Former UK prime minister Boris Johnson was unveiled Friday as the Daily Mail's new star columnist -- but attracted an immediate rebuke from a government watchdog to cap a tumultuous 48 hours.
A day after Johnson was given a blistering verdict by a committee of MPs investigating his "Partygate" denials, the right-leaning newspaper announced he would be writing a weekly column on Saturdays.
In a video posted by the Mail, former journalist Johnson said he was "thrilled" to contribute to "those illustrious pages", vowing to deliver "completely unexpurgated stuff".
Johnson joked that he would cover politics only when "I absolutely have to" -- and in a preview of the first column posted online, he dwelt on his never-ending battle to lost weight.
He described experimenting with an appetite suppressant to avoid the temptation of "raiding the fridge at 11.30 pm for the cheddar and chorizo washed down with half a bottle of wine".
But if he chooses to return to more heavyweight political subjects, Johnson now has a high-profile platform to pursue his vendetta against Prime Minister Rishi Sunak.
However, the ever-controversial Johnson was upbraided for failing to respect the rules governing outside appointments for former ministers.
The Advisory Committee on Business Appointments (ACOBA) is meant to vet all such appointments in the two years after a politician leaves high office.
But Johnson only informed ACOBA half an hour before the Daily Mail posted its announcement on social media, a spokeswoman for the committee said.
That amounted to a "clear breach" of the rules, she said.
"We have written to Mr Johnson for an explanation and will publish correspondence in due course, in line with our policy of transparency."
However, ACOBA cannot force a politician to go back on an appointment, and Johnson's habitual disregard for the rules was laid bare in Thursday's report by the House of Commons privileges committee.
He had already resigned as an MP after being sent a preview of the report, which found that he deliberately misled parliament when denying any knowledge of lockdown-breaking parties in 10 Downing Street.
The House of Commons can no longer vote on the committee's recommendation to suspend Johnson, given his pre-emptive resignation.
But it is due to vote on Monday -- Johnson's 59th birthday -- to decide whether his parliamentary pass should be withdrawn.
Deputy Labour leader Angela Rayner said that by ignoring ACOBA requirements, Johnson is "once again breaking the rules and taking advantage of a broken system for his own benefit.
"As he makes a mockery of the toothless ethics watchdog, this disgraced former prime minister clearly thinks the rules are for the little people," she added.

