Panorama India, an umbrella group for Indo-Canadian cultural organisations, held the parade on August 18th, the first Sunday after India's Independence day. The event at Toronto&rsquo;s Nathan Phillips Square was held amidst heightened security measures against Khalistani threats.
Flyers circulated before the parade called for a face-off between &ldquo;Khalistan Sikhs&rdquo; and &ldquo;Canadian Hindus&rdquo;.
As promised, Khalistanis crashed the event with a rally of their own. A viral video showed protesters holding Khalistani flags raising anti-India slogans, like "go back to India" near Toronto City Hall. They were also seen tearing Indian flags with knives.
The India day parade is held in Toronto every year. This year's event was supposed to feature the largest Indian flag outside the nation, and showcase 20 floats representing different Indian states.
But, much has changed in the past one year. Pro-Khalistan elements have been emboldened amid souring India-Canada ties.
The two countries have been engaged in a diplomatic standoff, after Prime Minister Justin Trudeau accused India of orchestrating the assassination of Khalistani leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar. India has rejected the allegations.

The accused were identified as Manvir Basram (23), Sahib Basra (20), Harkirat Jhutty (23), all residents of Surrey, and Keilon Francois (20) from Ontario.
The initial evidence hinted at targeted shooting, police said and the four accused have been charged with first-degree murder, India Today reported quoting Global News. &nbsp;.&nbsp;
Goyal was on the phone with his mother shortly before he was shot outside his home local media said.&nbsp;
"Goyal returned from the gym and stepped out of his car and he was shot. a minute of 30 seconds before he was shot he had a chat with his mother." Goyal's brother-in-law Bawandeap told media.

Karan Brar, 22, Kamalpreet Singh, 22, and Karanpreet Singh, 28, all Indian nationals residing in Edmonton have been charged on Friday with first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder.
"This is important because Canada is a rule-of-law country with a strong and independent justice system, as well as a fundamental commitment to protecting all its citizens," Trudeau said about the arrests on Saturday at a Toronto gala celebrating Sikh heritage and culture.
"As the RCMP stated, the investigation remains ongoing, as does a separate and distinct investigation not limited to the involvement of the three people arrested yesterday," Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) quoted Trudeau as saying.
He said that many in Canada's Sikh community are feeling unsafe following Nijjar's killing, adding: "Every Canadian has the fundamental right to live safely and free from discrimination and threats of violence in Canada." The ties between India and Canada came under severe strain following Trudeau's allegations in September last year of the "potential" involvement of Indian agents in the killing of 45-year-old Nijjar, a Khalistan separatist.
India has dismissed Trudeau's charges as "absurd" and "motivated." The presence of Sikh separatist groups in Canada has long frustrated India, which had designated Nijjar a "terrorist." After three Indian nationals were arrested in connection with the murder, Police in Canada said they had worked with US law enforcement agencies, without giving additional details.
The police suggested more arrests might be coming. Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) Assistant Commissioner David Teboul, the force's commander for the Pacific region, said Friday that he wouldn't comment on the alleged links between the three men arrested and Indian officials but noted the force is "investigating connections to the government of India." Meanwhile, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Saturday said what is happening in poll-bound Canada over the killing of Nijjar is mostly due to their internal politics and has nothing to do with India.
He said a section of pro-Khalistan people are using Canada&rsquo;s democracy, creating a lobby and have become a vote bank.
The ruling party in Canada has no majority in Parliament and some parties depend on pro-Khalistan leaders, he said.
&ldquo;We have convinced them several times not to give visa, legitimacy or political space to such people which is causing problems for them (Canada), for us and also for our relationship,&rdquo; Jaishankar said.
But the Canadian government has not done anything, Jaishankar said, adding that India sought the extradition of 25 people, most of whom are pro-Khalistan, but they did not pay any heed.
&ldquo;Canada did not give any proof. They do not share any evidence with us in certain cases, police agencies also do not cooperate with us. It is their political compulsion in Canada to blame India. As elections are coming in Canada, they indulge in vote bank politics,&rdquo; the minister said.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) described the raising of the slogans at the event as "disturbing" and said it illustrated once again the political space that has been given in Canada to "separatism, extremism and violence".
It said the actions not only impact India-Canada relations but also encourage a climate of violence and criminality in Canada to the detriment of its own citizens.
"The Canadian deputy high commissioner was today summoned to the Ministry of External Affairs with regard to the raising of separatist slogans on 'Khalistan' at an event which was being personally addressed by the prime minister of Canada," the MEA said.
"The Government of India's deep concern and strong protest was conveyed at such disturbing actions being allowed to continue unchecked at the event," it said.
"This illustrates once again the political space that has been given in Canada to separatism, extremism and violence," the MEA said in a statement.
It added: "Their continued expressions not only impact India-Canada relations but also encourage a climate of violence and criminality in Canada to the detriment of its own citizens."&nbsp;

