European Union's Copernicus Climate Change Service has said this year's summer was the hottest ever.

Scientists are saying that this year&rsquo;s summer has been significantly hotter and has broken all previous records.
The Copernicus Climate Change Service registered a spike of 0.3 degrees Celsius, which is significantly steeper than the usual upticks. The previous global average temperature record was 16.77 degrees Celsius.
This year&rsquo;s July and August also set individual temperature records, which were estimated to be 1.5 degrees warmer than pre-industrial levels.
UN Secretary-General Ant&oacute;nio Guterres also addressed the new record and passed warnings against climate change. &ldquo;Our planet has just endured a season of simmering &ndash; the hottest summer on record. Climate breakdown has begun,&rdquo; he said, as per CNN.

These changes are likely attributed to human-caused climate change rather than natural variations.
In their statement, the researchers revealed that over 56% of the world's oceans have experienced colour shifts that cannot be explained by natural variability alone.&nbsp;
The study, published in the journal Nature, highlighted that tropical oceans near the equator, in particular, have exhibited a noticeable increase in green hues over the past two decades. This change in colour is indicative of alterations within the ecosystems of these regions.
The researchers employed satellite technology to monitor changes in ocean colour by measuring the reflection of green and blue light from the sea surface. They utilized data collected by the Aqua satellite, which has been observing ocean colour alterations for over 20 years. This satellite can detect differences that are not perceivable to the human eye.
By analyzing data on colour variations between 2002 and 2022, the researchers then employed climate change models to simulate the potential impact on the oceans under two scenarios: one with additional planet-heating pollution and the other without.&nbsp;
Remarkably, the observed changes in colour closely aligned with the predicted outcomes if greenhouse gases were introduced into the atmosphere.
According to the study, approximately 50% of the world's oceans experienced a colour change, confirming the correlation between human-induced climate change and the alteration of oceanic hues.

In the report published this week, analysts predicted rising temperatures mean annual inflation will be between 0.32 to 1.18 percentage points higher by 2035. That will create problems for consumers as well as policy makers, with the ECB&rsquo;s target to keep inflation at 2%.
The research paper found that warmer temperatures will boost annual food inflation by between 0.92 and a hefty 3.23 percentage points.&nbsp; &ldquo;Climate change poses risks to price stability by having an upward impact on inflation,&rdquo; said the researchers Maximilian Kotz, Friderike Kuik, Eliza Lis and Christiane Nickel. That would &ldquo;place global incomes under pressure from rising prices and could impact inflation expectations, thereby requiring monetary policy to react.&rdquo;

"Glaciers are critical to all life on earth. Over centuries, they carved out the landmasses we call home. Today, they cover 10 per cent of our world. Glaciers are also the world's water towers," Guterres said in his remarks to an event on the International Year of Glaciers&rsquo; Preservation Wednesday.
Guterres voiced concern that human activity is driving the planet's temperature to dangerous new levels and "melting glaciers are the canary in the coalmine".
Antarctica is losing an average of 150 billion tons of ice mass every year while the Greenland ice cap is melting even faster &mdash; losing 270 billion tonnes per year.

The study also states that annual pollen emissions will increase by 40% due to weather changes but will drastically rise to 250% if carbon dioxide and other harmful gases from ignition of coal, gasoline and natural gases are continued to be produced at current rates.
A recent report from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration noted that countries globally experienced record-breaking warm temperatures last month as the average temperatures rose 2.7 degrees above the 20th-century standard.

At COP26 in Glasgow, countries agreed to limit global heating to 1.5C above pre-industrial levels, a threshold set out in the 2015 Paris climate agreement, which would avoid the worst ravages of climate change. Even a fraction of a degree more can lead to many more lives lost. China, the United States, Europe and India have all failed to reduce their emissions enough to meet their Paris Agreement goals.
The inequality that led to and is propagated by climate change was at the forefront of COP27. Poorer nations, which have historically contributed the least to climate change, but bear the brunt of its most devastating consequences today, are seeking more reparations from rich countries, many of which have grown their economies and amassed wealth by burning fossil fuels.
The Indian contingent at COP27 was led by Union Environment Minister Bhupendra Yadav, who also campaigned for a new fund for addressing loss and damage. India has launched the LiFE - Lifestyle for Environment movement, which encourages people the world over to live a lifestyle that is in tune with our planet and does not harm it.

