Shaunak Sen&rsquo;s &lsquo;All That Breathes&rsquo; bagged a nomination in the Best Documentary category, and Kartiki Gonsalves&rsquo; &lsquo;The Elephant Whisperers&rsquo; earned a nomination in the Best Documentary Short Film category.
No Indian movie has ever won an Oscar, but a few of our films have almost made it to the top by being nominated.
Here are the Indian movies that have been nominated for the Oscars.
Mother India (1957)
The Mehboob Khan-directorial, starring Nargis, Sunil Dutt, Raaj Kumar and Rajendra Kumar, was a massive box office hit. The film revolved around a brave, poverty-stricken woman, who struggles to raise her sons. In the absence of her husband, she works day and night to fetch daily bread, and refuses to sacrifice her integrity.
The film was widely appreciated for focusing on women empowerment.&nbsp;
&lsquo;Mother India&rsquo; was the first Indian film to be nominated for the <a href="https://www.editorji.com/entertainment-news/bollywood/chello-show-for-oscars-ffi-faces-backlash-says-it-is-not-sure-if-it-s-an-indian-film-1664089890880">Oscars</a> for Best International Feature Film.
Salaam Bombay! (1988)
This was the second Indian film to be nominated for the Academy Award for <a href="https://www.editorji.com/entertainment-news/hollywood/johnny-depp-and-amber-heard-s-highly-publicised-defamation-trial-to-be-adapted-into-a-feature-film-1663323377900">Best International Feature film</a>. Directed by Mira Nair, the film narrates the story of a 12-year-old boy who earns a living away from his family, in the slums of Mumbai, and faces various challenges that life throws at him. The film starred Shafiq Syed, Raghuvir Yadav, Anita Kanwar, Nana Patekar, Hansa Vithal, and Chanda Sharma.&nbsp;
Lagaan (2001)
The Ashutosh Gowariker directorial, which starred <a href="https://www.editorji.com/entertainment-news/bollywood/from-karan-johar-to-aamir-khan-bollywood-celebrities-who-have-quit-twitter-1665541666220">Aamir Khan</a> and Gracy Singh, tells the story of oppressed farmers who have a draconian tax imposed upon them by the Britishers. Bhuvan, a farmer, is shown accepting the challenge of an arrogant British commander to beat his team in a cricket match, which will enable his village to not pay taxes for the next three years.
Writing with Fire (2021 Documentary Film)
Directed by Sushmit Ghosh and Rintu Thomas, this documentary narrates the story of a fearless group of journalists running the Dalit women-led newspaper. The group aims to help the people of the country and redefine what it means to be powerful.

&lsquo;Chhello Show&rsquo; director Pan Nalin congratulated Indian Oscar nominees and asked his &lsquo;Last Film Show&rsquo; family to move on.

Pan Nalin&rsquo;s &lsquo;Chhello Show&rsquo;, which was India&rsquo;s official contender at the 95th Academy Awards in the International Feature Film category, failed to make it to the final list of nominees. Now, the director has shared a note on social media congratulating the Indian Oscar nominees.
Nalin wrote, &lsquo;Congratulations to the trio of Indian nominees #AllThatBreathes #TheElephantWhisperers and #NaatuNaatu song.&rsquo;
&lsquo;RRR&rsquo;s song <a href="https://www.editorji.com/entertainment-news/oscars-2023-naatu-naatu-nominated-for-best-original-song-1674567963139">&lsquo;Naatu Naatu&rsquo;</a> scored a nomination in the Best Original Song category, while Indian documentary films &lsquo;All That Breathes&rsquo; and &lsquo;The Elephant Whisperers&rsquo; earned nomination in the Best Documentary Feature Film and the Best Documentary Short category.

Weeks ahead of the Oscars 2023, the director has expressed his disappointment that his massively successful film was not chosen as India&rsquo;s official entry in the Best International Feature Film category at the 95th Academy Awards.