I have received a letter from the Privileges Committee making it clear - much to my amazement - that they are determined to use the proceedings against me to drive me out of Parliament.&nbsp;
They have still not produced a shred of evidence that I knowingly or recklessly misled the Commons.&nbsp;
They know perfectly well that when I spoke in the Commons, I was saying what I believed sincerely to be true and what I had been briefed to say, like any other minister. They know that I corrected the record as soon as possible; and they know that I and every other senior official and minister - including the current Prime Minister and then occupant of the same building, Rishi Sunak - believed that we were working lawfully together.&nbsp;
I have been an MP since 2001. I take my responsibilities seriously. I did not lie, and I believe that in their hearts, the Committee know it. But they have wilfully chosen to ignore the truth because from the outset, their purpose has not been to discover the truth, or genuinely to understand what was in my mind when I spoke in the Commons.&nbsp;
Their purpose from the beginning has been to find me guilty, regardless of the facts. This is the very definition of a kangaroo court.&nbsp;
Most members of the Committee - especially the chair - had already expressed deeply prejudicial remarks about my guilt before they had even seen the evidence. They should have recused themselves.&nbsp;
In retrospect, it was na&iuml;ve and trusting of me to think that these proceedings could be remotely useful or fair. But I was determined to believe in the system, and in justice, and to vindicate what I knew to be the truth.
It was the same faith in the impartiality of our systems that led me to commission Sue Gray. It is clear that my faith has been misplaced. Of course, it suits the Labour Party, the Liberal Democrats and the SNP to do whatever they can to remove me from Parliament.&nbsp;
Sadly, as we saw in July last year, there are currently some Tory MPs who share that view. I am not alone in thinking that there is a witch hunt underway, to take revenge for Brexit and ultimately to reverse the 2016 referendum result.&nbsp;
My removal is the necessary first step, and I believe there has been a concerted attempt to bring it about. I am afraid I no longer believe that it is any coincidence that Sue Gray - who investigated gatherings in Number 10 - is now the chief of staff designate of the Labour leader.&nbsp;
Nor do I believe that it is any coincidence that her supposedly impartial chief counsel, Daniel Stilitz KC, turned out to be a strong Labour supporter who repeatedly tweeted personal attacks on me and the government. &nbsp;
When I left office last year, the government was only a handful of points behind in the polls. That gap has now massively widened.&nbsp;
Just a few years after winning the biggest majority in almost half a century, that majority is now clearly at risk.&nbsp;
Our party needs urgently to recapture its sense of momentum and its belief in what this country can do.&nbsp;
We need to show how we are making the most of Brexit and we need in the next months to be setting out a pro-growth and pro-investment agenda. We need to cut business and personal taxes - and not just as pre-election gimmicks - rather than endlessly putting them up.&nbsp;
We must not be afraid to be a properly Conservative government.&nbsp;
Why have we so passively abandoned the prospect of a Free Trade Deal with the US? Why have we junked measures to help people to house or to scrap EU directives or to promote animal welfare?&nbsp;
We need to deliver on the 2019 manifesto, which was endorsed by 14 million people. We should remember that more than 17 million voted for Brexit.&nbsp;
I am now being forced out of Parliament by a tiny handful of people, with no evidence to back up their assertions, and without the approval even of Conservative party members, let alone the wider electorate.
I believe that a dangerous and unsettling precedent is being set.&nbsp;
The Conservative Party has the time to recover its mojo and its ambition and to win the next election. I had looked forward to providing enthusiastic support as a backbench MP. Harriet Harman's committee has set out to make that objective completely untenable.
The Committee's report is riddled with inaccuracies and reeks of prejudice, but under their absurd and unjust process, I have no formal ability to challenge anything they say.&nbsp;
The Privileges Committee is there to protect the privileges of Parliament. That is a very important job. They should not be using their powers - which have only been very recently designed - to mount what is plainly a political hit job on someone they oppose.&nbsp;
It is in no one's interest, however, that the process the Committee has launched should continue for a single day further.&nbsp;
So I have today written to my Association in Uxbridge and South Ruislip to say that I am stepping down forthwith and triggering an immediate by-election.&nbsp;
I am very sorry to leave my wonderful constituency. It has been a huge honour to serve them, both as Mayor and MP.
But I am proud that after what is cumulatively a 15-year stint, I have helped to deliver, among other things, a vast new railway in the Elizabeth Line and full funding for a wonderful new state-of-the-art hospital for Hillingdon, where enabling works have already begun.&nbsp;
I also remain hugely proud of all that we achieved in my time in office as prime minister: getting Brexit done, winning the biggest majority for 40 years and delivering the fastest vaccine rollout of any major European country, as well as leading global support for Ukraine.&nbsp;
It is very sad to be leaving Parliament - at least for now - but above all, I am bewildered and appalled that I can be forced out, anti-democratically, by a committee chaired and managed, by Harriet Harman, with such egregious bias.

President Vladimir Putin threatened to personally target Boris Johnson with a missile attack just before ordering Russian forces into Ukraine, the former UK prime minister has claimed.
The apparent threat came in a phone call just ahead of the invasion on February 24, according to a new BBC documentary to be broadcast on Monday.
Johnson and other Western leaders had been hurrying to Kyiv to show support for Ukraine and try to deter a Russian attack.
"He sort of threatened me at one point and said, 'Boris, I don't want to hurt you, but with a missile, it would only take a minute', or something like that," Johnson quoted Putin as saying.
Johnson emerged as one of the most impassioned Western backers of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
But prior to the invasion, he says he was at pains to tell Putin that there was no imminent prospect of Ukraine joining NATO, while warning him that any invasion would mean "more NATO, not less NATO" on Russia's borders.
"He said, 'Boris, you say that Ukraine is not going to join NATO any time soon.
"'What is any time soon?' And I said, &lsquo;well it's not going to join NATO for the foreseeable future. You know that perfectly well'."
On the missile threat, Johnson added: "I think from the very relaxed tone that he was taking, the sort of air of detachment that he seemed to have, he was just playing along with my attempts to get him to negotiate."
The BBC documentary charts the growing divide between the Russian leader and the West in the years before the invasion of Ukraine.
It also features Zelensky reflecting on his thwarted ambitions to join NATO prior to Russia's attack.
"If you know that tomorrow Russia will occupy Ukraine, why don't you give me something today I can stop it with?" he says.
"Or if you can't give it to me, then stop it yourself."