While the exact number of laid off employees were not undisclosed, the Times of India reported that it was less than 100.&nbsp;

Canada remains committed to providing essential services to Canadians in India, including consular support and facilitating trade and business development, to uphold the longstanding ties between our two nations," a media relations official at the Canadian High Commission said.

Under pressure from opposition legislators unhappy about media reports on China's possible role, Trudeau had set up a commission into foreign interference.
The commission was shown a slide on Monday containing an extract of a February 2023 briefing from the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS).
"We know that the PRC (Peoples' Republic of China) clandestinely and deceptively interfered in both the 2019 and 2021 elections," it said.
"In both cases, these FI (foreign interference) activities were pragmatic in nature and focused primarily on supporting those viewed to be either 'pro-PRC' or 'neutral' on issues of interest to the PRC government."
"We know that the PRC clandestinely and deceptively interfered both in the 2019 and 2021 general elections," the report said. PRC refers to the People&rsquo;s Republic of China.
India had earlier refuted the claims and assured its commitment to non-interference in other nations' democratic processes.
"We have seen media reports about the Canadian commission enquiring into ...We strongly reject all such baseless allegations of Indian interference in Canadian elections," External Affairs Ministry Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said in February.
"It is not the government of India's policy to interfere in the democratic processes of other countries. In fact, quite on the reverse, it is Canada which has been interfering in our internal affairs," he added.

Indian-origin builder and head of a Gurudwara in Canada&rsquo;s Edmonton, Boota Singh Gill, was shot multiple times and killed on Monday.
According to a report by the Indian Express, an altercation occurred at a construction site linked to Gill's business. An Indian-origin construction worker allegedly shot Gill and civil engineer Sarabjeet Singh before taking his own life. Investigation is underway into the cause of the altercation.
Singh is reportedly fighting for his life.
Gill had previously filed police complaints about receiving extortion calls and threats on 2-3 occasions, the Indian Express reported. There have also been reports of other builders in Edmonton receiving threats and incidents of newly constructed homes being set on fire.
Edmonton police in January said a criminal network in India was behind the series of extortions.

A disheartening video is doing rounds on the internet showing a customer in Toronto abusing a pizza delivery worker. The viral video shows that an argument broke out between the two over the payment mode.
The video was shared on X by a user who goes by the name, Ian Miles Cheong. He wrote on X, "This delivery guy in Brampton, Canada was harassed by a worthless customer who's trying to make content for his TikTok. If anyone knows who he is I'd like to send him a huge tip."
In the viral video, the man, whose face is not visible, can be heard calling the delivery guy 'dummy' and 'stupid brown guy' while asking him to contact his workplace after he paid the money in cash.&nbsp;
The delivery agent was not carrying the change with him as the bill did not mention that it was a cash-on-delivery order.&nbsp;
The customer in the video was also heard saying, "You think I never ordered before? Do something, I dare you."
Several social media users reacted by calling the customer 'a person without a soul.' One of the users said, "One of the worst displays of a human."

The man named Arundeep Thind, 39, was arrested for making extortion threats against South Asian businesses in Canada.&nbsp;
Just after his release, Thind posted a message saying, "Putt bach ke", which means "Child, beware". Following this, Brampton City Councillor Gurpartap Singh Toor expressed concern for the Indo-Canadian community.
However, Thind claimed himself innocent saying that police were unfairly portraying him as a high-level gangster.
Thind was charged with extortion related to an alleged incident on January 26. He was released on bail after spending two weeks in jail. He has also contacted the Canadian media to assert that he is not a "criminal".