&lsquo;RRR&rsquo;, starring Ram Charan and Jr NTR, recently bagged two Critics Choice awards &ndash; in the Best Foreign Language Film category and also the Best Song for &lsquo;Naatu Naatu&rsquo;.
&lsquo;Naatu Naatu&rsquo; was also declared the Best Song (Motion Picture) at the 80th Golden Globes.

The country is celebrating &lsquo;Chhello Show&rsquo;s success after it made it to the shortlist at the Oscars in the Best International Feature category. In a recent interview, director Pan Nalin opened up about the trolling the team had to face and all the hatred they received when their film was announced as India&rsquo;s official entry for Oscars.
He spoke about the moment when he learnt about his film&rsquo;s selection and mentioned that the proud moment soon turned &lsquo;sad&rsquo; as they faced &lsquo;baseless allegations, and trolling.&rsquo;
He told Mid-Day that the worst was the cyber attack prior to their film&rsquo;s release. Nalin said that his &lsquo;team was threatened with warnings, &lsquo;Oscars mein se film nikaal, nahi toh achcha nahin hoga&rsquo; (Get out of the running or you will face consequences). Instead of celebrating and campaigning in the US, we were busy fighting this [vitriol] for three to four weeks&rsquo;.
When SS Rajamouli&rsquo;s magnum opus &lsquo;RRR&rsquo; was snubbed by the Film Federation of India to represent India at the Oscars, social media debate started suggesting that Ram Charan and Jr NTR starrer had a brighter chance of making it to the shortlist, in comparison to the Gujarati film.
&lsquo;Chhello Show&rsquo; had a token theatrical release followed by an OTT release after the Oscar announcement.
Pan Nalin said when the Indian audience, film critics and industry folks finally watched the movie, they could not stop themselves from falling in love with it and in the end, the power of cinema won.

Indian movies &lsquo;RRR&rsquo; and India's Gujarati film &lsquo;The Last Film Show&rsquo; (Chhello Show) have made it to the shortlists for Oscars 2023. SS Rajamouli&rsquo;s magnum opus, starring Ram Charan and Jr. NTR, made to the shortlist for its song 'Naatu Naatu', while &lsquo;The Last Film Show&rsquo; was shortlisted in the Best International Feature Film category.
15 songs have been shortlisted from among 81 tunes in the best song category. Other songs include 'Nothing Is Lost' from 'Avatar: The way Of Water', 'Lift Me Up' from 'Blank Panther: Wakanda Forever', 'Hold My Hand' from 'Top Gun: Maverick' among others.
The foreign film category shortlist includes 15 movies - Alejandro Gonz&aacute;lez I&ntilde;&aacute;rritu&rsquo;s &lsquo;Bardo, False Chronicle of a Handful of Truths&rsquo; along with &lsquo;Holy Spider&rsquo; (Denmark), &lsquo;All Quiet on the Western Front&rsquo; (Germany), &lsquo;Saint Omer&rsquo; (France), &lsquo;Corsage&rsquo; (Austria), &lsquo;EO&rsquo; (Poland), &lsquo;Return to Seoul&rsquo; (Cambodia), &lsquo;Decision to Leave&rsquo; (South Korea), &lsquo;Close&rsquo; (Belgium) and &lsquo;Argentina, 1985&rsquo; (Argentina).