The desire by the world&rsquo;s affluent to consume out-of-season produce is making large contributions to global greenhouse gas emissions, new research has suggested. The study also found that food is responsible for about 16 billion tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions each year.&nbsp;
For the study, experts used the concept of &ldquo;food miles&rdquo; to measure the distance a food item travels from where it&rsquo;s produced to where it&rsquo;s consumed. Researchers analysed 74 countries, 37 economic sectors and four transport modes; water, rail, road and air.&nbsp;
As per the findings, high-income countries are disproportionate contributors to greenhouse gas emissions. They constitute 12.5% of the world&rsquo;s population yet generate 46% of international greenhouse gas&nbsp;emissions.
Eating food grown and produced locally is a powerful way to take action on climate change. Consumers also have the power to reduce food transport emissions by adopting a more sustainable diet, researchers concluded.&nbsp;

The study, published on December 25 2022, also found just USD 23 million per year would be enough to implement ten key strategies to reduce threats to Antarctica&rsquo;s biodiversity.
This relatively small sum would benefit up to 84% of terrestrial bird, mammal, and plant groups.
The journal identified climate change as the biggest threat to Antarctica&rsquo;s unique plant and animal species. Limiting global warming is the most effective way to secure their future. The species includes two flowering plants, hardy moss and lichens, numerous microbes, tough invertebrates and hundreds of thousands of breeding seabirds, including the emperor and Ad&eacute;lie penguins.
Antarctica also provides priceless services to the planet and humankind. It helps regulate the global climate by driving atmospheric circulation and ocean currents, and absorbing heat and carbon dioxide. Antarctica even drives weather patterns in Australia.
Some people think of Antarctica as a safe, protected wilderness. But the continent&rsquo;s plants and animals still face numerous threats.
Chief among them is climate change. As global warming worsens, Antarctica&rsquo;s ice-free areas are predicted to expand, rapidly changing the habitat available for wildlife. And as extreme weather events such as heatwaves become more frequent, Antarctica&rsquo;s plants and animals are expected to suffer.
What&rsquo;s more, scientists and tourists visiting the icy continent each year can harm the environment through, for example, pollution and disturbing the ground or plants. And the combination of more human visitors and milder temperatures in Antarctica also creates the conditions for invasive species to thrive.
So how will these threats affect Antarctic species? And what conservation strategies can be used to mitigate them? The research set out to find the answers.
What the research found? The study involved working with 29 experts in Antarctic biodiversity, conservation, logistics, tourism and policy. The experts assessed how Antarctica&rsquo;s species will respond to future threats.
Under a worst-case scenario, the populations of 97% of Antarctic terrestrial species and breeding seabirds could decline between now and 2100, if current conservation efforts stay on the same trajectory.
At best, the populations of 37% of species would decline. The most likely scenario is a decline in 65% of the continent&rsquo;s plants and wildlife by the year 2100.
The emperor penguin relies on ice for breeding, and is the most vulnerable of Antarctica&rsquo;s species. In the worst-case scenario, the emperor penguin is at risk of extinction by 2100 &ndash; the only species in our study facing this fate.
Climate change will also likely wreak havoc on other Antarctic specialists, such as the nematode worm Scottnema lindsayae. The species lives in extremely dry soils, and is at risk as warming and ice-melt increases soil moisture.
Climate change won&rsquo;t lead to a decline in all Antarctic species &ndash; in fact, some may benefit initially. These include the two Antarctic plants, some mosses and the gentoo penguin.

These species may increase their populations and become more widely distributed in the event of more liquid water (as opposed to ice), more ice-free land and warmer temperatures.
So, what to do? Clearly, current conservation efforts are insufficient to conserve Antarctic species in a changing world.
The experts the journal worked with identified ten management strategies to mitigate threats to the continent&rsquo;s land-based species.
Unsurprisingly, mitigating climate change (listed as the &ldquo;influence external policy&rdquo; strategy) would provide the greatest benefit. Reducing climate change to no more than 2 degrees Celsius of warming would benefit up to 68% of terrestrial species and breeding seabirds.
The next two most beneficial strategies were &ldquo;managing non-native species and disease&rdquo; and &ldquo;managing and protecting species&rdquo;. These strategies include measures such as granting special protections to species, and increasing biosecurity to prevent introductions of non-native species.
How much would it all cost? The United Nations&rsquo; COP15 nature summit concluded in Canada this week. Funding for conservation projects was a core agenda item.
In Antarctica, at least, such conservation is surprisingly cheap. The research found implementing all strategies together could cost as little as USD 23 million per year until 2100 (or about USD 2 billion in total).
By comparison, the cost to recover Australia&rsquo;s threatened species is estimated at more than USD 1.2 billion per year (although this is far more than is actually spent).
However, for the &ldquo;influence external policy&rdquo; strategy (relating to climate change mitigation) we included only the cost of advocating for policy change. We did not include the global cost of reducing carbon emissions, nor did we balance these against the much greater economic costs of not acting.
As Antarctica faces increasing pressure from climate change and human activities, a combination of regional and global conservation efforts is needed. Spending just USD 23 million a year to preserve Antarctica&rsquo;s biodiversity and ecosystems is an absolute bargain.

Severe heat waves, responsible for thousands of deaths across India over the last few decades, are increasing with alarming frequency and soon the country could become one of the first places in the world to experience heat waves that break the human survivability limit, according to a new report.
The World Bank report titled "Climate Investment Opportunities in India's Cooling Sector" said the country is experiencing higher temperatures that arrive earlier and stay far longer.
"In April 2022, India was plunged into the grip of a punishing early spring heat wave that brought the country to a standstill, with temperatures in the capital, New Delhi, topping 46 degrees Celsius (oC) (114 degrees Fahrenheit). The month of March, which witnessed extraordinary spikes in temperatures, was the hottest ever recorded", it said.

