Australia's Cameron Green is likely to skip the white-ball series in Pakistan later this year and instead play Sheffield Shield to prepare himself for the big-ticket home Test series against India in December.

Australia's Cameron Green is likely to skip the white-ball series in Pakistan later this year and instead play Sheffield Shield to prepare himself for the big-ticket home Test series against India in December, according to head coach Andrew McDonald.
The same template worked for the 24-year-old in the ongoing Test series in New Zealand as he hit a career-best 174 not out in Australia's big win in the first match here on Sunday.
He was not included in the recent T20I series against the West Indies and New Zealand and instead earmarked him for West Australia's Sheffield Shield fixture against Tasmania in Hobart, where he struck an unbeaten 103 to provide an ideal warm-up for the first Test against the Kiwis.
"It's a big decision to leave anyone out of international cricket when they're potentially in the best eleven, so I'm glad he (Green) embraced that when we had that conversation with him, and the return on it is pretty immediate," MacDonald said.
"The next stress point on that will be next summer, leading into the Indian Test series where we've got Pakistan in ODI cricket and T20 cricket. I'd like to probably err on the side of preparing him through red-ball - we know how good a white-ball player he is, so you put a priority on what it looks like next summer.
"The white-ball cricket's important, but geez that Test summer's important, so I think with the results he's had (at Wellington) he'll probably come to us and say 'Can you give us a couple of Shield games before the first Test against India?'." Australia will tour England in September for five ODIs and three T20Is, followed by a white-ball series in Pakistan where they play three ODIs and three T20Is in November.
This will be followed by the five-match Test series for the Border-Gavaskar trophy in Australia in December 2024-January 2025.
Australia have not beaten India in a Test series for a decade, which includes India's past two visits to Australia in 2018-19 and 2020-21.
"He's become an all-three format player and we thought his greatest challenge was flipping between the formats," McDonald said of Green's increasingly vital all-round asset.
"We felt that by keeping Cam (Cameron Green) in one format for a period of time gave him the best chance, and that won't always be the case with everyone.
"Other players can go (more readily) from one-day international cricket into Test cricket, and it's probably the more experienced players who have done it over a period of time."
Green's importance to Australia's Test planning is underscored by the reshuffle of the batting line-up in the wake of David Warner's retirement. Senior batter Steve Smith has been elevated to the opener's position, and Green has been slotted into his number four role.
And even though Australia is also preparing for a T20 World Cup later this year, for which Green remains in the selection mix, it was deemed more valuable for him to play Shield cricket than in recent T20Is given he will be exposed to plenty of 20-over cricket in his upcoming IPL stint.

However, the hosts have been dealt a double blow ahead of the last red-ball match, as both coach Andrew McDonald and all-rounder Cameron Green have tested positive for COVID-19.
Following Travis Head's COVID-19 infection after the first Test match in Adelaide last week, which the home team won by ten wickets, Green and McDonald became ill. According to Cricket Australia, unless they feel too ill, Green and McDonald are also anticipated to participate in the game.

The ailment is lifelong and irreversible.&nbsp; Speaking to Australia's Channel 7, the 24-year-old remarked that his kidneys don't filter out blood like everyone else's.&nbsp; 'With chronic kidney disease there&rsquo;s five stages, with stage one being the least severe, and stage five being transplant or dialysis.&nbsp; Fortunately, I&rsquo;m stage two, but if you don&rsquo;t look after them enough, it easily goes back down,' Green stated.&nbsp; When he was born, doctors projected that he would live up to 12 years of age. Presently, he says that his kidneys are only 60% functional.&nbsp; After silently battling the illness for so many years, he has gone public with his issue with the hopes of helping other patients and their families.&nbsp; He stated in the video that some of his national team members and officials are aware of his condition.&nbsp; While he says that his cricketing career has largely remained unaffected due to his illness, there is one instance where he believes it might've creeped in.&nbsp; 'There was definitely one time up in Cairns, playing Australia versus New Zealand, I think it was pretty well documented that I had a pretty long day of bowling and a pretty long bat as well, and then had a cramping episode,' he recalled.&nbsp; It was an ODI game in September 2022, Green said, 'It took me a long time to realise that it was probably my kidney function that was affecting my cramping.' Cameron Green made a surprising choice when he was asked to pick the best team in IPL 2023.

