"We were completely surrounded," resident Alec Gellis told broadcaster KTLA.
"It was like 11 pm. We hear people screaming. I walk outside -- the sky is bright red.
"Within 45 minutes, it's coming down the hillside and then within an hour after that, we're fully surrounded, houses burning down on one side. Ridge is burning on the other side, mountains all around us.
"It got pretty scary at one point."

Law enforcement officers have ordered thousands of people to leave their homes, with many more told to be ready to flee if conditions worsen.
"There are approximately 20,000 affected citizens under evacuation orders and evacuation warnings," said Captain Jennifer Seeto of Los Angeles County Sheriff.
"Fire can be extremely unpredictable, and we highly encourage residents in the fire areas to be prepared. Have a plan and heed our evacuation warnings and orders."
Deputies had gone door-to-door urging people to get out as the flames began to spread on Monday night.
Malibu Mayor Doug Stewart said the fire had been "traumatic," but vowed that the city and its people would not be defeated.
"That's the way it is here in Malibu. It burns, it comes back, and we're resilient and strong."
Actor Dick Van Dyke, who celebrates his 99th birthday on Friday, posted on Facebook that he and his wife had fled their Malibu home.
"Arlene and I have safely evacuated with our animals except for (a cat that) escaped as we were leaving. We're praying he'll be OK and that our community... &nbsp;will survive these terrible fires," he wrote.
The city, which sits a short drive from Hollywood's major studios, has been home to some of the biggest names in show business, with present and former residents including Lady Gaga, Leonardo DiCaprio, Jennifer Aniston and Cher.

By Tuesday evening, the so-called Franklin Fire had swelled to more than 2,800 acres (1,150 hectares) and was still raging out of control, fanned by powerful seasonal winds that have led to forecasters hoisting a "red flag warning."
Los Angeles County fire chief Anthony Marrone said 1,500 firefighters were continuing to battle the flames, with the help of aircraft that were dumping thousands of gallons (litres) of water and retardant from the air.
Aerial reconnaissance showed an unconfirmed number of homes damaged and destroyed, he told reporters.
"The entire fire area remains under threat," he added.
Tens of thousands of people across southern California had their electricity cut off. Utilities frequently de-energize lines ahead of windy days to reduce the fire risk from downed power lines.
California Governor Gavin Newsom said the state had already secured a Fire Management Assistance Grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency to assist with the response.
"Fire officials and first responders are working relentlessly to protect lives and property from the Franklin Fire," Newsom said in a statement.
Wildfires are a feature of life in California and other parts of the US West, and are often exacerbated at this time of year by Santa Ana winds, which blow dry desert air from the interior.
Human-caused climate change is known to increase the likelihood and the severity of fires, with evolving weather patterns leading to longer, hotter dry periods that desiccate vegetation.
Experts say decades of policies stressing a zero-tolerance approach to wildfires have also left much of the countryside overstocked with flammable material, so when blazes erupt they tend to be faster, hotter and more destructive.

