during the next 12 hours.
Met in its latest forecast said 'Biparjoy' will move north-northeastwards gradually during the next 24 hours, before moving north-north-westward during the subsequent three days bringing heavy rain and strong winds in coastal areas of Karnataka, Goa, and Maharashtra.
