West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on November 19 inaugurated Chhath Puja in Kolkata and announced a two-day holiday for government employees.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Sunday said the people of the state have a tradition of celebrating festivals of different religions together.
Inaugurating a Chhath Puja at Takta Ghat in Kolkata, she said that her government has announced a two-day holiday for its employees on the occasion of the festival, unlike the Centre that grants holiday for just a day.
Bengal celebrates Durga Puja, Kali Puja, Bakri-Eid and Muharram in the same manner, the chief minister said.
"We in Bengal have a tradition to celebrate (festivals) together. We eat together, chat together and this cannot be found anywhere else. We must respect all religions. Chhath is also our festival. Our government has declared holidays for two days, but Delhi (central government) does not," she said.
Banerjee also advised the people to celebrate the festival at the ghats with caution to avoid any untoward incident.
The chief minister also virtually inaugurated Chhath Pujas at a number of ghats in Kolkata, Howrah and Hooghly districts.

On the first day of three-day&nbsp;Chhath&nbsp;pooja&nbsp;in national capital Delhi, several devotees took a dip in Yamuna as toxic foam covered the surface of the water body.&nbsp;&nbsp;Numerous devotees completed&nbsp;the rituals&nbsp;for&nbsp;first&nbsp;day in the river water which currently has increased ammonia levels.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;This has also hit the city&rsquo;s water supply as the&nbsp;Yamuna river&nbsp;is way too contaminated for consumption.&nbsp;Meanwhile, as the last-minute preparations for the festival the ghats of the national capital are being cleaned.&nbsp;&nbsp;DJB vice-chairman Raghav Chadha earlier said water production by the treatment plants was hit due to heavy sewage and industrial discharge from Haryana.&nbsp;Chhath&nbsp;Puja is a festival dedicated to the Sun God and is mainly observed by the people from Bihar, Jharkhand and bordering areas in Uttar Pradesh.

Celebrations for Chhath Puja kick-started on the 18th of November with much enthusiasm.
The 4-day long festival, mainly celebrated by people in Jharkhand, eastern Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. On day 1, which is also called Nahai Khai, devotees cook sattvik food which is served as Bhog to the diety.
Authorities have made preparations on the ghats for devotees to offer their prayers to the Lord Sun on the 20th and 21st of November. A number of steps have been taken to ensure that Covid-19 safety protocols are followed.

The health minister urged people to avoid large gatherings on the festivals and to celebrate at homes with their families. The minister reminded the people that "no religion tells you to celebrate by putting others' lives at risk" and that "no Gods need big pandals or congregations". "If you know there is fire outside and you still go out in the fire in the name of religion -- what's the point of such festivals," the minister said in a strong message.