Business Minister Greg Hands, who is backing the British Indian ex-minister in the race, told ‘Sky News’ the post was “appalling”.
"I do find it distasteful and I do find it, less than a year after the stabbing of our colleague, in very, very poor taste, even verging on dangerous," he said.
Referring to the stabbing to death of Tory MP Sir David Amess by a constituent last year, he added: "It is not even a year since the stabbing of Sir David... so I think this is very, very bad taste, dangerous even," But an unnamed ally of Dorries pointed out that it was “obviously a satirical image of Brutus and Caesar”, photoshopped to provide political commentary.
"Some people of course will want to be wilfully offended," the ally said.
Dorries has previously attacked Sunak’s expensive dress sense as a sign of not being in touch with the British electorate and accused him of leading a “ruthless coup” against his former boss.

Ties between the United Kingdom and India will remain on a "phenomenal upward trajectory" under Indian-origin UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, that country's former premier Boris Johnson said on Saturday.
The two countries need each other now more than ever as "we live in dangerous and turbulent times", he said.
Johnson also called on the two countries to finalise a free trade agreement, saying he could not wait till next Diwali for it.
"No mission that I have led has been as successful as the one in April this year when I arrived in Gujarat and was greeted like Sachin Tendulkar. There were pictures of me everywhere and literally thousands of people dancing on the streets," Johnson said in his address at the Hindustan Times Leadership Summit here.
Noting that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and he had discussed the future of India-UK partnership during his India visit, Johnson said they had "fantastic talks" and there have been results.

"India has become the number one supplier of overseas students to the UK. There are 1,08,000 Indian students in the UK to support our education industry," he said.
The former British prime minister pointed out that even without a free trade agreement, the two countries have seen bilateral trade go up by 28 per cent.
"Let us finally deliver that free trade agreement which mysteriously seems to have developed a flat tyre since I left office. Prime Minister Modi and I said it will be done by Diwali. I'm not going to wait till the next Diwali before we do that free trade deal. I wonder what the holdup is," Johnson said.
"The government that I was proud to lead boasted more ministers who could trace their origins to India than any other government in the world. The crowning achievement of my approach is that my replacement himself is of Indian-origin," he said.
Last month, Rishi Sunak was installed as Britain's first Indian-origin prime minister after the brief tenure of Liz Truss, who had taken over after Johnson quit as the prime minister.
"I know that under Rishi, this relationship, so strong and so dynamic, is going to follow the same phenomenal upward trajectory. We need each other now more than ever because, as PM Modi and his external affairs minister S Jaishankar had said, we live in dangerous and turbulent times," Johnson said.

Rishi Sunak supporters claimed on Saturday that the Indian-origin former chancellor has hit the threshold of 100 members of Parliament required to make it to the shortlist for the race to replace Liz Truss as the Conservative Party leader and British Prime Minister.

Rishi Sunak supporters claimed on Saturday that the Indian-origin former chancellor has hit the threshold of 100 members of Parliament required to make it to the shortlist for the race to replace Liz Truss as the Conservative Party leader and British Prime Minister.
The 42-year-old frontrunner's tally continues to grow as former prime minister Boris Johnson flew back from his Caribbean holiday and his camp also claimed that he has the requisite minimum of 100 MPs for a possible leadership bid.
Neither Sunak nor Johnson has officially declared their intention to contest the leadership election, with Leader of the Commons Penny Mordaunt the only candidate to formally announce her candidacy so far.
However, the former finance minister has taken a comfortable lead with some heavyweight Tory ministers and MPs from different factions of the Tory party throwing their weight behind him and the betting odds also continuing to rise in favour.
"Rishi had the right plan in the summer and I think it is the right plan now," former deputy prime minister Dominic Raab told the BBC.
"I think he is the best placed candidate to provide some stability, to provide confidence for the millions of workers and businesses up and down the country,&rdquo; he said.
Raab warned against a comeback by the partygate scandal-hit former leader Johnson, just over three months after being forced to resign, pointing out that the UK Parliament is still conducting an inquiry into whether he misled Commons over the lockdown law-breaking parties at Downing Street.
"We cannot go backwards. We cannot have another episode of the Groundhog day, of the soap opera, of partygate. We must get the country and the government moving forward," he said.
It came as Johnson was pictured by 'Sky News' on a flight back to London from the Dominican Republic with his wife and children, having indicated to allies of his intention to have another go at 10 Downing Street.

