The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA), led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved an increase in the Minimum Support Price (MSP) for raw jute for the 2025-26 marketing season.
The MSP for TD-3 grade raw jute is set at ₹5,650 per quintal, reflecting a 6% rise from the previous season&rsquo;s rate, Union Minister Piyush Goyal stated.

<h3>Enhanced Support for Jute Farmers</h3>
The revised MSP guarantees a return of 66.8% over the all-India weighted average production cost. This decision is poised to benefit approximately 1.7 lakh jute farmers and indirectly impact around 40 lakh families associated with jute farming.
The increase is part of the government&rsquo;s commitment to provide at least 1.5 times the production cost as MSP, a policy announced in the 2018-19 Budget.
<h3>Significant Growth Over the Years</h3>
The MSP for raw jute has seen a substantial rise over the years, increasing from ₹2,400 per quintal in 2014-15 to ₹5,650 per quintal in 2025-26, marking a 2.35-fold growth. During the period 2014-15 to 2024-25, jute farmers received ₹1,300 crore in MSP payments, compared to ₹441 crore disbursed between 2004-05 and 2013-14.
<h3>Regional Impact and Employment</h3>
Jute farming is heavily concentrated in West Bengal, which accounts for 82% of production, while Assam and Bihar contribute 9% each. The jute industry provides direct employment to about 4 lakh workers and sustains the livelihoods of 40 lakh families.
<h3>Role of the Jute Corporation of India (JCI)</h3>
The Jute Corporation of India will continue as the Central Government&rsquo;s nodal agency for Price Support Operations. Any losses incurred during these operations will be fully reimbursed by the Central Government to ensure stability in the jute market.
This decision highlights the government&rsquo;s focus on enhancing income stability for jute farmers, boosting the financial sustainability of the industry, and supporting the rural economy through targeted interventions.

According to the government sanction, the fresh manpower will be utilised for manning 47 new border posts and a dozen 'staging camps' or troops bases along this frontier. The armies of India and China are engaged in a standoff in Ladakh since 2020.

&nbsp;The Union Cabinet on Wednesday sanctioned seven new battalions and an operational border base with a fresh strength of 9,400 personnel for the India-China LAC guarding force Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), officials said.
The proposal was cleared after the meeting of the cabinet that was chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
According to the government sanction, the fresh manpower will be utilised for manning 47 new border posts and a dozen 'staging camps' or troops bases along this frontier. The armies of India and China are engaged in a standoff in Ladakh since 2020.
The about 90,000 personnel strong ITBP was raised in the aftermath of the 1962 Chinese aggression and it is tasked to guard the 3,488-km-long Line of Actual Control (LAC) on India's eastern flank.

Senior Congress leader P Chidambaram on Saturday said Prime Minister Narendra Modi made the announcement to repeal the farm laws without holding a Cabinet meeting and alleged that it is only under the BJP that laws are made and unmade without prior Cabinet approval.
The Congress leader's attack came a day after Modi in an address to the nation announced the repeal of the three agri laws that had triggered a year of protests by farmers.
"Home Minister hailed the PM's announcement as showing 'remarkable statesmanship'. BJP President said that PM has 'immense care for farmers'. Defence Minister said that PM had taken the decision considering the 'welfare of the farmers'. Where were these worthy leaders and their wise advice in the last 15 months?" Chidambaram said on Twitter.
“Did you notice that the PM made the announcement without holding a Cabinet meeting,” the former Union minister asked.
"It is only under the BJP that laws are made and unmade without prior Cabinet approval," he went on to allege.
Hundreds of farmers had been protesting and were encamped at Delhi's borders since last November with a demand for repeal of the Farmers' Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Act, 2020, Farmers' (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement on Price Assurance and Farm Services Act, 2020 and the Essential Commodities (Amendment) Act, 2020, and forging of a new law that guarantees MSP for crops.
The Centre, which has held 11 rounds of formal dialogue with the farmers, had maintained that the new laws are pro-farmer, while protesters claimed the legislations would leave them at the mercy of corporates.
