Beijing's biggest maritime drills in years involve about 60 warships and 30 coast guard vessels deployed from near the southern islands of Japan to the South China Sea, a senior national security official told AFP on the condition of anonymity.
China has also ramped up military aircraft activity closer to Taiwan, with 100 sorties detected over the past two days, figures from the island's defence ministry show.
There has been no public announcement by Beijing's army or Chinese state media about increased military activity in the East China Sea, Taiwan Strait, South China Sea or Western Pacific Ocean.
However, a recent Pacific tour by Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te that included two stops in US territory drew fury from Beijing, which claims the democratic island as part of China's territory.
The security official said on Wednesday that China's plans for the massive maritime operation began in October and were aimed at demonstrating that Beijing could choke off Taiwan and also to "draw a red line" ahead of the next US administration.
"China uses President Lai's overseas visit as a pretext, with Taiwan only serving as an excuse," the official said.
"The real objective appears to be asserting control within the first island chain and establishing strategic deterrence ahead of the US presidential transition," the official said, referring to the chain linking Okinawa, Taiwan and the Philippines.
Taiwan's foreign ministry said on Wednesday that China's increased military activity around the island, including its huge maritime drills and frequent aircraft deployments, was evidence that Beijing was a "troublemaker".
US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said the United States was monitoring China's "latest activity" and would ensure "nobody does anything to change the status quo in the (Taiwan) Strait".
"Again, our policy hasn't changed. We'll continue to do what we can to help Taiwan acquire the means to defend itself," Austin told reporters at a US base in Japan on Wednesday.

- Simulating attacks, blockade -
Chinese warships have simulated attacking foreign ships during the drills, while the coast guard has practised intercepting commercial vessels as well as disrupting and blockading sea routes, the official said.
China also held "joint operations with Russia" over several days in November, the official said.
Recent bad weather had "posed challenges for smaller vessels" involved in the drills, they said.
Taiwan lives under the constant threat of invasion by China, which has not ruled out using force to bring the island under its control.
China has ramped up the deployment of fighter jets and warships around the island in recent years to press its claim over self-ruled Taiwan.
It also opposes any international recognition of Taiwan and especially bristles at official contact between Taipei and Washington.
Lai spoke with Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson, drawing a barrage of criticism from China, in addition to his two recent stopovers on US soil.
Beijing's foreign ministry spokeswoman said on Tuesday that China would "resolutely defend" its sovereignty.

The security official said the sea drills were "significantly larger" than Beijing's maritime response to then-US House speaker Nancy Pelosi's visit to Taipei in 2022, which was China's largest-ever war games around Taiwan.
China has held four major military exercises in just over two years, including the drills in response to Pelosi's visit and two since Lai took office in May.
Beijing usually announces its military exercises but the official said one reason it may have decided to stay silent was to avoid overshadowing China's annual Central Economic Work Conference.
China's leadership will gather on Wednesday for a closed-door meeting to hammer out plans to boost the economy next year, reports said.
Taipei-based military analyst Shu Hsiao-huang told AFP that Beijing's drills had a "pronounced sense of real combat readiness and operational intent ".
"In the East China Sea, it seems China is preparing for large-scale aerial operations to confront US naval forces," said Shu, from the Institute for National Defense and Security Research.
"Meanwhile, the deployment of significant naval assets east of Taiwan suggests a strategy to blockade the island, cutting off its economic lifelines and essential resources."
The Taiwan defence ministry's daily tally of Chinese aircraft detected around the island was 53 on Wednesday and 47 on Tuesday.
Wednesday's figure was the highest number of aircraft detected in a single day since a record 153 were reported on October 15 after China staged large-scale military drills in response to Lai's National Day speech days earlier.

This unnamed undersea vessel is being touted as an advanced version of the Yuan-class submarine, which acts as the backbone of Chinese Navy operations.
There was no official confirmation, no fanfare. The People's Liberation Army Navy quietly launched this undersea vessel reportedly in April 2024.
Despite remaining shrouded in mystery, its existence was first reported in July this year by a former US Navy submariner and defence analyst Tom Shugart.
The analyst shared a satellite image of the unnamed vessel stationed at Wuchang Shipyard in central China's Wuhan city.
He believes that this unnamed vessel is a derivative of or superior to the Yuan-class non-nuclear submarines, and is capable of firing anti-ship missiles.
China has been producing an export variant of the Yuan-class at the same shipyard for Pakistan as Hangor class. The Hangor class is a direct rival of India&rsquo;s Kalavari class of diesel-electric attack submarines.
While the information is scarce, this new unnamed submarine is believed to be equipped with advanced technologies.
According to reports, the unnamed submarine appears to be 83 to 85 meters long, compared to the 77-meter-long Yuan class.
This submarine is believed to have an X-shaped rudder, a configuration "not seen before on any Chinese submarine."
An X-shaped rudder gives a submarine more maneuvering force and minimises the chance of an accidental dive compared to the traditional cruciform-shaped design.
It also reduces noise signature of submarine where avoiding detection is a key factor in submarine's survival.
There are also indications that it may have a vertical launch system which are less common in non-nuclear submarines.
If it is true, then it can likely accommodate between four and eight missiles, depending on their diameter.
The installation of the VLS could make the Chinese submarine one of the most potent non-nuclear boats in the world, and can pose a threat to India&rsquo;s Kalvari-class submarines.