Pan Nalin&rsquo;s &lsquo;Chhello Show&rsquo;, India&rsquo;s official entry to the 95th Academy Awards, will be streaming on OTT platform Netflix in India from November 25. Titled &lsquo;Last Film Show&rsquo; in English, the Gujarati movie was released in Indian theatres on October 14.
The semi-biographical coming-of-age drama is based on a nine-year-old cinema lover Samay. Sharing the teaser on Twitter, Netflix India wrote, &lsquo;An extraordinary cinematic experience, Last Film Show, India's Official Selection for Best International Feature Film at the 95th Oscars is streaming from Nov 25 in Hindi &amp; Gujarati on Netflix!&rsquo;
According to Indian Express, in a statement, Nalin said he is happy to collaborate with Netflix as the film will reach a wider audience.
&lsquo;Last Film Show is a celebration of films, food, friends, and family and now audiences across India can do exactly that from the comfort of their homes while watching it. As a filmmaker, I dream that the movie reaches the maximum number of people, and now, thanks to Netflix, Last Film Show is just a click away,&rdquo; the filmmaker said.
Producer Siddharth Roy Kapur of Roy Kapur Films said the team is elated that &lsquo;Chhello Show&rsquo; will be made available Netflix India.
&lsquo;we are sure that the magic and beauty of Nalin&rsquo;s cinematic creation will enrapture Netflix audiences in India, just as it has with theatrical audiences in India and around the world,&rsquo; Kapur said.
&lsquo;Chhello Show&rsquo; has been screened at prestigious film festivals across the world like Tribeca, Buenos Aires International Festival of Independent Cinema amongst others. It also won the best picture at the Asian World Film Festival in Los Angeles.
The film will have a special screening at the ongoing International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in Goa.

The 53rd edition of the International Film Festival of India is all set to take place from November 20 to 28 at Panaji in Goa. Three films of Dadasaheb Phalke awardee Asha Parekh will be screened as a retrospective at the upcoming film gala. Spanish filmmaker Carlos Saura will also be felicitated with the lifetime achievement honour at the event.&nbsp;
 National Film Development Corporation of India managing director Ravinder Bhakar said that Asha Parekh suggested three of her favourite movies - &lsquo;Teesri Manzil&rsquo;, &lsquo;Do Badan&rsquo; and 'Kati Patang&rsquo;. He is also the director of the National Film Archive of India (NFAI).&nbsp;
 Spanish director Carlos Suara will be honoured with the Satyajit Ray Lifetime Achievement Award at the IFFI. Eight of his films, including La Caza del Conejo and Ana Y Los Lobos, will be screened at the event.&nbsp; Five Manipuri films, including Ishanou (The Chosen One) and Ratan Thiyam &ndash; the Man of the Theatre, will also be showcased to mark 50 years of Manipur in cinema.&nbsp;
 Kannada film &lsquo;Hadinelentu&rsquo;, directed by Prithvi Konanur, will open the feature section of the Indian Panorama, the flagship component of the IFFI. &lsquo;The Show Must Go On&rsquo; by Divya Cowasji will kickstart the non-feature film section. Pan Nalin&rsquo;s Gujarati film &lsquo;Chhello Show&rsquo; (The Last Film Show), India&rsquo;s official entry to the Oscars in the best international film category, and Madhur Bhandarkar&rsquo;s India Lockdown will also have special screenings at the festival.&nbsp;
 Other popular films like &lsquo;Drishyam 2&rsquo;, &lsquo;Goldfish&rsquo;, &lsquo;Bhediya&rsquo; will be premiered.&nbsp;
 According to Information and Broadcasting Secretary Apurva Chandra, the 53rd edition of the festival is important as it is the first chapter to be organised in-person after the shadow of the COVID-19 pandemic.&nbsp;

The news of ‘Chhello Show’ child actor Rahul Koli has left the makers of the film heartbroken and now, they are planning to honour his memory by setting up a trust for his family.