India on Thursday strongly rejected as "baseless" allegations of its interference in Canadian elections and asserted that the core issue has been Ottawa's meddling in New Delhi's internal affairs.
According to Canadian media reports, Canada's federal commission of inquiry into foreign interference is looking to examine allegations of meddling by India in the last two general elections.
"We have seen media reports about the Canadian commission enquiring into ...We strongly reject all such baseless allegations of Indian interference in Canadian elections," External Affairs Ministry Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said.
The Canadian federal commission's terms of reference is primarily to examine the possible interference by China, Russia and other foreign states or non-state actors in the 2019 and 2021 federal elections, the CTV News reported.
"It is not the government of India's policy to interfere in democratic processes of other countries. In fact, quite on the reverse, it is Canada which has been interfering in our internal affairs," Jaiswal said.
"We have been raising this issue regularly with them. We continue to call on Canada to take effective measures to address our core concerns," he said.
The allegations against India came amid a severe downturn in ties between the two countries following Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's allegations in September last year of a "potential" involvement of Indian agents in the killing of Khalistani separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar outside a gurdwara in Surrey city.
New Delhi rejected Trudeau's allegations as "absurd" and "motivated" and accused Canada of giving space to Khalistani extremists targeting India.
India had designated Nijjar as a terrorist in 2020.
India has been asserting that its "core issue" with Canada remained that of the space given to separatists, terrorists and anti-India elements in that country.

Canada had formed an inquity committee in 2023 to look into allegations of China's interference in its elections and now the panel is expanding its probe to look into whether India had any role in influencing the polls in 2019 and 2021. The probe is expected to begin from Monday. The committee has asked the Justin Trudeau government to provide documents relating to alleged interference by India.&nbsp;

Foreign Minister M&eacute;lanie Joly said Thursday that 41 of Canada's 62 diplomats in India have been removed, along with their dependents. Joly said exceptions have been made for 21 Canadian diplomats who will remain in India.