Newly released video shows US police shooting dead a kidnapped teenage girl they had been tasked with rescuing, in a chaotic incident on a busy California highway.
Savannah Graziano, 15, was gunned down as one deputy called her away from her gun-toting father, who had killed her mother a day earlier and abducted his daughter.
The episode unfolded in September 2022 when officers in San Bernardino County, east of Los Angeles, began chasing the vehicle Anthony Graziano was driving with Savannah in the passenger seat.
Footage filmed by a California Highway Patrol helicopter and released on Friday shows the pickup truck racing along at upwards of 110 miles (175 kilometres) an hour, with multiple shots fired at officers from inside Graziano's vehicle.
The chase ended after Graziano went the wrong way up a freeway entrance ramp and came to a halt on scrubland, surrounded by police vehicles.
Footage released Friday shows Savannah getting out of the car and walking towards an officer, who can be heard on another recording calling her over.
Radio traffic apparently from the helicopter warns officers that Savannah is there.
"The girl's out. The girl's out. Alright, girl's out, guys. The female... is out. She's out on the passenger side," a male voice says.
The footage shows Savannah crouching on the ground for several seconds before getting up and walking towards a group of police officers.
An apparent gunshot is heard on the video and Savannah is then blurred out as the voice on the radio says "Oh no."
Audio captured by a microphone worn by an officer on the ground records him calling Savannah over.
"Come to me! Come, come, come... walk, walk, walk," he says, as heavy gunfire rings out.
"Hey! Stop! Stop shooting her," he tells his colleagues. "He's in the car!"
Several shots can be heard after this utterance.
The narration on the video, which was released by San Bernardino County Sheriff Coroner, describes this moment.
"You can hear him calling her over and telling other deputies that the person who exited the truck was the passenger and for them to stop firing, but it was too late."
The teenager was declared dead in a local hospital.
Her father was pronounced dead at the scene. Multiple weapons and items of body armour were found in the pickup, along with hundreds of rounds of ammunition, police said.
The names of the officers involved have not been released.
The incident is being investigated by California's Department of Justice (DOJ).
San Bernardino Sheriff Shannon Dicus said Tuesday his department had been transparent in the aftermath of the incident.
"My hope is that this video will be watched in its entirety and provide insight into the unfortunate events that unfolded that day," he said.
"I would ask the public to allow the DOJ to complete its independent investigation before reaching a conclusion."
The video was released just weeks after deputies from the same sheriff's department shot dead a 15-year-old autistic boy who was having a mental health episode.
Both incidents have highlighted police use of force.
Violent encounters involving the public and police are not uncommon in the United States.
A tally by the Washington Post newspaper shows more than 1,100 people have been shot dead by officers nationwide in the last 12 months.
The figures are not official as police departments are not required to report incidents to the federal government.

Heavy rains lashed California on Sunday as Tropical Storm Hilary raced in from Mexico, bringing warnings of potentially life-threatening flooding in the typically arid southwestern United States.
With people already on edge, nature struck in another scary way: a 5.1 magnitude earthquake hit near the southern California town of Ojai but there were no immediate reports of damage or casualties.
As of Sunday afternoon Hilary's core was in California packing maximum sustained winds of 60 miles (95 kilometres) per hour, after barreling up Mexico's Baja California Peninsula, the US National Hurricane Center (NHC) said of this tropical weather event which was very rare for southern California. The storm was moving at the brisk pace of 23 mph (37 kph).
"Catastrophic and life-threatening flooding likely over Baja California and portions of the southwestern US through Monday," it warned.
"This is an unprecedented weather event," Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass warned.
Beaches were ordered closed and people rushed to stores to stock up on water and other essentials. Flash flood and even tornado warnings were issued for some areas.
Hilary earlier reached Category 4 -- the second-most powerful on the five-step Saffir-Simpson hurricane scale -- but was downgraded to a tropical storm as it headed towards the densely populated Mexican border city of Tijuana.
Despite the weakening, US Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) administrator Deanne Criswell urged people to take the dangers seriously.
"Hurricane Hilary is going to be a serious impact and threat to southern California," she said on CNN.
California Governor Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency for much of the state's southern area.
"Stay safe, California," he wrote on social media as Hilary approached.

State Sen. Aisha Wahab, the first Muslim and Afghan American elected to the state legislature, introduced the bill Wednesday. It adds caste &mdash; a division of people related to birth or descent &mdash; as a protected category in the state's anti-discrimination laws.
Those at the lowest strata of the caste system known as Dalits, have been increasingly calling for such legislation saying they have faced this kind of discrimination in the United States. But such policies remain divisive.
Wahab said caste discrimination is &ldquo;a social justice and civil rights issue.&rdquo; &ldquo;People came to this country so they can be free and can pursue their American dream without any disruption to their lives," Wahab said, adding that she heard about this form of discrimination growing up in Fremont, California, and living in the San Francisco Bay Area.
But some groups such as the Hindu American Foundation and the Coalition of Hindus of North America oppose such policies. They argue these measures will hurt a community that already faces hate and discrimination, and will specifically target Hindus and Indian Americans who are commonly associated with the caste system. The legislation is being backed by other groups such as Hindus for Human Rights and Hindus for Caste Equity.
A United Nations report in 2016 said at least 250 million people worldwide still face caste discrimination in Asia, Africa, the Middle East and Pacific regions, as well as in various diaspora communities. Caste systems are found among Buddhists, Christians, Hindus, Jains, Muslims and Sikhs.