Rahul Koli, one of the child actors of &lsquo;Chhello Show&rsquo;, which is India&rsquo;s official entry for Oscars 2023, died of leukaemia on October 2. His father Ramu Koli informed news agency ANI that Rahul had been undergoing treatment at a hospital in Ahmedabad. He also mentioned that the makers of the film helped them financially through the difficult times.
Now, the makers of &lsquo;Chhello Show&rsquo; are reportedly planning to honour Rahul Koli&rsquo;s memory by setting up a trust for his family. &lsquo;Through the fund, his family will get a monthly sum, and it will work towards helping other kids in the treatment for blood cancer and bone marrow transplant,&rsquo; a source told Hindustan Times.
&lsquo;Chhello Show&rsquo; actor Dipen Raval told Hindustan Times, &lsquo;There are no words to express the grief that the whole team is feeling right now. We were attached to each other as a family. I had several scenes with him where he was running, and trust me, there were no symptoms of blood cancer. Agar kuch hota toh pata chalta. We got to know about it some months back, and were disturbed. Even his family was going through a tough times&rsquo;
He added, 'Aaj humari ek aankh mein khushi ke aansu hain ke Oscar buzz hai, and doosri aankh mein Rahul ko khone ke gum ke aansu hain. The film is a tribute to him'.
&lsquo;Chhello Show&rsquo;, directed by Pan Nalin, will release in theatres on October 14.

I knew other fellow filmmakers from other countries where they were being celebrated, and prepared to go for Oscars, and meanwhile, we were dealing with happy news and backlash,’ he said.
'It was the sad part about it all. We live in an information age, everything is at fingertips, before such accusations and allegations, one should watch the movie. The film was screened at Robert De Niro’s Tribeca Festival, and has won multiple awards internationally… If there was even a shade of copy, do you think any of these people would touch the movie? No way. It’s my personal story showing how I fell in love with cinema while growing up. I guess if any filmmaker decides to make a film about their love for cinema, it might look like Cinema Paradiso on the surface, but there will be many other things as well. I just want to say, please watch the film, and see why so many people are buying it,’ he added.
The Academy Awards are scheduled to be held in March next year.

Well, what has left everyone wondering is whether commercial movies, that appeals to everyone, are not good enough for Oscars?
The Ram Charan-Jr. NTR starrer won the hearts of not only the Indian audience, but also received a positive response across borders. Host of Hollywood celebrities such as Russo Brothers and Danny DeVito praised the epic fantasy. The film grossed a whopping Rs 1,000 crore at the worldwide box office.
‘RRR’ was re-released in theatres across United States in June and a Hindi-language version of the film streamed on Netflix, and ranked in the top 10 most watched titles in America for nine consecutive weeks.
Three months on, ‘RRR’ is pulling the audience to the theatres in the US, and it’s available on various streaming platforms.
In an interview with Hindustan Times, FFI committee head TS Nagabharana talked about ‘RRR’s Oscar snub and said the story matters not the collection or popularity. According to him, ‘Chhello Show’ is a ‘narrative of a regular Indian reality, and shows it in a broader sense, while tugging the emotional chords’. 
J Hurtado, a film critic, who’s part of team that’s running ‘RRR’s theatre campaign in the US, begs to differ from FFI’s opinion. He said that when it comes to any major awards in the US, popularity plays a key role. Citing examples of ‘Black Panther’ and ‘Mad Max: Fury Road’, he stated that ‘road for popular films to winning Academy Awards is not unknown’. 
He said that India’s selection for Oscars has a ‘very dicey history’. He opined that it’s better to send out a film that has the best chance of getting a nomination and winning the award. He further added that ‘the whole point of that Best International Feature Film is to highlight a country’s best output.’
‘It has lit a fire under some people to not let it (RRR) be forgotten. This ground swell of support has happened. People are talking about. The team didn’t go out to these high-profile names and pushed the film on them,’ said Hurtado.
Hurtado explained that the SS Rajamouli’s film is very focused on the story it’s telling and the characters are very driven. 
‘The action is over the top, but it never seems extraneous to the plot. It’s very well designed in a way that the American audience appreciates because we don’t get that very often,’ he said.
He revealed that their focus right now is to get as many people as possible to watch the film in the big screen.
Variance Films president Dylan Marchetti, who is backing ‘RRR’s Oscar campaign, believes that this film benefits from the vibe an audience gives it.
The fans of ‘RRR’ argue that the film could have been a strong contender for the Oscars owing to its ability to capture the imagination of audience worldwide. 
Several members of the Hollywood fraternity and film critics have also strongly reacted to the FFI’s decision. 
Filmmaker Adam McKay, the director of Leonardo DiCaprio’s ‘Don’t Look Up’, called ‘RRR’s Oscar snub a ‘travesty’ and pledged to promote the film further. 
SS Rajamouli’s period action drama will be submitted to the 95th Academy Awards in all popular categories, including Best Pictures and Best Original Score.

