Compound interest waiver: SC questions Centre's affidavit

The Supreme Court on Monday adjourned its hearing on the issue of waiving compound interest on repayment of loans up to Rs 2 crore. The apex court said several issues are not addressed in the Centre's plan on waiving compound interest on loan repayments. SC has given one&nbsp;week to all stakeholders to reply to Centre's affidavit. The case has now been listed for next hearing on October 13.
On Friday, the Center told the top court that it would waive the compound interest component on small businesses and some other loans related to education and housing, and credit card dues to help borrowers. A group of petitioners had sought a waiver of interest on deferred EMIs, or interest on interest during the six-month moratorium period.
Apex body of private real estate developers, CREDAI&rsquo;s counsel Kapil Sibal sought a few days to reply to the government's affidavit explaining its stance, adding that a lot of government&rsquo;s facts and figure are without any basis.

In what is being touted as a breakthrough, researchers from the University of Pittsburgh, North Carolina among others say they are working on a drug that can prevent people from contracting Covid-19 as well as treat people who have been infected.&nbsp;
The Medical Center team said that they are yet to test the antibody-based drug on humans but the molecule has been 'highly effective' in preventing the virus in mice and hamsters.&nbsp;
Describing the potential treatment dubbed Ab8 in the journal Cell, researchers say the drug could be made available before the vaccine is released sometime in 2021.
Additionally, the UPMC&nbsp;doctors said this treatment 'won't have any negative side-effects in people,' which may not be true of a potential vaccine.&nbsp;
