Irish author Paul Lynch has won the Booker Prize 2023 for his novel 'Prophet Song'. It is worth noting that he had a tough competition with the London-based Indian-origin author Chetna Maroo's debut novel "Western Lane".
Paul Lynch, 46, won for his novel presenting a dystopian vision of Ireland in the grips of totalitarianism, something the author describes as "an attempt at radical empathy". Set in Dublin, "Prophet Song" tells the story of a family grappling with a terrifying new world in which the democratic norms they are used to begin to disappear.
"I was trying to see into the modern chaos. The unrest in Western democracies. The problem of Syria &ndash; the implosion of an entire nation, the scale of its refugee crisis and the West's indifference," said Lynch, who won the GBP 50,000 literary award.
"Prophet Song" was the bookies' favourite to win this year's Booker Prize and makes Lynch the fifth Irish author to win the prestigious prize after Iris Murdoch, John Banville, Roddy Doyle and Anne Enright.
"From that first knock at the door, 'Prophet Song' forces us out of our complacency as we follow the terrifying plight of a woman seeking to protect her family in an Ireland descending into totalitarianism. We felt unsettled from the start, submerged in &ndash; and haunted by &ndash; the sustained claustrophobia of Lynch's powerfully constructed world," said Canadian novelist Esi Edugyan, the chair of the Booker Prize 2023 judging panel.
Lynch received his trophy from Sri Lankan author Shehan Karunatilaka, last year's Booker winner for "The Seven Moons of Maali Almeida", at the awards ceremony held at Old Billingsgate in London.
Among the six shortlisted works was Kenya-born Chetna Maroo's novel set within the context of the British Gujarati milieu, which was praised by the Booker judges for its use of the sport of squash as a metaphor for complex human emotions. It revolves around the story of an 11-year-old girl named Gopi and her bonds with her family.
"It's also been called a coming-of-age novel, a domestic novel, a novel about grief, a novel about the immigrant experience," said Maroo of her shortlisted "sports novel".
Sarah Bernstein's "Study for Obedience", Jonathan Escoffery's "If I Survive You", Paul Harding's "The Other Eden", and Paul Murray's "The Bee Sting" completed the 2023 shortlist.
Each of the shortlisted authors received GBP 2,500 and a unique hand-bound edition of their book designed by six fellows of the Designer Bookbinders Society.
The keynote speech at the prize ceremony was delivered by British Iranian activist Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe, who was released from Evin prison in Tehran last year. She described how books had saved her when she was in solitary confinement and how a secret library is operated among inmates.

London-based Indian-origin author Chetna Maroo&rsquo;s debut novel &lsquo;Western Lane&rsquo; is among 13 books to make the cut for the 2023 Booker Prize longlist revealed on Tuesday.

'Western Lane' is one of four debut novels that make up this year&rsquo;s so-called &ldquo;Booker Dozen&rdquo; of 13 longlisted books, alongside &lsquo;If I Survive You&rsquo; by Jonathan Escoffery, &lsquo;Pearl&rsquo; by Si&acirc;n Hughes and &lsquo;All the Little Bird-Hearts&rsquo; by Viktoria Lloyd-Barlow.
Sebastian Barry&rsquo;s &lsquo;Old God&rsquo;s Time&rsquo;, Paul Harding&rsquo;s &lsquo;The Other Eden&rsquo;, Ayobami Adebayo&rsquo;s &lsquo;A Spell of Good Things&rsquo;, Paul Lynch&rsquo;s &lsquo;Prophet Song&rsquo;, Martin Macinnes&rsquo; &lsquo;In Ascension&rsquo;, Tan Twan Eng&rsquo;s &lsquo;The House of Doors&rsquo;, Paul Murray&rsquo;s &lsquo;The Bee Sting&rsquo;, Sarah Bernstein&rsquo;s &lsquo;Study for Obedience&rsquo;, and Elaine Feeney&rsquo;s &lsquo;How to Build a Boat&rsquo; make up the rest of the long list.
The 13 books, with authors spanning Malaysia, Nigeria, Ireland, Canada, the US and the UK, explore universal and topical themes &ndash; from deeply moving personal dramas to tragicomic family sagas, from the effects of climate change to the oppression of minorities, and from scientific breakthroughs to competitive sport.
&ldquo;The list is defined by its freshness &ndash; by the irreverence of new voices, by the iconoclasm of established ones,&rdquo; said Edugyan.
&ldquo;All 13 novels cast new light on what it means to exist in our time, and they do so in original and thrilling ways. Their range is vast, both in subject and form: they shocked us, made us laugh, filled us with anguish, but above all, they stayed with us. This is a list to excite, challenge, delight, a list to bring wonder. The novels are small revolutions, each seeking to energise and awaken the language. Together &ndash; whether historical or contemporary &ndash; they offer startling portraits of the current,&rdquo; she said.
Edugyan was joined on the judging panel by British actor, writer and director Adjoa Andoh; Hong Kong Chinese poet, lecturer, editor and critic Mary Jean Chan; American author and professor James Shapiro; and British actor and writer Robert Webb.   Their selection was made from 163 books published between October 2022 and September 2023 and submitted by publishers. The Booker Prize is open annually to works of long-form fiction by writers of any nationality, written in English and published in the UK or Ireland.  &ldquo;The range of experience, expertise and sensibility among this year&rsquo;s judges led them to seek novels that both advanced the form and allowed the reader to understand something about the world; books that would have impact and longevity; books that moved them &ndash; and above all, books of such excellence and subtlety that the judges looked forward to re-reading them,&rdquo; said Gaby Wood, Chief Executive of the Booker Prize Foundation.
The longlist will be whittled down to a shortlist of six books, to be announced on September 21 at an event at the newly reopened National Portrait Gallery in London. The shortlisted authors will each receive GBP 2,500 and a specially-bound edition of their book.
The 2023 Booker Prize winner will be announced on November 26 at an award ceremony in London. The winner receives GBP 50,000 and a trophy named &ldquo;Iris&rdquo; in honour of the 1978 Booker Prize-winning Irish-British author Iris Murdoch.&nbsp;