Director-actor Gautham Menon doesn't think that SS Rajamouli's ‘RRR’ is 'Oscar material'. During an interview with India Today, he was asked about his opinion on Ram Charan-Jr NTR starrer not being selected as India's official entry for the 95th Academy Awards.
Last week, Gujarati film ‘Chhello Show’ was announced as India’s official entry at the Oscars in the best international feature film category by the Film Federation of India (FFI). The Pan Nalin directorial was unanimously chosen over films such as ‘RRR’, ‘Brahmastra’, ‘The Kashmir Files’ and ‘Rocketry’.
Talking about ‘RRR’ and ‘Chhello Show’, Gautham said that he’s happy if one of our films gets the Oscars, but he doesn’t know if ‘RRR’ is ‘Oscar material’. He added that the director doesn’t make a film thinking about the awards, and it’s only after its release that people love the performance and chat about awards begins.
‘There's another film that has been selected so I haven't seen that film. I would love to see it. There's a lot of talk about that film also saying, 'This is the film that should make it to the Oscars'. Honestly, I'm not so sure. For me, if one of our films gets the Oscars, very happy about it but then somewhere that drive to be there is not there as yet in that sense. I'm not being sour grapes or anything like that. But to answer your question, I don’t know if RRR is also Oscar material, in that sense, honestly,’ Gautham told India Today.
‘When we make the film, we really don't think about awards. It is only when the film releases and people love the performance, that there is this chat about awards. A film is never made for an award-winning performance, or, to get the best director award, it's never made like that. We put what the film deserves into it. Right? That's all it is,’ he added
After the snub from Film Federation of India, Variance Films, ‘RRR's US distributor, requested the Academy to consider the film 'in all categories', including best picture, director, original screenplay, lead actor, supporting actor, and supporting actress among others.
‘RRR’ narrates the story of real-life revolutionaries Komaram Bheem and Alluri Sitaraman. The film is set in the 1920s when India was under the British rule.

Now, TP Aggarwal, the president of Film Federation of India (FFI), has spoken in favour of jury&rsquo;s decision to select 'Chhello Show' as India's official entry to the Oscars instead of other audience favorites like 'RRR' and 'The Kashmir Files'.
However, he could not say much on the FWIC claims that 'Chhello Show' is not an Indian film and it has primarily been produced by foreign studios.&nbsp;
When asked how can the movie be Indian if it is produced by an International Studio, TP Aggarwal told Indian Express, &lsquo;I cannot say anything about that, I am not sure about it.&rsquo;&nbsp;
The FFI president responded to the claims saying it is a copy of 'Cinema Paradiso'. He told, &lsquo;No, I had asked the jury members, they&rsquo;ve seen the picture so many times and they said no (it is not a copy). Not a single scene is similar in the film. It can be inspired by that, but it is not a copy.&rsquo; &nbsp;
'Chello Show' is about a 9-year-old Indian boy in Gujarat who falls in love with cinema. The film is said to be semi-autobiographical as it is based in Gujarat&rsquo;s Saurashtra and Pan Nalin was also born and brought up there.

