Senior Congress leader P Chidambaram hit back at foreign minister Jaishankar over the Katchatheevu island row, accusing the BJP leader of doing a "somersault" on the issue.
The former finance minister also said that Jaishankar's journey from being a "suave liberal foreign service officer" to a "mouthpiece of the RSS-BJP" will be "recorded in the annals of acrobatic sports".
Chidambaram told ANI that this agreement was arrived at in 1974 and 1976 after long negotiations. "PM Modi is referring to a recent RTI reply, he should refer to the RTI reply of January 27, 2015, when I believe EAM S Jaishankar was foreign secretary. That reply clearly says that after negotiations, the island lay on the Srilankan side of the international border."
Later on X, the former minister said, "It is true that Fishermen were detained in the last 50 years. Likewise, India has detained many SL fishermen Every government has negotiated with Sri Lanka and freed our fishermen. This has happened when Jaishankar was a foreign service officer and when he was Foreign Secretary and when he is Foreign Minister."

Senior Congress leader P Chidambaram on Sunday took a swipe at the government over rising airfares, saying that in free markets, when demand increases, supply will increase, but in India's free market, when demand increases, prices will increase.
The Congress has been attacking the government, demanding concrete action over rising airfares.
In a tweet, Chidambaram said, "Delhi-Chennai Business Class air tickets on Vistara and Air India have been set at a 'reasonable' price of Rs 6300 and Rs 5700 respectively. Oops, sorry, they are set at a 'very reasonable' Rs 63,000 and Rs 57,000 respectively." "In free markets, when demand increases, supply will increase. In India's free market, when demand increases, prices will increase," he said.
Airlines will expand their routes, curtail flights on old routes and jack up prices, the former finance minister said.
"India will be the Vishwaguru to the world on monopolistic capitalism," he said.
In another tweet after many criticised him for quoting business class fares, Chidambaram said, "I have the prices for Economy class too. On the SAME day and on the SAME route, the prices are 28,000 (AI) and 12,000 (VISTARA)." "As usual, the bhakts have missed the central issue. The issue is not who travels in what class. The issue is, why are fares rising practically every week? And why is AI charging Rs 28,000 and Vistara charging 12,000 on the same day and on the same route?" This is what a monopoly or a duopoly does, he said.
"In a free market, there must be competition. The more intense the competition, the better it will be," Chidambaram said.

Senior Congress leader P Chidambaram on Monday said the introduction of Rs 2,000 note and its subsequent withdrawal have cast doubt on the integrity and stability of the Indian currency.
Addressing a press conference here, the former Union finance minister said the key economic indicators are pointing downward and there is low confidence that the economy will reach the high growth path.
He also said the situation in Manipur, where recent ethnic clashes have claimed more than 75 lives, was alarming and questioned the continued silence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Governance and policies in a secular, democratic country must give rise to a tide that will lift all boats. In that view, the NDA government has totally failed in the last nine years, he said.
What is worse is that the government does not even make an effort to correct its mistakes and govern for all the people, he said.
The Reserve Bank of India recently announced withdrawal of Rs 2000 notes from circulation and asked people to deposit it in banks or get it exchanged by September 30.
"The thoughtless - some would even say foolish - introduction of the Rs 2,000 note (which the people shunned) and the mortifying spectacle of withdrawing the note have cast doubt on the integrity and stability of India's currency," Chidambaram said.
The first three quarters of 2022-23 recorded growth rates of 13.2, 6.3 and 4.4 per cent, a declining trend. The present situation is a far cry from the average of nine per cent growth rate that marked the boom years between 2004 and 2009, he said.
The Indian economy is growing modestly at a much-reduced pace facing serious issues of unemployment, inflation, widening inequalities and stumbling welfare programmes, he said.