Joly said removing diplomatic immunity is contrary to international law, and said for that reason Canada wouldn't threaten to do the same thing with Indian diplomats.
"A unilateral revocation of the diplomatic privilege and immunity is contrary to international law and a clear violation of Geneva Convention on diplomatic relations. Threatening to do so is unreasonable and escalatory," Joly said.
Joly said India's decision will impact the level of services to citizens of both countries. She said Canada is pausing in-person services in three major cities in India.
India's Ministry of External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Arindam Bagchi had previously called for a reduction in Canadian diplomats in India, saying they outnumbered India's staffing in Canada.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said last month that there were &ldquo;credible allegations&rdquo; of Indian involvement in the slaying of Nijjar, a 45-year-old Sikh leader who was killed by masked gunmen in June in Surrey, outside Vancouver.
For years, India had said that Nijjar, a Canadian citizen born in India, had links to terrorism, an allegation Nijjar denied.
India also has cancelled visas for Canadians, and Canada has not retaliated for that. India previously expelled a senior Canadian diplomat after Canada expelled a senior Indian diplomat.
Trudeau has previously appeared to try to calm the diplomatic clash, telling reporters that Canada is &ldquo;not looking to provoke or escalate.&rdquo; The allegation of India's involvement in the killing is based in part on the surveillance of Indian diplomats in Canada, including intelligence provided by a major ally, a separate Canadian official previously told The Associated Press.
The official said that the communications involved Indian officials and diplomats in Canada and that some of the intelligence was provided by a member of the &ldquo;Five Eyes&rdquo; intelligence-sharing alliance, which includes the United States, Britain, Australia and New Zealand, in addition to Canada.
The official spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the matter publicly.
The latest expulsions by India have escalated tensions between the countries. Trudeau had frosty encounters with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the recent Group of 20 meeting in New Delhi, and a few days later, Canada cancelled a trade mission to India planned for the fall.
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has met with India's foreign minister amid the simmering row. A US official said the topic was raised. US officials have acknowledged that the fallout from the allegations could have an impact on relations with India, but have been careful not to cast blame in the killing of Nijjar.
Nijjar, a plumber, was also a leader in what remains of a once-strong movement to create an independent Sikh homeland, known as Khalistan. A bloody decade-long Sikh insurgency shook north India in the 1970s and 1980s, until it was crushed in a government crackdown in which thousands of people were killed, including prominent Sikh leaders.
The Khalistan movement has lost much of its political power but still has supporters in the Indian state of Punjab, as well as in the sizable overseas Sikh diaspora. While the active insurgency ended years ago, the Indian government has warned repeatedly that Sikh separatists were trying to make a comeback.
Canadian Immigration Minister Marc Miller noted in 2022 that India was the top country for permanent residents, temporary foreign workers and international students in Canada. Canada has evacuated a majority of its diplomats working in India outside of New Delhi to either Kuala Lumpur or Singapore after it gave Ottawa an October 10 deadline to reduce its diplomatic staff to achieve parity in strength following a row over the killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, according to a media report on Friday.
The report in CTV News, a privately owned Canadian television network, came after India earlier this week asked Canada to withdraw several dozen diplomats from its missions amid the escalating diplomatic row that erupted following Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's allegation linking Indian agents to the killing of Khalistani separatist Nijjar in June.
India rejected the allegations as "absurd" and "motivated" and expelled a senior Canadian diplomat in a tit-for-tat move to Ottawa's expulsion of an Indian official over the case.
The Indian government has given Ottawa until October 10 to reduce Canadian diplomatic staff in that country to a level on par with the number of Indian diplomats in Canada, CTV News quoted sources as saying.
Earlier reports pegged the number of diplomats that would have to leave at 41, but the sources CTV News spoke with said the ask is specific to one of parity.
"A majority of the Canadian diplomats working in India outside of Delhi have been evacuated to either Kuala Lumpur or Singapore," the report said.
Global Affairs Canada, the department that manages the country's diplomatic and consular relations, had previously stated that "with some diplomats having received threats on various social media platforms," it was "assessing its staff complement in India." "As a result, and out of an abundance of caution, we have decided to temporarily adjust staff presence in India," the department said, just days after Prime Minister Justin Trudeau accused the Indian government of being involved in the murder.
India on Thursday asserted that Canada must reduce its diplomatic presence in the country to achieve parity in strength and alleged that some of the Canadian diplomats are involved in interfering in New Delhi's internal matters, signalling a continuing slide in the ties between the two nations over the killing of Nijjar.
External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said in New Delhi discussions on the modalities to arrive at mutual diplomatic presence are going on and gave a clear indication that India will not review its position on the issue.
He said as Canadian diplomatic presence in India is much higher compared to India's strength in Canada, it is assumed that there would be a reduction.
"Our focus is on ensuring parity in diplomatic strength," he said.
The spokesperson, however, did not reply to questions on reports that October 10 is the deadline set by New Delhi for Ottawa to reduce the number of its diplomats in India.
"I would not like to get into the details of diplomatic conversation," he said.
It is learnt that the number of Canadian diplomats in India is around 60 and New Delhi wants Ottawa to reduce the strength by at least three dozen.
Asked whether Canada has shared with India any information or evidence relating to Nijjar's killing, Bagchi referred to External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar's recent remarks that if any specific or relevant information is shared with New Delhi, it is open to looking at it.&nbsp;

After reports of India asking Canada to withdraw half of its diplomats, amid the ongoing issue between both countries, Canadian PM Justin Trudeau admitted that his country was going through an "extremely challenging time" with India but asserted that Ottawa will continue to have "constructive relations" with New Delhi.&nbsp;
Speaking to reporters in Ottawa, Trudeau also said that it's important for Canada to have diplomats on the ground in India, amid a report by London-based Financial Times that New Delhi wants as many as 41 of 62 remaining Canadian diplomats out of the country, the Toronto Sun newspaper reported.
"Obviously, we're going through an extremely challenging time with India right now," Trudeau was quoted as saying by the Canadian newspaper.
He, however, did not confirm the FT report that India has asked Canada to withdraw 41 of 62 diplomats from the country.
Asked if his government would retaliate by asking India to remove diplomats based in Canada, Trudeau insisted his government would try to keep working with New Delhi.
"We're not looking to escalate, as I've said, we're going to be doing the work that matters in continuing to have constructive relations with India through this extremely difficult time," Trudeau was quoted as saying by the state-run CBC News.