Cameron Green is finally proving his worth as a player despite a hefty price tag of Rs 17.5 crore, that too when Mumbai Indians needed him the most. He is delighted that his team, despite initial struggles, is now one step away from reaching the IPL summit clash.
&nbsp;After a resounding victory of 81 runs against Lucknow Super Giants in the Eliminator, MI will face defending champions Gujarat Titans in the second Qualifier. The outcome of this match will determine the opponent for Chennai Super Kings in the final on Sunday.
Green revealed that even skipper Rohit Sharma acknowledged the team's tendency to start slowly, drawing from his wealth of experience in Indian cricket and the IPL.
"Obviously, all experience that he (Rohit) has got for India and in IPL, he kind of knows. I think MI never won the first game of IPL and he tries to mention that to us," Green told Star Sports.
"We obviously had a slow kind of start but you want to obviously start peaking at this time of the year, you don't want to be playing good cricket and slowing down now but peaking at right time," the giant Australian, who has scored 262 runs and taken six wickets," said the towering Australian, who was the top-scorer for MI in the Eliminator.
For Green, batting alongside Suryakumar Yadav is the easiest job in the world.
"I think it's probably the easiest job batting with him. You got to get him on strike, that's the plan. And if you get a loose ball, you hit it."
Green also believes that Gujarat Titans have been the best team in the IPL so far, covering all aspects of the game.
"They have been the best side throughout the tournament, except for a minor slip-up against CSK. They have all their bases covered -- their opening batters are in top form, and their spin twins Rashid Khan and Noor Ahmed have been difficult to score against. They are a formidable team, but we approach the match with optimism," Green said.

RCB batter Kedar Jadhav, a recent addition to the team from the commentary box, said impact player rule has shaken up a few things.
&ldquo;The impact player rule has made the teams and players braver and fearless. They have an extra batter as a cushion, so obviously they are expressing more and instead of 180 there are more totals above 200,&rdquo; he said.
Jadhav said it's going to be a tough fight for most of the teams who are in contention of making it to the playoffs.
&ldquo;If we leave out one or two teams, most of the teams are in contention to get to the top four. It is pretty wide open at this moment,&rdquo; he said.
The senior batter said his form in the Ranji Trophy and experience of playing in the IPL brought him back on the field this season with the RCB side.
&ldquo;I have played enough cricket to understand that training every day does help. It is important to have a fresh mindset, give (yourself) some space, so that hunger comes back for scoring runs and for batting long. I took a break after the Ranji Trophy but trained before the IPL,&rdquo; he added.
Jadhav said Virat Kohli&rsquo;s aggression and attitude worked well for whichever team he plays for.
&ldquo;That is the tagline of RCB - play bold (and) I think it came from only Virat Kohli. He has a strong personality, likes to lead from the front. Whatever it is, batting or bowling, he wants to contribute in winning games whichever teams he plays for.
"It definitely rubs off on the team. The players want to perform close to that level, or close to that intensity he brings in, in his batting or when he is doing practice,&rdquo; Jadhav added.

Cameron Green to undergo surgery, Mitchell Starc could end up missing first Test against India

Green, who picked a 5-wicket haul in the Boxing Day Test against South Africa, has a fractured right index finger that will require surgery.

Australian all-rounder Cameron Green has been advised surgery on his fractured right index finger.
Green, who picked a 5-wicket haul in the Boxing Day Test, was hit on the hand by a pacy Anrich Nortje delivery during his knock of 51*. The all-rounder though is expected to recover and be available for selection for the Test series against India that starts on February 9.&nbsp;
Green's compatriot Mitchell Starc though could miss the first Test in Nagpur, having injured his bowling hand during fielding on the opening day of the MCG Test. The pacer's recovery is expected to take longer than Green's since it's a tendon issue.
Both players have already been ruled out of the New Year Test in Sydney next week.

IPL 2023 auction saw Cameron Green bought for a staggering ₹17.50 crore by the Mumbai Indians.
The Australian all-rounder, who had a base price of ₹2 crore, is now the 2nd-most expensive buy in IPL history.
The Chennai Super Kings also went all out for Ben Stokes and bought the English all-rounder for ₹16.25 crore. Stokes didn't play the last IPL and was part of only 1 game in IPL 2021 before being ruled out due to injury.

Cameron Green's all-round show and Arjun Tendulkar's pinpoint execution in the final over helped Mumbai Indians beat Sunrisers Hyderabad by 14 runs at Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium.

With 20 needed off the final over, Arjun Tendulkar showed great composure, conceding just 6 runs and picking up his maiden IPL wicket to seal a hat-trick of wins for Mumbai.

Chasing a daunting 193-run target on big ground, SRH were off to the worst possible start. Harry Brook and Rahul Tripathi returned to the pavilion with just 25 runs on the board as Jason Behrendoff picked two in the powerplay.
Though Mayank Agarwal got stuck at one end, SRH kept losing wickets from the other.
However, Henrich Klassen's 36 runs off 16 balls did raise SRH's hopes. But once again, they lost wickets in heaps before Washington Sundar tonked Behrendoff for 19 runs in 18th over.

But Hyderabad managed to pull things back in the middle overs before Tilak Verma blazed away with 37 runs in just 17 deliveries.&nbsp;
With Mumbai needing big runs in death overs, Cameron Green stepped up to the occasion, hammering 20 runs in one of Natarajan's overs, and recorded his maiden fifty of IPL. Green remained unbeaten on 64 as Mumbai posted 192 for 5.