Top Congress leaders detained on Monday during the party's protest in solidarity with Rahul Gandhi, who was grilled by the ED in a money-laundering probe linked to the National Herald newspaper, were released from various police stations after almost 11 hours.
Sources said many Congress MPs who were detained for violating CrPC Section 144 were released around 11.30 pm soon after Rahul Gandhi left the Enforcement Directorate office after over 10 hours of questioning.
The MPs who were detained for over 11 hours include Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, K C Venugopal, Randeep Surjewala and Harish Rawat.
Surjewala had earlier alleged that were kept under "illegal" detention in violation of the law under the Narendra Modi regime. A video showed Chowdhury and Venugopal asking the police to either arrest them or release them immediately.
"We are Members of Parliament. How can you detain us? Arrest us. We are ready to go to the court," Venugopal was heard telling the police in the video.
Chowdhury told the police, "You cannot illegally detain us like this. Either arrest us or release us now." Harish Rawat also put out a video saying they were not released from police detention and have to wait till Rahul Gandhi leaves the ED office. Soon after, the police opened the gates of the Tughlak Road police station, releasing around 10 MPs.
Congress whip in the Lok Sabha Manickam Tagore, in a tweet, said, "We were released at 11.45 pm from Mandir Marg Police Station. If Shah and gang think that they can silence the Congress then it's completely wrong. We will fight back. Our leader is Rahul Gandhi." The Delhi Police on Monday detained 459 Congress workers and senior leaders, including Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, K C Venugopal and Mallikarjun Kharge, for not following police directions for the maintenance of law and order in the national capital, officials said.
They also said that allegations of manhandling and injuries to protesting Congress leaders during police action will be diligently looked into.
Hundreds of Congress workers in Delhi took to the streets and several senior leaders were detained amid a massive show of strength by the party which had called for a Satyagrah march against the ED's questioning of Rahul Gandhi.
The opposition party alleged that some of its leaders were manhandled by the police. It lashed out at the government for "not allowing" peaceful protests.
Taking to Twitter, senior Congress leader P Chidambaran said, "When three big, burly policemen crash into you, you are lucky to get away with a suspected hairline crack! Doctors have said that if there is a hairline crack, it will heal by itself in about 10 days. I am fine and I will go about my work tomorrow."

The former finance minister accused the ED of not following the law, saying why the probe agency which reports to the home ministry was not filing cases against BJP&nbsp;leaders or the states in which the saffron party is ruling. "Obviously, they're not following the law &amp; in a democracy, we are entitled to protest... is there any BJP leader against whom the ED has registered a case in the last 4-5 years? Is there any BJP-ruled state where the ED has registered a case?," the Congress leader asked.&nbsp; Chidambaram, who along with party colleagues participated in a protest march as Rahul Gandhi appeared before the ED, said three big, burly policemen crashed into him and he was lucky to get away with a "suspected hairline crack". About the ED summons to Rahul Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi and the Congress' decision of a show of strength, Chidambaram said, "I speak as a Congress member and an advocate. The ED's summons to Rahul Gandhi under PMLA (Prevention of Money Laundering Act) is baseless." Pointing out that the offence of money laundering requires 'money' and "laundering of money", the former home minister said in the National Herald debt-to-equity conversion, something which lending banks do on a regular basis, there was no transaction of money.
Therefore, how can there be money laundering, he posed.

