Justice Chitta Ranjan Dash, who retired as a judge of the Calcutta High Court on Monday, said he was a member of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS).
Speaking at his farewell at the high court in the presence of the judges and members of the bar, Justice Dash said he was "ready to go back to the organisation" if they called him for any assistance or for any work that he was capable of doing.
"To the distaste of some persons, I must admit here that I was and I am a member of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS)," he said.
Demitting office after over 14 years as a high court judge, Justice Dash came to the Calcutta HC from the Orissa HC on transfer.
"I owe a lot to the organisation... I am there from my childhood and throughout my youth," he said.
"I have learnt to be courageous, upright and have an equal view for others and above all, the sense of patriotism and commitment to the work," he said.
Justice Dash said that he had distanced himself from the organisation for about 37 years because of the work he undertook.
"I have never used my membership of the organisation for any advancement of my career because it is against its principles," he said.
Justice Dash said he treated everybody at par, be he a rich or poor person, be he a communist, or from the BJP, Congress or TMC (Trinamool Congress).
"All are equal before me, I do not hold any bias for anyone or for any particular political philosophy or mechanism," he said, adding that he tried to dispense justice on the principles of empathy and that "law can be bent to do justice, but justice cannot be bent to suit the law".
He said that he was "ready to go back to the organisation" if they called him for any assistance or for any work they needed which he was capable of doing.
"Because I have not done anything wrong in my life, I have the courage to say I belong to the organisation, because that is also not wrong," he said, adding that if he was a good person, he could not belong to a bad organisation.
Born in 1962 in Odisha's Sonepur, Dash did his schooling in Ullunda and completed his higher studies in Dhenkanal and Bhubaneswar, following which he graduated in law in Cuttack in 1985.
He enrolled as an advocate in 1986 and was appointed as an additional standing counsel of the state government in 1992, which he continued till 1994, according to the website of the Calcutta HC.
He joined the Orissa Superior Judicial Service (Senior Branch) in February 1999 as a direct recruit. He was elevated as an additional judge of the Orissa HC in October 2009.
Dash joined as a judge of the Calcutta HC on transfer on June 20, 2022.&nbsp;

Abhijit Gangopadhyay announced on Tuesday that he is joining the BJP, hours after he resigned as a judge of the Calcutta High Court.
Addressing a press conference, he said he would join the BJP on March 7.
"I am joining the BJP as it is a national party, which is fighting against the corruption of the TMC in Bengal," he said.
He sent his resignation letter to President Droupadi Murmu with copies to CJI DY Chandrachud and the Chief Justice of the Calcutta HC TS Sivagnanam in the morning.&nbsp;

Calcutta High Court Judge Abhijit Gangopadhyay has said that he will resign from his post on March 5, hinting that he may join politics.
Speaking to a Bengali news outlet, the judge, who had ordered a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the teachers&rsquo; recruitment scam in West Bengal last year, said that he wants to work at the grassroots level.
&ldquo;I would like to enter the political arena to work towards the betterment of the common people and address grassroots issues. That journey starts on Tuesday,&rdquo; the judge told a Bengali news outlet.
He however didn't reveal which party he is joining or whether he is contesting the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.&nbsp;
&ldquo;Have not taken decisions regarding my candidature for Lok Sabha polls, but I would like to thank the ruling party in West Bengal (Trinamool Congress) for challenging me to enter the political field,&rdquo; the judge told Live Law.

Upholding the conviction of a man, Calcutta High Court observed that calling an unsuspecting woman darling will be seen as sexual harrasment.

Calcutta High Court upheld the conviction of a man who called a woman police officer &lsquo;darling&rsquo; while intoxicated.
Emphasising that the remark is sexually coloured in nature, the court also said it would be punishable under two sections of the Indian Penal Code. Justice Jay Sengupta clarified that the term should not be used to address &lsquo;unsuspecting and unacquainted women.&rsquo;
The Calcutta High Court&rsquo;s observation was connected to the case of Janak Ram, who has already been convicted for the remark. The inebriated man asked the woman constable &lsquo;kya darling, challan karne aayi hai kya?&rsquo; (Hi, darling, have you come to impose a fine?).
&ldquo;Addressing an unknown lady, whether a police constable or not, on the street by a man, drunken or not, with the word 'darling' is patently offensive, and the word used is essentially a sexually coloured remark,&rdquo; the court said, as per India Today.
The act would be considered a criminal offence under Sections 354A (outraging modesty of a woman) and 509 (insulting the modesty of a woman) of the Indian Penal Code.