Dramatic video showed a man hanging on to a corrugated concrete shear wall, to keep from being swept into the Los Angeles River on Wednesday, as water from the storms pounding California rushes beneath him.
A KABC/ABC7 Los Angeles helicopter captured the images of a Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) helicopter lowering a firefighter to the river.
The firefighter reached the man and hooked him to a device before the two were lifted together to the helicopter.
A statement from the LAFD says the man was taken to a hospital after suffering the effects of hypothermia. No other injuries were immediately found.
The statement said it was not immediately known how the man wound up in the river.

The bank failed after depositors &mdash; mostly technology workers and venture capital-backed companies &mdash; began withdrawing their money creating a run on the bank.
Silicon Valley was heavily exposed to tech industry and there is little chance of contagion in the banking sector as there was in the months leading up to the Great Recession more than a decade ago. Major banks have sufficient capital to avoid a similar situation.
The FDIC ordered the closure of Silicon Valley Bank and immediately took position of all deposits at the bank Friday. The bank had USD 209 billion in assets and USD 175.4 billion in deposits as the time of failure, the FDIC said in a statement. It was unclear how much of deposits was above the USD 250,000 insurance limit at the moment.
Notably, the FDIC did not announce a buyer of Silicon Valley's assets, which is typically when there's an orderly wind down of a bank. The FDIC also seized the bank's assets in the middle of the business day, a sign of how dire the situation had become.

More than 400 of those were due to arrive or depart from the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport. Another 5,000-plus flights were delayed across the country.
At Denver International Airport, Taylor Dotson, her husband, Reggie, and their 4-year-old daughter, Raegan, faced a two-hour flight delay to Nashville on their way home to Belvidere, Tennessee.
They'd braved slick roads and arrived early in case of long lines at airport security but the weather delay proved unavoidable &mdash; and ironic: Reggie Dotson was in Denver to interview for a job as an airline pilot.
&ldquo;I think that's kind of funny that we've experienced these types of delays when that's what he's looking into getting into now as a career,&rdquo; Taylor Dotson said.

The potential ice storm has power company officials on edge. In Fargo, North Dakota, the Wednesday morning temperature was minus 11 F (minus 24 C), so server Michelle Wilson wasn't surprised by the small crowd at the Denny's where she works.

The name of United States's Powerball jackpot winner, who won a whopping $2.04 billion has been disclosed.
California's Edwin Castro who won the jackpot in November 2022 wanted to stay out of spotlight, according to a report by The Guardian. However, officials have now revealed his identity but his other details such as occupation, age, address have been kept confidential in line with his demands.
After Castro reportedly refused to appear for a press conference, officials published his namewhile reading a statement on his behalf in an event. The statement read, &ldquo;I am shocked and ecstatic to have won the Powerball drawing.&rdquo;
Castro's winning ticket matched all five winning numbers and the Powerball number when he bought the ticket at a store in Los Angeles last year.
He collected the winning amount as lump sum of over $997.6m instead of choosing to collect the full prize in the form of annuity of over 29 years.
Castro is a former student of the California public school system, which receives charitable funds from the Powerball lottery. Castro said he was grateful that his win will help him contribute to the school system that once benefitted him.

At least three people were killed and four others were wounded in a shooting in California area early on Saturday morning.
Sgt. Frank Preciado of the Los Angeles Police Department confirmed the shooting happened just after 2:30 am in Beverly Crest, an upscale Los Angeles neighbourhood.
Of the seven people who were shot, four were standing outside. The three who were killed were in a vehicle.
Their identities were not released. Those who were injured were taken to a hospital and are in critical condition.
Preciado said he did not have information on what led up to the shooting, or if it occurred at a residence.
This is the fourth mass shooting in California this month.
The shooting comes a week after a massacre at a dance hall in a Los Angeles suburb left 11 dead and nine wounded and only days after a gunman opened fire on a pair of mushroom farms south of San Francisco on Monday, fatally shooting seven people and wounding one.
The killings have dealt a blow to the state, which has some of the nation's toughest firearm laws and lowest rates of gun deaths.
For the third straight year, the US in 2022 recorded over 600 mass shootings in which at least four people were killed or injured, according to the Gun Violence Archive.

The shooting followed the killing of 11 people late Saturday at a ballroom dance hall in Southern California.