Indian writer Perumal Murugan makes it to International Booker Prize longlist

Tamil writer Perumal Murugan's book has made it to the longlist of the International Booker Prize 2023.

His book in the longlist 'Pyre' -- a translation of his original Tamil work 'Pukkuli'&nbsp; -- revolves around honour killing.

"I feel happy. I don't have expectations. I write about things that come naturally to me. Now also, I feel the same way," said Perumal Murugan as his book made it to the longlist of the International Booker Prize 2023.
As someone who once announced his own death as an author in 2015 and then resumed his writing, Murugan, whose works focus on village lives and caste problems in Tamil Nadu, has come a long way.
His book in the longlist 'Pyre' -- a translation of his original Tamil work 'Pukkuli' that happened in 2012 -- revolves around honour killing.
"Nowadays, the issue of honour killings is being highlighted in novels, stories, cinemas and social media. So, such incidents become news and come into the public domain. It is a very healthy thing (in terms of fighting against the menace).
"Around 10 to 20 years ago, nobody would have known about incidents of honour killings. Now, that is not the situation, and there have been a lot of social changes. I feel that the practice itself will go away in the coming years," Murugan told PTI in an interview over the phone from Tamil Nadu.
For the 56-year-old former college lecturer, the writings seek to dispel the notion that things are always good in villages, and the novel 'Pyre' has also tried to do the same.
"We assume that people are innocent... that's how it has been registered in common sense. But it is not... Humans, whether they are in rural or urban areas, there will be those with dirt and scams (associated with them)," he said.
Murugan, who lives in Namakkal in Tamil Nadu, is currently working on a new novel and also writing short stories. So far, he has authored 11 novels, 5 collections each of short stories and poetry and non-fictional works.
Out of these works, some novels and collections of short stories have been translated into English.
'Pyre' is among the 13 books from across Asia, Africa, Europe and Latin America to make it to the longlist of the International Booker Prize 2023, announced by the Booker Prize Foundation here on Tuesday.
In 2015, Murugan declared himself 'dead' and announced his retirement from writing following protests, litigation and the burning of his book Maadhorubaagan by caste-based groups. At a court case in 2016 centred on the book, the judge ruled: 'Let the author be resurrected to what he is best at. Write'. For Murugan, the statement was both 'a command and a benediction' to resume writing, according to the Booker Prize judges.
When asked about his profile mentioning that he had declared himself "dead" as an author, Murugan said those lines have become famous.
"Now, without those lines, no profile of mine is coming out. Those lines have become famous, and whenever my name is mentioned, these lines are inevitable...Life is different now," he remarked.
After teaching for more than 30 years, Murugan said he has taken voluntary retirement. When asked how he spends time, he said, "I spend my time writing, looking after family things and doing agriculture. Rather, I don't have enough time".&nbsp;

'A Sri Lanka that learns from its stories': Booker Prize winner Karunatilaka's hope for his country

Sri Lanka's Booker Prize winning author Shehan Karunatilaka has expressed hope that his crisis-hit country will soon understand that the ideas of corruption, race baiting and cronyism have not worked and will never work.