The report will be released during the two-day "India Climate and Development Partners' Meet" being organised by World Bank in partnership with the Kerala government here.
Predicting that heat waves situation in India could break the human survivability limit, it said the recent heat wave supports what many climate scientists have long cautioned about with reference to rising temperatures across South Asia.
"In August 2021, the Sixth Assessment Report of the Inter-governmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) warned that the Indian subcontinent would suffer more frequent and intense heat waves over the coming decade.
"The G20 Climate Risk Atlas also warned in 2021 that heat waves across India were likely to last 25 times longer by 2036-65 if carbon emissions remain high, as in the IPCC's worst-case emission scenario," the report said.
It also warned that rising heat across India can jeopardize economic productivity.
"Up to 75 percent of India's workforce, or 380 million people, depend on heat-exposed labor, at times working in potentially life-threatening temperatures. ...By 2030, India may account for 34 million of the projected 80 million global job losses from heat stress associated productivity decline", the report said.
It further said India showed the largest heat exposure impacts on heavy labor among South Asian countries, with more than 101 billion hours lost a year.
Analysis by global management consulting firm, McKinsey &amp; Company shows that lost labor from rising heat and humidity could put up to 4.5 per cent of India's GDP &ndash;approximately USD 150-250 billion &ndash; at risk by the end of this decade.
It said India's long-term food security and public health security will depend on a reliable cold chain network.
Transporting food and pharmaceutical goods across India requires a system of cold chain refrigeration that works every step of the way.
"A single temperature lapse in the journey can break the cold chain, spoiling fresh produce and weakening the potency of vaccines. With only 4 per cent of fresh produce in India covered by cold chain facilities, annual estimated food losses total USD 13 billion", it said.
It also noted that the third largest producer of pharmaceuticals in the world, pre-COVID-19, India lost approximately 20 percent of temperature-sensitive medical products and 25 percent of vaccines due to broken cold chains, leading to losses of USD 313 million a year.
"As temperatures rise across India, so will the demand for cooling. However, in a country where two-thirds of the population live on less than USD 2 a day, and where the average cost of an air-conditioning unit can vary between USD 260 and USD 500, air-cooling systems are a luxury available only to a few." According to analysis presented in the India Cooling Action Plan (ICAP), only eight per cent of Indian households own air-conditioning units.
"Indoor and electric fans can help to maintain thermal comfort, but these too are expensive to buy and inefficient. As a result, many poor and marginalized communities across India are more vulnerable to extreme heat, living in inadequately ventilated, hot and crowded homes without proper access to cooling", the report warned.
Staying cool during extreme heat is about more than just comfort &ndash; it can constitute the precarious line between life and death, it added.

Negotiators say they have struck a potential breakthrough deal on the thorniest issue of United Nations climate talks in Egypt: the creation of a fund for compensating poor nations that are victims of extreme weather worsened by rich countries' carbon pollution. Several cabinet ministers from across the globe told The Associated Press that agreement was reached on a fund for what negotiators call loss and damage. It's a big win for poorer nations which have long called for cash &mdash; sometimes viewed as reparations &mdash; because they are often the victims of climate disasters despite having contributed little to the pollution that heats up the globe. But other parts of a deal, outlined in a package of proposals put out earlier in the day by the Egyptian chairs of the talks, are still being hammered out as negotiators head into what they hope is their final session. There was strong concern among both developed and developing countries about proposals on cutting greenhouse gas emissions, known as mitigation. Officials said the language put forward by Egypt backtracked on some of the commitments made in Glasgow aimed at keeping alive the target of limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius (2.7 Fahrenheit) since pre-industrial times. The world has already warmed 1.1 degrees Celsius (2 degrees Fahrenheit) since the mid 19th century. Some of the Egyptian language on mitigation seemingly reverted to the 2015 Paris agreement, which was before scientists knew how crucial the 1.5 degree threshold was and heavily mentioned a weaker 2-degree Celsius (3.6 degrees Fahrenheit) goal, which is why scientists and Europeans are afraid of backtracking, said climate scientist Maarten van Aalst of the Red Cross Red Crescent Climate Centre.

According to the latest draft, the fund would initially draw on contributions from developed countries and other private and public sources such as international financial institutions. While major emerging economies such as China would not initially be required to contribute, that option remains on the table and will be negotiated over the coming years. This is a key demand by the European Union and the United States, who argue that China and other large polluters currently classified as developing countries have the financial clout and responsibility to pay their way. An overarching decision that sums up the outcomes of the climate talks doesn't include India's call to phase down oil and natural gas, in addition to last year's agreement to wean the world from &ldquo;unabated&rdquo; coal.

The annual United Nations Climate Change Conference, COP27, is being held from November 6 to 18 in the Egyptian Red Sea Resort of Sharm El Sheikh. Over 90 heads of state and representatives of 190 countries are expected to attend the event.