Citing arbitrary detentions as well as exit bans that could prevent Americans from leaving the country, the State Department has issued a Level 3 travel advisory &mdash; the second-highest warning level &mdash; for mainland China. It urges Americans to &ldquo;reconsider travel&rdquo; to China.
Some American universities have suspended their China programs due to the travel advisory.
Lin, the Foreign Ministry spokesperson, said China has taken effective measures to protect the safety of foreigners. &ldquo;We believe that the isolated incident will not disrupt normal cultural and people-to-people exchanges between the two countries,&rdquo; he said.&nbsp;

China said there is &ldquo;no such thing as &lsquo;President&rsquo; of the Taiwan region&rdquo;, and said Beijing opposes all official interactions between the Taiwan authorities and countries having diplomatic relations with China.
"China has always firmly opposed any form of official interaction between the Taiwan regional authorities and countries that have diplomatic relations with China," Chinese Foreign Office spokesperson Mao Ning said on Thursday.
"There is only one China in the world. India has made serious political commitments regarding the one-China principle and should be vigilant against the political schemes of the Taiwan authorities and refrain from actions that violate the one-China principle," reported the Global Times, quoting spokesperson Ning.
It also reminded India of its commitment to Beijing's 'one-China policy' which refers to Taiwan as an inalienable part of China.
On June 4, the Taiwanese president was among the global leaders who congratulated Modi on his June 4 Lok Sabha election victory.
"We look forward to enhancing the fast-growing #Taiwan-#India partnership, expanding our collaboration on trade, technology &amp; other sectors to contribute to peace &amp; prosperity in the #IndoPacific,&rdquo; he wrote," wrote the Taiwanese President on X.
Reacting to the post, Modi replied and thanked Lai for his "warm message".
"I look forward to closer ties as we work towards mutually beneficial economic and technological partnership," added the prime minister-elect.

With $118.4 billion two-way commerce, China has become India's biggest trading partner in 2023-24, according to data by economic think tank GTRI. With this, China has surpassed US, as the bilateral trade between India and US stood at $118.3 billion in 2023-24.&nbsp;

As per the data, India's exports to China rose by 8.7% to $16.67 billion in the last fiscal. Sectors that saw the most growth includes iron ore, cotton yarn/fabrics/madeups, handloom, spices, fruits and vegetables, plastic and linoleum. Likewise, the imports from China increased by 3.24% to $101.7 billion.&nbsp;
Meanwhile, exports to the US dipped by 1.32% to $77.5 billion in 2023-24 as against $78.54 billion in 2022-23. The imports dipped by about 20% to $40.8 billion. Washington was the top trading partner of New Delhi during 2021-22 and 2022-23.

As per the Global Trade Research Initiative, India's trade dynamics with its top 15 trading partners underwent significant transformations from FY 2019 to Fy 2024. This impacted both the imports and exports &nbsp;along with the status of trade surplus or deficit across various sectors.
India's export to China declined marginally by 0.6%, from $16.75 billion to $16.66 billion, while imports from China surged by 44.7%, from $70.32 billion to $101.75 billion.&nbsp;
"This growth in imports led to an expanding trade deficit, rising from $53.57 billion in FY2019 to $85.09 billion in FY2024, highlighting concerns over stagnant exports amidst rising imports," GTRI Founder Ajay Srivastava said
Meanwhile, India's trade surplus with US expanded as the imports grew by 14.7%, from $35.55 billion to $40.78 billion while the exports grew significantly from $16.86 billion to $36.74 billion.
According to the commerce ministry data, China was India's top trading partner from 2013-14 till 2017-18 and also in 2020-21. Before China, the UAE was the country's largest trading partner. The US was the largest partner in 2021-22 and 2022-23.
In 2023-24, the UAE with $83.6 billion, was the third largest trading partner of India. It was followed by Russia ($65.7 billion), Saudi Arabia ($43.4 billion), and Singapore ($35.6 billion).

