An average 31 children died by suicide every day in India in 2020, according to government data. The experts have underlined that the Covid-19 pandemic may have accentuated the psychological trauma faced by children to a great extent.
According to the National Crime Records Bureau data, 11,396 children died by suicide in 2020, an 18 per cent rise from 9,613 such deaths in 2019 and 21 per cent rise from 9,413 in 2018.
'Family Problems' (4,006), 'Love Affairs' (1,337) and 'Illness' (1,327) were the main causes of suicide among children (below 18 years of age). Ideological causes or hero worshipping, unemployment, bankruptcy, impotency or infertility and drug abuse were other reasons behind suicide by some children.
Prabhat Kumar, Deputy Director &ndash; Child Protection, Save the Children, said Covid-19 and the resultant school closures and social isolation coupled with anxiety among elders have further aggravated the issue of mental health and brought it to the forefront.
"While we as a society are cognisant of tangibles such as education and physical health for building national human capital, emotional wellbeing or psycho-social support often takes a back seat. The successively increasing number of suicides among children reflects a systemic failure. It is a collective responsibility of parents, families, neighbourhoods, and government at large to provide a conducive ecosystem where children can look forward to realizing their potential and fulfilling their dreams for a bright future. Committing suicide, on the contrary, is an antithesis," Kumar told PTI.
"Stigma attached to mental health and an abysmally low number of per capita mental health professionals demand urgent attention. Covid-19, and the resultant school closures and social isolation coupled with anxiety among elders has further aggravated the issue and brought it to the forefront. Save the Children calls for a collective action to nurture an encouraging and supportive ecosystem for children and youth," he added.
Commenting on the topic, Priti Mahara, Director, Policy Research and Advocacy at CRY-Child Rights and You, said from the very beginning of the pandemic, it was one of the major concerns that it might impact children's mental health and psycho-social well-being, and the recent NCRB data actually underscores the fear that the pandemic may have accentuated the psychological trauma faced by the children to a great extent.
"As the NCRB data reveals, a total of 11,396 children (5,392 boys and 6,004 girls) have died by suicide in 2020, which accounts for 31 deaths per day or approximately 1 child committing suicide per hour," she told PTI.
"Children have gone through tremendous emotional stress and trauma due to home confinement and lack of interaction with friends, teachers or any other person in the position of trust due to prolonged closure of schools and limited social interactions," she said.
Many of them have been through hostile environment at home, many others have seen demise of their loved ones and have faced the impact of fear of contagion and deepening financial crisis at the family level, she said.
Many children have also experienced huge uncertainty related to completion of curriculum, exams and results.

The study used an online survey to collect responses from 376 families in the UK, with children between three and seven years old. Over half of these families reported that their child's connection to nature increased during the first COVID-19 lockdown. CMO Neeta Kulshresth has been transferred from Firozabad as senior consultant of Aligarh&rsquo;s Malkhan Singh District Hospital, an order issued said.Now, Dr Dinesh Kumar Premi will be the new CMO. He till now held the charge of the additional CMO in Hapur.
The order, however, did not mention the reason for the transfer.
Earlier on Tuesday, Firozabad BJP MLA Manish Asija had claimed that 44 people died of suspected dengue in the district since August 22-23.
All schools for Classes 1 to 8 were closed by the district administration till September 6 due to the suspected dengue outbreak.

All&nbsp;the studies confirmed&nbsp;that physical punishment&nbsp;is ineffective and harmful and has no benefits for children and their families. In fact, it may even lead to&nbsp;behavioural problems such as aggression and antisocial behaviour, finds the team.&nbsp;Moreover,&nbsp;these detrimental outcomes from physical punishment occurred irrespective of the child&rsquo;s sex, ethnicity, or the overall parenting styles of the caregivers.&nbsp;
The team also noted that even today, 63 per cent of children between the ages of two and four, approximately 250 million children globally, are regularly subjected to physical punishment by their caregivers.&nbsp;
As per UNICEF data,&nbsp;children living in 73 countries do not have legal protection from this form of violence while at school, including India where corporal punishment is only partially&nbsp;prohibited.&nbsp;

A paediatric sero-survey conducted before the anticipated third wave of the pandemic has revealed that 51.18% of children between 1 to 18 years in Mumbai have developed antibodies against coronavirus, the city civic body said on Monday.
A total of 2,176 blood samples were tested for this study conducted between April and June, it said.
The survey conducted by the civic-run BYL Nair Hospital and Kasturba Molecular Diagnostic Laboratory (KMDL) also revealed that the proportion of the pediatric population having antibodies has increased compared to the earlier sero-survey, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said in a release.
A sero-survey involves testing of blood serum of a group of people and the findings are used to monitor trends in prevalence.
As a possible third wave of COVID-19 is anticipated to affect children disproportionately, the BMC had directed to conduct the sero-survey of the pediatric population during the second wave itself. The BMC said this was the third sero -survey conducted since the beginning of the pandemic. This survey was conducted between April 1 to June 15 in which 2,176 blood samples were collected from pathology laboratories including 1,283 samples from Aapli Chikitsa Network and the Nair Hospital of BMC, and 893 from a network of two private laboratories across 24 municipal wards.
The key findings of this study suggest that more than 50 per cent of the children have already been exposed to SARS-COV-2.
"The overall sero-positivity is 51.18 per cent including 54.36 per cent from the public sector and 47.03 per cent from the private sector," the release said, adding that sero-positivity is the highest in the age group 10-14 years at 53.43 per cent.
The sero-positivity rate in children of 1 to 4 years is 51.04 per cent, while it is 47.33 per cent in the age group of 5 to 9 years, 53.43 per cent in 10 to 14 years, and 51.39 per cent in 15 to 18 years. The overall sero-positivity rate of 1 to 18 years is 51.18 per cent, it said.
"There is a notable increase in sero-positivity in the pediatric population to SARS-CoV-2 in this study as compared to the sero survey-3 conducted in March 2021, which showed a sero-positivity of 39.4% in the age group of ?18 years, which indicates that a significant proportion of children accessing the healthcare services were exposed to the virus during the second wave of the COVID-19," the release said.&nbsp;

As many as 577 children across the country were orphaned after their parents died to Covid-19, Women and Child Development Minister Smriti Irani said citing reports of states and union territories from April 1 till Tuesday. She also said that the government is committed to support and protect every vulnerable child who lost both parents to Covid.