Now, TP Aggarwal, the president of Film Federation of India (FFI), has spoken in favour of jury&rsquo;s decision to select 'Chhello Show' as India's official entry to the Oscars instead of other audience favorites like 'RRR' and 'The Kashmir Files'.
However, he could not say much on the FWIC claims that 'Chhello Show' is not an Indian film and it has primarily been produced by foreign studios.&nbsp;
When asked how can the movie be Indian if it is produced by an International Studio, TP Aggarwal told Indian Express, &lsquo;I cannot say anything about that, I am not sure about it.&rsquo;&nbsp;
The FFI president responded to the claims saying it is a copy of 'Cinema Paradiso'. He told, &lsquo;No, I had asked the jury members, they&rsquo;ve seen the picture so many times and they said no (it is not a copy). Not a single scene is similar in the film. It can be inspired by that, but it is not a copy.&rsquo; &nbsp;
'Chello Show' is about a 9-year-old Indian boy in Gujarat who falls in love with cinema. The film is said to be semi-autobiographical as it is based in Gujarat&rsquo;s Saurashtra and Pan Nalin was also born and brought up there.

Gujarati film "Chhello Show", a coming-of-age drama about a young boy's love affair with cinema in a village in Saurashtra, is India's official entry for the 95th Academy Awards, the Film Federation of India (FFI) announced on Tuesday.
Titled "Last Film Show" in English, the Pan Nalin-directorial will release in theatres countrywide on October 14.
According to FFI president TP Aggarwal, "Chhello Show" was unanimously chosen over films such as SS Rajamouli's "RRR", Ranbir Kapoor-led "Brahmastra: Part One Shiva", Vivek Agnihotri's "The Kashmir Files" and R Madhavan's directorial debut "Rocketry".
"The 17 member jury unanimously chose 'Chhello Show'. There were a total of 13 films of different languages including six in Hindi -- 'Brahmastra', 'The Kashmir Files', 'Anek', 'Jhund", "Badhaai Do' and 'Rocketry' -- and one each in Tamil ('Iravin Nizhal'), Telugu ('RRR'), Bengali ('Aparajito') and Gujarati ('Chhello Show') as well as few others," Aggarwal told PTI.
The film, which will represent the country in the best international feature film category at the Oscars, is produced by Siddharth Roy Kapur's banner Roy Kapur Films, Jugaad Motion Pictures, Monsoon Films, Chhello Show LLP and Marc Duale.
The story is inspired by Nalin's own memories of falling in love with movies as a child in rural Gujarat.
Set in a remote rural village of Saurashtra, the film follows the story of a nine-year-old boy who begins a lifelong love affair with cinema when he bribes his way into a rundown movie palace and spends a summer watching movies from the projection booth.
Nalin, best known for directing critically-acclaimed films "Samsara", "Valley of Flowers" and "Angry Indian Goddesses", expressed his gratitude to the FFI and the selection jury.
"I could have never imagined such a day would come and bring light and celebration of light. 'Chhello Show' has been enjoying love from around the world but there was an ache in my heart that how do I make India discover it? Now I can breathe again and believe in cinema that entertains, inspires and enlightens! Thank you FFI, Thank you Jury," the director said in a statement.
"Chhello Show", which features Bhavin Rabari, Vikas Bata, Richa Meena, Bhavesh Shrimali, Dipen Raval and Rahul Koli, had its world premiere as the opening film at the Tribeca Film Festival in June last year.
It won multiple awards during its festival run, including the Golden Spike at the 66th Valladolid Film Festival in Spain where it also enjoyed commercial success during its theatrical run.
Roy Kapur said the team is thrilled and honoured with the film's selection for the Oscars 2023.
"There could not be a more apt time for a film like this one, that celebrates the magic and wonder of cinema and the theatrical experience. When cinema-going around the world has been disrupted by a pandemic, it reminds audiences anew of the first time they fell in love with the experience of watching a movie in a darkened cinema hall," the producer said.
Last year, Tamil drama "Koozhangal" ("Pebbles"), directed by filmmaker Vinothraj PS, was India's official entry at the Oscars but didn't make the shortlist.
The last Indian film that made it to the final five was the Aamir Khan-led "Lagaan" in 2001.
"Mother India" (1958) and "Salaam Bombay" (1989) are the other two Indian movies to have made it to the top five.
The 95th Academy Awards are scheduled to take place on March 12, 2023 in Los Angeles.