&nbsp;A section of a highway collapsed after heavy rains in southern China, sending cars tumbling down a slope and leaving at least 36 people dead, authorities said Thursday.
The Meizhou city government said that 23 vehicles have been found in a pit after a 17.9-metre long section of the highway gave way about 2 a.m. on Wednesday. Thirty other people had injuries, none of them life-threatening, a government statement said.
Parts of Guangdong province have seen record rains and flooding in the past two weeks, as well as hail. A tornado killed five people in Guangzhou, the provincial capital, last weekend.
Some villages in Meizhou flooded in early April, and the city had seen heavy rain in recent days.
The ground beneath the highway appeared to have caved in, along with the section of the road above it. Witnesses told local media they heard a loud noise and saw a wide hole open up behind them after driving past the section just before it collapsed.

Zhang Yongzhen wrote in an online post early on Wednesday that authorities had &ldquo;tentatively agreed&rdquo; to allow him and his team to return to his laboratory and continue their research for the time being.
Zhang had been staging a sit-in protest outside his lab since the weekend after he and his team were suddenly notified they had to leave their lab, a sign of Beijing's continuing pressure on scientists conducting research on the coronavirus.
The Shanghai Public Health Clinical Center previously said Zhang's lab was being renovated and was closed for safety reasons. But Zhang said his team wasn't offered an alternative until after the eviction and the new lab didn't meet safety standards for conducting their research.

The first scientist to publish a sequence of the COVID-19 virus in China staged a sit-in protest outside his lab after authorities locked him out of the facility &mdash; a sign of the Beijing's continuing pressure on scientists conducting research on the coronavirus. Zhang Yongzhen wrote in an online post Monday that he and his team had been suddenly notified they were being evicted from their lab, the latest in a series of setbacks, demotions and ousters since the virologist published the sequence in January 2020 without state approval. When Zhang tried to go to the lab over the weekend, guards barred him from entering. In protest, he sat outside on flattened cardboard in drizzling rain, pictures from the scene posted online show. News of the protest spread widely on Chinese social media and Zhang told a colleague he slept outside the lab &mdash; but it was not clear Tuesday if he remained there.
"I won't leave, I won't quit, I am pursuing science and the truth!&rdquo; he wrote in a post on Chinese social media platform Weibo that was later deleted. In an online statement, the Shanghai Public Health Clinical Center said that Zhang's lab was being renovated and was closed for &ldquo;safety reasons.&rdquo; It added that it had provided Zhang's team an alternative laboratory space.
But Zhang wrote online that his team wasn't offered an alternative until after they were notified of their eviction, and that the lab offered didn't meet safety standards for conducting their research, leaving his team in limbo.

When reached by phone on Tuesday, Zhang said it was &ldquo;inconvenient&rdquo; for him to speak, saying there were other people listening in. In an email Monday to collaborator Edward Holmes seen by AP, Zhang confirmed he was sleeping outside his lab after guards barred him from entering.
An AP reporter was blocked by a guard at an entrance to the compound housing Zhang's lab. A staff member at the National Health Commission, China's top health authority, said by phone that it was not the main department in charge and referred questions to the Shanghai government. The Shanghai government did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Zhang's ordeal started when he and his team decoded the virus on Jan. 5, 2020, and wrote an internal notice warning Chinese authorities of its potential to spread &mdash; but did not make the sequence public. The next day, Zhang's lab was ordered temporarily shut by China's top health official, and Zhang came under pressure by Chinese authorities. Around the time, China had reported several dozen people were being treated for a respiratory illness in the central city of Wuhan. Possible cases of the same illness had been reported in Hong Kong, South Korea and Taiwan involving recent travelers to the city. Foreign scientists soon learned that Zhang and other Chinese scientists had deciphered the virus and called on China to release the sequence. Zhang published it on Jan. 11, 2020, despite a lack of government permission. Sequencing a virus is key to the development of test kits, disease control measures and vaccinations. The virus eventually spread to every corner of the world, triggering a pandemic that disrupted lives and commerce, prompted widespread lockdowns and killed millions of people. Zhang was later awarded prizes in recognition for his work.
But Zhang's publication of the sequence also prompted additional scrutiny of his lab, according to Holmes, Zhang's collaborator and a virologist at the University of Sydney. Zhang was removed from a post at the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention and barred from collaborating with some of his former partners, crippling his research.
&ldquo;Ever since he defied the authorities by releasing the genome sequence of the virus that causes COVID-19 there has been a campaign against him,&rdquo; Holmes said. &ldquo;He's been broken by this process and I'm amazed he has been able to work at all.&rdquo;