The tally of MPs publicly supporting him for the comeback publicly stands at 53, with former Home Secretary Priti Patel among his high-profile backers and his loyalists are confident that he would hit the 100-MP mark required by 2 pm local time on Monday to make the shortlist.
&ldquo;Boris has the mandate to deliver our elected manifesto and a proven track record getting the big decisions right. I'm backing him in the leadership contest,&rdquo; she tweeted.
If only one candidate is left standing by then on Monday, then the online Tory membership vote due to happen next week for a winner announced next Friday, will not have to take place.
If any one candidate secures 156 MPs, then the race would be automatically narrowing to a shortlist of two &mdash; given the Tory MPs Commons tally of 357 and not enough to support a third candidate&rsquo;s minimum 100.
Meanwhile, there is widespread speculation among backers of both candidates that Sunak and Johnson may strike some kind of a deal.
According to &lsquo;The Daily Telegraph&rsquo;, Sunak is expected to reject any offer of a Cabinet role during the leadership race, given he is the frontrunner and had resigned from a Johnson government once already this year.
But no categorical statement of rejection has been issued, leaving open a job acceptance if Johnson does indeed emerge triumphant.
Sunak is being urged to offer Johnson a Cabinet role, such as home secretary, to agree to get him to stand back ahead of any voting with Tory members.

Most surveys of Conservative Party members with a vote in the leadership race have concluded that it will be 47-year-old Truss who will go on to become the UK's third female Prime Minister, after Margaret Thatcher and Theresa May.
Sunak was the clear frontrunner with his Tory MP colleagues, who voted overwhelmingly for him as a finalist in the race to succeed Johnson. However, the wider Tory membership base is believed to be still fiercely loyal to the outgoing leader and unhappy with his early exit from Downing Street. This loyalty is expected to have a bearing on the final outcome of the Tory leadership contest.
The two finalists in the race will find out who between them has clinched the top job at 10 Downing Street around 10 minutes before the public announcement.
The newly elected Tory leader will make a brief acceptance speech soon after at the Queen Elizabeth II Conference Centre in central London &ndash; near Downing Street. The rest of Monday will involve the winning candidate putting final touches to his or her Cabinet posts.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy presented outgoing UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson with Ukraine's Order of Liberty medal on Wednesday for supporting for Ukraine in the face of Russian aggression.
Zelenskyy said he was giving Johnson the award to reflect "what Boris did and is doing for our country and the whole of Europe."
The award ceremony came during what might be the UK Prime Miniter's final surprise visit to Ukraine in his current role as the country celebrated its 31st independence day.
"I want to thank you and the people of Ukraine for the incredible honour that you have done me," Johnson said. "I told you (when Russia invaded) that we were shoulder to shoulder with you and that is as true today as it was in that horrific moment."
While meeting President Zelenskyy to mark 31 years of Ukraine’s independence from the Soviet Union, the outgoing leader said Britain’s latest package of 2,000 state-of-the-art drones and loitering munitions will enable Ukraine to better track and target Russian forces.
The unmanned air systems are described as a step up in Ukraine’s current capability, improving their long-range surveillance and defensive targeting ability.
It includes 850 hand-launched Black Hornet micro-drones, which are specifically designed for the use in towns and villages, and are deployed to detect approaching enemy forces.
According to Downing Street, military personnel can be trained to fly the helicopter drones, which are smaller than a mobile phone, in under 20 minutes.
Each drone feeds back live video and still images to allow forces on the ground to defend urban areas safely.
The UK government said it continues to expand the training of Ukrainian military personnel.
