Widespread rains lashed parts of Tamil Nadu on Thursday, prompting authorities to declare a holiday for schools in Chennai and many other districts.
Overnight rains lashed Chennai and the neighbouring Tiruvallur, Chengelpet and Kancheepuram, besides Villupuram and some areas in the Cauvery delta region.
Following sharp showers, authorities declared a day&rsquo;s holiday for schools in districts, including Chennai, Tiruvallur, Chengelpet, Kancheepuram, Villupuram, Ramanathapuram, Thanjavur, Mayiladuthurai and Cuddalore.
The regional weather office has forecast more spells of rain in Chennai, Tiruvallur, Chengelpet and Kancheepuram, Villupuram, Kallakurichi, Tiruvarur, Thanjavur districts in the state, besides the neighbouring union territory Puducherry.&nbsp;

A 33-year-old mother of an infant, dramatically rescued recently from the sunshade of an apartment in Chennai, allegedly died by suicide as she was "deeply disturbed" following criticism over her alleged negligence.
According to Police, the woman resorted to the extreme step at her parent&rsquo;s house in Karamadai.
A case was registered under section 174 of the Code of Criminal Procedure.
&ldquo;She has been deeply disturbed after her girl child accidentally slipped from her hands and fell onto the sunshade of the apartment where she was living with her husband in Thirumullaivoyal, Chennai,&rdquo; a senior police officer said on Tuesday.
The woman was found lying unconscious at her parents&rsquo; house on May 18 and was immediately rushed to a hospital by her parents but was declared brought dead at the hospital.
Recently, a video of the eight-month-old child dramatically being rescued by the apartment residents holding a bedspread went viral on social media.
While a group waited below the sunshade of the first floor hoping to catch the girl unharmed, two men climbed onto the balcony and one of them grabbed the girl by her dress and brought her down safely, much to the relief of everyone The woman reportedly faced criticism from certain quarters on social media for her alleged negligence. Many praised the residents for rescuing the child.
Following the incident on April 28, she came to her parents&rsquo; house here, police added.&nbsp;

India Today reported that Satish allegedly confessed to having acted as per the instructions of the team of Tirunelveli BJP MP candidate Nainar Nagenthiran.&nbsp;
Investigation into the matter is currently underway.&nbsp;

The incident, however, coerced parents to rush to schools to pick up their children.
Claiming that efforts were on to trace the culprit responsible for issuing the email threat to atleast four schools in the city, police said Bomb Detection and Disposal Squads (BDDS) had been sent to the schools to check for sabotage.&nbsp;

The night of the World Cup final match turned horrific for women who went to a pub on Turn Bulls Road in Chennai. On that night, the pub broke the mandated curfew as they remained open till past midnight. Soon after this, the police arrived and forced them to shut the place. Tamil news channels were also quick enough to reach there and they started critiquing the attire and conduct of the women who were patrons at the pub.
Reports from the Saidapet police, responsible for the pub&rsquo;s jurisdiction, confirmed the pub&rsquo;s prolonged operation past 11:30 pm. Upon receiving a complaint at midnight, law enforcement arrived, and after a delayed response from the pub, they took necessary action and filed a report at the J1 Saidapet police station.&nbsp;
However, the presence of various news channels, including Sun TV, Jaya TV, and Thanthi TV at the scene during the police inspection raised questions about their focus and subsequent coverage. The footage that was aired on television showed that the reporters were chasing women and taking their pictures.&nbsp;
The manner of reporting by these channels, rife with derogatory remarks and insinuations regarding women&rsquo;s behaviour, has triggered widespread outrage across social media platforms. Many individuals criticized the media's approach, highlighting the unfair targeting of the women present at the pub and expressing discomfort at the misogynistic narrative constructed by these news outlets.
Thanthi TV, in particular, faced significant backlash for their coverage, which initially blamed the women for the alleged "all-night alcohol party" and subsequent police intervention. Even after editing their social media post, the channel continued to perpetuate a narrative that shifted blame onto the women, using derogatory language and persistently focusing their cameras on the women's faces and bodies, disregarding their expressed discomfort and attempts to maintain privacy.
Several social media users called this incident out and said these journalists have no morals and this is the worst kind of journalism.&nbsp;

The child&rsquo;s body, which is now due for an autopsy, was recovered from the river after rescue officers intervened on October 12.&nbsp;
Police identified the man as Santosh Kumar, who has now been booked.&nbsp;
Authorities informed that Kumar, a native of Kodambakkam, is supposedly a habitual drinker, as per Indian Express. He has now been charged under Section 318 (concealment of birth by secret disposal of dead boy) of the Indian Penal Code.

As per ANI, the man had Rs 3 thousand in his account and he had transferred Rs 2000 to one of his friends, on Saturday morning after which he received the message about the deposit.

In much to his shock and surprise, a pharmacy staff from Chennai received a message that Rs 753 crore had been deposited in his Kotak Mahindra Bank account, the official said on Sunday.
The shock, however, was short-lived as the Kotak Mahindra Bank branch in Teynampet, where he has an account, froze it, saying the erroneous deposit was due to a technical glitch.
The pharmacy worker named Mohammad Idris (30) who has come from Tirunelveli district to Chennai for work, has been staying in the Teynampet area for the last 10 years and has been working in a pharmacy.
On Saturday morning, Idris received a message stating that Rs 753.48 crore was credited to his bank account and he had immediately contacted the bank and enquired about it.
Without responding properly to the customer, the bank officials received his account details and froze his account within minutes. Idris had Rs 3 thousand in his account and he had transferred Rs 2000 to one of his friends, on Saturday morning after which he received the message about the deposit.
This is the third incident in the last month in Tamil Nadu with several hundreds of crores being deposited into a commoner's bank account.

A pedestrian was killed in a horrific road accident in Chennai. Surveillance footage shows a speeding car ramming into the man and knocking him in the air. The man reportedly died on the spot.
The car came to a halt after crashing into other parked cars. Bystanders were seen running towards the crash in an attempt to aid the injured.
The driver, who was identified as Jayakumar, has now been arrested by law enforcement officials, as per India Today. The man who died was identified as Palani.
While Chennai police officials continue to investigate the fatal road accident, a case has been registered against the driver.