As he accepted his prize for 'The Seven Moons of Maali Almeida', the author that he hopes&nbsp;that 10 years from now the book is still in print but in a Sri Lanka that learns from its stories.&nbsp;

Sri Lankan author Shehan Karunatilaka, whose supernatural satire set amid the island nation's brutal civil war won the Booker Prize, has expressed hope that his crisis-hit country will soon learn from its stories and understand that the ideas of corruption, race baiting and cronyism have not worked and will never work.
Karunatilaka, 47, became only the second Sri Lankan born to win the prestigious GBP 50,000 literary prize at a ceremony in London on Monday night, after Michael Ondaatje who won for &lsquo;The English Patient&rsquo; in 1992.
Karunatilaka, who was born in Galle in 1975 and grew up in Colombo, said he decided in 2009 to write &ldquo;a ghost story where the dead could offer their perspective&rdquo; after the end of the Sri Lankan civil war, &ldquo;when there was a raging debate over how many civilians died and whose fault it was&rdquo;.
Karunatilaka said as he accepted his prize, &ldquo;I wrote this book for you. This is a win at a time when the country has lost so much. But let&rsquo;s accept this victory and go on to win the T20 World Cup&rdquo; and &ldquo;My hope is that in the not too distant future Sri Lanka will understand that these ideas of corruption and race baiting and cronyism have not worked and will never work&rdquo;, were much hailed in the social media platforms.
His remarks came after the unprecedented economic and political turmoil Sri Lanka witnessed that led to the change of the government headed by the Rajapaksa family in July.
&ldquo;I hope it&rsquo;s in print in 10 years&hellip; if it is, I hope it&rsquo;s written in a Sri Lanka that learns from its stories, and that Seven Moons will be in the fantasy section of the bookshop, next to the dragons, the unicorns and will not be mistaken for realism or political satire," he was quoted as saying by Colombo Gazette.
The prestigious &pound;50,000 prize, for a single work of fiction published in the UK in English, also gives the other five writers on the shortlist &pound;2,500 each.
The award winning book is a revised version of an earlier publication by Karunatilaka &lsquo;Chats with the dead&rsquo;.
President Ranil Wickremesinghe and the main opposition leader Sajith Premadasa both issued messages of congratulations to Karunatilaka while social media became inundated with messages from Sri Lankans, who are overjoyed amidst the worst economic crisis that has hit the country.
Karunatilaka and this year's other shortlisted authors, NoViolet Bulawayo, Percival Everett, Claire Keegan and Elizabeth Strout, were all in attendance at the Roundhouse in London, with Alan Garner attending virtually.

Karunatilaka&rsquo;s GBP 50,000 prize money and newly designed trophy were presented to him by last year&rsquo;s winner Damon Galgut, along with a designer-bound edition of his book and the GBP 2,500 given to each shortlisted author. As the winner, the Sri Lankan author can expect instant international recognition and a dramatic increase in global sales.

Writer Shehan Karunatilaka won the prestigious Booker Prize for fiction for "The Seven Moons of Maali Almeida," a satirical "afterlife noir" set during Sri Lanka's brutal civil war.
Karunatilaka, one of Sri Lanka's leading authors, won the 50,000 pound (USD 57,000) award on Monday for his second novel. The 47-year-old, who has also written journalism, children's books, screenplays and rock songs, is the second Sri Lanka-born Booker Prize winner, after Michael Ondaatje, who took the trophy in 1992 for "The English Patient." Karunatilaka received the award from Camilla, Britain's queen consort, during a ceremony at London's Roundhouse concert hall.
The judges' unanimous choice, "The Seven Moons of Maali Almeida" is the darkly humorous story about a murdered war photographer investigating his death and trying to ensure his life's legacy.
Karunatilaka said Sri Lankans "specialise in gallows humour and make jokes in the face of crises".
"It's our coping mechanism," he said, and expressed hope that his novel about war and ethnic division would one day be "in the fantasy section of the bookshop."

An event to honour International Booker Prize winner Geetanjali Shree here on Saturday was called off by the organisers after a complaint was filed against the author alleging there are some objectionable comments about Indian deities in her novel.  The felicitation event was to be hosted by cultural organisations Rangleela and Agra Theatre Club.
"The event was called off due to a controversy over a complaint against the International Booker prize winner Geenjali Shree," Anil Shukla, a functionary of Rangleela, told PTI.
"A man named Sandeep Kumar Pathak from Sadabad in Hathras district has filed the complaint against the writer. In the complaint, he has blamed Geetanjali Shree for alleged objectionable comments on Lord Shiva and mother Parvati," he said.  Spokesperson of the event Rambharat Upadhyay said that in his complaint, Pathak mentioned that the comments have "hurt the sentiments of Hindus".
In May, Shree became the first Indian author to win the International Booker Prize for her novel "Ret Samadhi", which was translated into English as "Tomb of Sand" by American translator Daisy Rockwell.