The Calcutta High Court asked the West Bengal government to rename the lion named &lsquo;Akbar&rsquo; and the lioness named &lsquo;Sita&rsquo; after VHP filed a plea objecting to the lioness bearing the name of a Goddess being placed in the same enclosure of lion who is named after the Mughal emperor.&nbsp;
Both lions are currently kept in the same enclosure at Bengal Safari Park in Siliguri.
In an oral direction, the single-judge bench asked the state to avoid controversy and consider renaming the animals.
"Will you name a lion after a Hindu deity, a Muslim prophet, or Christian god, or freedom fighter, or a Nobel laureate? Generally, anyone who is revered or respected by the people of our country?" Justice Bhattacharyya asked, reported Live Law outlet.
The Additional Advocate General, representing West Bengal, told the court that the lions were named in Tripura and the state itself was already considering renaming the lions.
The bench also noted that the animals should not be named after revered figures, mythological heroes, freedom fighters or Nobel laureates.&nbsp;
"You are a welfare state and it is a secular state. Why should you draw controversy by naming a lion after Sita and Akbar? This controversy should have been avoided. Not only Sita, but I also don't support the naming of a lion Akbar. He was a very efficient and noble Mughal emperor. Very successful and secular Mughal emperor. If it is already named, the state authority should shun it and avoid it," Justice Bhattacharyya said.
During the hearing, the court also reclassified the petition by Vishwa Hindu Parishad as a public interest litigation (PIL) and redirected it to a regular bench that can hear PILs.

The case was filed under IPC sections 302 (murder) and 120B (criminal conspiracy), and relevant sections of the Explosive Substances Act.
The CBI visited Rampurhat police station during the day, and collected the case diary and documents linked to Bhadhu Sheikh's murder investigation, the official said.
"The CBI officers spoke to the police personnel there. They also spoke to witnesses of the murder and took stock of the situation," he said.
CBI officers also visited Bogtui Mor where Bhadu Sheikh was killed, he added.
The CBI took over the investigation of murder from the police, following an order of the Calcutta High Court.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday joined the virtual hearing of her petition challenging the election of BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari from the&nbsp;Nandigram constituency in the 2021 assembly elections.
The Bengal Chief Minister has filed a petition asking that Justice Kaushik Chanda exit the case over "conflict of interest"
However, the TMC supremo has been told that she &lsquo;can't seek administrative and legal intervention at the same time."
In a letter written to the Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court on June 16, Mamata outlined that Justice Kaushik Chanda was associated with the BJP in the past, and therefore there was &lsquo;reasonable apprehension of bias&rsquo;. She also added the need to "sustain the confidence of the public in the judiciary"

The Calcutta High Court on Friday granted interim bail to three Trinamool leaders, including two ministers, and a former Kolkata mayor arrested by the CBI in the Narada sting tapes case.
Subrata Mukherjee, Firhad Hakim, Madan Mitra, and former mayor and ex-TMC member Sovan Chatterjee were placed under house arrest on May 19.
The case was referred to a larger five-member bench after a 2 member bench failed to decide on the interim bail.
The HC asked the four leaders arrested in the Narada case to be released on a personal bond of Rs 2 lakh.
The court has also asked the leaders to not to give press interviews on Narada scam or interfere with the investigation.

Fearing a spike in Covid cases in West Bengal owing to crowding during Durga Puja, the Calcutta High Court on Monday said the pandals would be no-entry zones for visitors. The court ruled revelers would not be allowed within a five-metre distance for small pandals and 10 metre for big pandals while directing organisers to erect barricades at their entrance. Only organisers or puja committee members would be allowed inside the pandals, the court said as it limited the number to 25 for big pandals and 15 for the smaller ones. &nbsp;The HC also asked each puja committee to submit a blueprint on crowd management. &nbsp;Considering the pandemic situation, several pandal committees have made arrangements for virtual &lsquo;darshan&rsquo; this time.