In a late-night relief, the Punjab and Haryana High Court stayed a fresh arrest warrant against BJP leader Tajinder Pal Singh Bagga whose dramatic arrest by the Punjab Police and subsequent release triggered an intense political slugfest between the AAP and the BJP on Saturday.
Justice Anoop Chitkara took up Bagga's petition in an urgent hearing at his residence just before midnight and directed that no coercive steps be taken against him till May 10, hours after a Mohali court issued the non-bailable arrest warrant, the BJP leader's counsel Chetan Mittal said.
In the political arena, the slugfest between the AAP and the BJP escalated into protests and name-calling.
Back home in the early hours of Saturday, Bagga, surrounded by family members and friends at his Janakpuri residence, tore into the Aam Aadmi Party and its chief Arvind Kejriwal over his arrest, accusing him of pursuing political vendetta through police in Punjab.
"No matter one or 100 FIRs are registered against me, I will keep raising issues of dishonouring of the Guru Granth Sahib and Kejriwal's insult to Kashmiri Pandits," he said.
"They (the AAP) are attacking me because I am raising my voice against the AAP and its chief Kejriwal," he said.
BJP leaders also protested outside the residence of the Delhi Chief Minister, calling him a "dictator".
The AAP accused the BJP and its governments of protecting its "goon" who incited riots in Punjab.
Bagga's arrest in the case filed by AAP leader Sunny Ahluwalia at Mohali on April 1 witnessed the Punjab Police pitted against their counterparts from Haryana and Delhi.
The Delhi Police has filed a case of kidnapping over his arrest. As Punjab Police was taking him to AAP-ruled state, they were stopped by their Haryana counterparts. Bagga was later brought to the national capital by the Delhi Police, taken to the DDU hospital as a Medico-Legal-Case (MLC) before being produced in front of a Dwarka court magistrate.
"The medical examination revealed injury marks on his body,” the Delhi Police said on Saturday. "Bagga expressed apprehension over his safety and security. We will do necessary security arrangements," a senior officer said.
Bagga claimed that while he was being taken to Punjab after his arrest, the police tried to persuade him not to raise issues pertaining to dishonouring of Guru Granth Sahib and 'The Kashmir Files' movie. "They told me why I was getting myself involved with matters of other state when I lived in Delhi." Delhi BJP chief Adesh Gupta alleged that with Bagga's arrest, it was clear that the Aam Aadmi Party's national convener had "misused" the Punjab Police for personal benefit.
"Kejriwal is a dictator. What was Bagga's crime? He just asked for Kejriwal's clarification on his remarks on '(The) Kashmir Files'. He was not allowed to wear a turban during the arrest," he said. "The BJP will not tolerate the insult to the turban." The National Commission for Minorities (NCM) also sought a report from Punjab chief secretary within seven days on allegations that Bagga was not allowed to wear a turban while being arrested by Punjab police.
Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia alleged the entire BJP and its governments are engaged in saving one of their "goons who spoke against the brotherhood in Punjab and incited riots".
"The BJP is a party of goons which makes even its government do the job of goons. Never even by mistake, these people talk about education, health, inflation and unemployment," he tweeted in Hindi.
But even as Bagga and the BJP launched tirades against the AAP, a court in Mohali issued a non-bailable arrest warrant against Bagga for allegedly promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion and criminal intimidation), among other charges.
The arrest warrant was issued by the court of Judicial Magistrate Ravtesh Inderjit Singh.
In its order, the court said, "Keeping in view the contents of the application and the fact that sufficient opportunities have already been granted to the accused to join the investigation and despite that accused has failed to join the investigation, it is necessary in the interest of justice, to issue non-bailable warrants of accused Tajinder Pal Singh Bagga for 23.05.2022, who is evading arrest, in order to facilitate the investigation." Soon after, Bagga moved the high court and secured relief.
Also, the Punjab government Saturday moved two applications before the Punjab and Haryana High Court, seeking the Centre and the Delhi Police chief be made parties to the arrest case, and that the May 6 CCTV footage of Janakpuri and Kurukshetra police stations be preserved.
The Punjab government has alleged that its police personnel were "detained" at Janakpuri and Kurukshetra police stations when they had gone to arrest Bagga.
After the hearing, the Delhi Police counsel alleged the Punjab Police did not follow laid down procedure while arresting Bagga, a claim rejected by the Pujab government counsel.
"The Punjab Police did not consult us or inform us before taking Mr Bagga into custody. Those who had gone there (to Bagga's home in Delhi) they were also not in uniform, they were in plainclothes," said Additional Solicitor General of India Satya Pal Jain, who represented the Delhi Police.
Punjab government counsel Poneet Bali told reporters outside the high court on Saturday that Bagga was served notices on five occasions, but he did not respond.
"The Punjab police has every right to arrest an accused," he said.
The hearing in the case was adjourned for May 10.
While referring to the kidnapping complaint, the counsel claimed the Delhi Police obtained a search warrant from a court without disclosing the fact that Bagga is an accused in a case and he has been arrested.
"So, whatever is the future course of action as far as Mr Bagga is concerned will definitely be taken." The ruling AAP's chief spokesperson for Punjab Malvinder Singh Kang claimed Bagga was a habitual offender. Her alleged Bagga faced more than 20 cases in Delhi, West Bengal and Chattisgarh.
"Such anti-social elements should get punishment as per the law of the land, but unfortunately the country's government is coming out in his support," he alleged.
"...This country will run according to law, Constitution, and not in an autocratic manner," Kang said.
The Congress also entered the debate with its leader P Chidambaram saying police serving their political masters will lead to the "ultimate breakdown" of federalism.

Senior Congress leader P Chidambaram on Saturday said Prime Minister Narendra Modi made the announcement to repeal the farm laws without holding a Cabinet meeting and alleged that it is only under the BJP that laws are made and unmade without prior Cabinet approval.
The Congress leader's attack came a day after Modi in an address to the nation announced the repeal of the three agri laws that had triggered a year of protests by farmers.
"Home Minister hailed the PM's announcement as showing 'remarkable statesmanship'. BJP President said that PM has 'immense care for farmers'. Defence Minister said that PM had taken the decision considering the 'welfare of the farmers'. Where were these worthy leaders and their wise advice in the last 15 months?" Chidambaram said on Twitter.
“Did you notice that the PM made the announcement without holding a Cabinet meeting,” the former Union minister asked.
"It is only under the BJP that laws are made and unmade without prior Cabinet approval," he went on to allege.
Hundreds of farmers had been protesting and were encamped at Delhi's borders since last November with a demand for repeal of the Farmers' Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Act, 2020, Farmers' (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement on Price Assurance and Farm Services Act, 2020 and the Essential Commodities (Amendment) Act, 2020, and forging of a new law that guarantees MSP for crops.
The Centre, which has held 11 rounds of formal dialogue with the farmers, had maintained that the new laws are pro-farmer, while protesters claimed the legislations would leave them at the mercy of corporates.

The UNHRC&nbsp;on Wednesday took a vote on resolution for &lsquo;Promoting reconciliation, accountability and human rights in Sri Lanka&rsquo;.
