Colombian President Gustavo Petro on Wednesday announced his government will break diplomatic relations with Israel effective Thursday in the latest escalation of tensions between the countries over the Israel-Hamas war.
Petro again described Israel's siege of Gaza as &ldquo;genocide.&rdquo; He previously suspended purchases of weapons from Israel and compared that country's actions in Gaza to those of Nazi Germany.
&ldquo;Tomorrow, diplomatic relations with the State of Israel will be broken &hellip; for having a genocidal president,&rdquo; Petro said during an International Workers' Day march in Colombia's capital. &ldquo;If Palestine dies, humanity dies, and we are not going to let it die.&rdquo; Israel's Foreign Minister Israel Katz quickly rebuked Petro's comments on the platform X.
&ldquo;History will remember that Gustavo Petro decided to side with the most despicable monsters known to mankind who burned babies, murdered children, raped women and kidnapped innocent civilians,&rdquo; he said.
Weeks after the Oct. 7 Hamas attack on southern Israel that sparked the current war in Gaza and killed some 1,200 people, Petro recalled Colombia's ambassador to Israel as he criticized the country's military offensive.
Historically, Colombia had been one of Israel's closest partners in Latin America. But relations between the two nations have cooled since Petro was elected as Colombia's first leftist president in 2022.
Colombia uses Israeli-built warplanes and machine guns to fight drug cartels and rebel groups, and both countries signed a free trade agreement in 2020.
&ldquo;Relations between Israel and Colombia always were warm and no antisemitic and hate-filled president will succeed in changing that," Katz wrote Tuesday. "The state of Israel will continue to defend its citizens without worry and without fear.&rdquo; The South American country deepened its military ties with Israel in the late 1980s by purchasing Kfir fighter jets that were used by Colombia's air force in numerous attacks on remote guerrilla camps that debilitated the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia. The attacks helped push the group into peace talks that resulted in its disarmament in 2016.

Residents of Bogota are facing fewer showers, minimal laundry loads and dirty cars as the Colombian capital imposes water rations due to a severe drought aggravated by the El Nino climate phenomenon.
Bogota has become the latest major city around the world to face a water crisis in recent years due to intense dry spells and President Gustavo Petro vowed Thursday to boost investment to protect the valuable resource.
Some 10 million people in the Colombian capital and surrounds are being impacted by new restrictions that impose 24-hour water cuts every ten days by sector.
"The situation is critical," said Mayor Carlos Fernando Galan.
In the mountainous suburb La Calera in the sprawling Andean city, residents have already suffered occasional cuts since February, often resorting to tanker trucks that wind through the steep streets to deliver drinking water.
"There are things we can no longer do, like washing the car," said Clara Escobar, 36, a graphic designer who came to fill two buckets from the tanker.
"We shower less" and "we wash the clothes (only) when necessary."
<h3>Dams lowest in decades</h3>
A lack of rain and unusual heat has seen Colombia's reservoirs dry up at an alarming rate.
The Chingaza paramo -- an alpine wetland system rich in glacial lakes -- provides some 70 percent of Bogota's drinking water, and its dams are at their lowest level since 1980.
Environment Minister Susana Muhamad said significant rains were only expected at the end of April or early May.
Colombia is blessed with abundant freshwater sources.
Nevertheless, millions lack access to clean water as a result of severe water pollution, deforestation, and agriculture.
<h3>'Substantial change'</h3>
In a lengthy post on X, President Gustavo Petro said he had ordered "a substantial change" to ensure that in the next 30 years, the entire population has clean water.
"There will be droughts worse than the one we are facing," he said, adding that Bogota residents could now judge whether "unhindered urbanization" was sustainable.
He said half of the country's water supply depends on its moors, jungles and Andean forests "that have already been pillaged by 80 percent for agriculture or mining for construction."
Petro said the country had long prioritized urbanization at the expense of the "serious financing of adaptation to climate change."
He said at current investment levels it would take a century to provide clean drinking water and proper sanitation to the 17 million people who currently do not have it.
Petro added that providing these people with drinking water would cost $26 billion.
"That is absurdly irrational in the midst of a climate crisis that will worsen due to the growing consumption of coal and oil in rich northern societies."

"This year sexual violence has skyrocketed," said Angela Maria Rosales, national director of the non-governmental organization SOS Children's Villages Colombia, which promotes the event.
Between January and September of this year, 28,300 cases of alleged child sexual violence have been reported in the country, according to figures from the state-run Colombian Institute of Family Welfare (ICBF).
In the same period in 2021 there were 27,210 cases in which children turned to the entity for help.
The challenge, according to SOS Children's Villages Colombia, is to achieve greater efficiency in the judicial system that currently takes an average of four years to obtain a conviction against the adult abuser. Only 3% of the cases are attended and end in a conviction.
In the square a group of people held signs denouncing what they say is a "97% impunity" in cases of child sexual abuse.
In Colombia, there is already a tool that is about to come into force that could help in assisting child victims through a special investigation unit of the prosecutor's office.
What activists for children want is that it be implemented efficiently.

Reports say she was exhausted and suffering from hypothermia after staying afloat for more than eight hours.
But this is where the fairy tale ends. After Angelica Gaitan&nbsp;was treated at the hospital she revealed that she had suffered domestic abuse at the hands of her husband for 20 years and in 2018 she finally decided to run away when her husband tried to kill her.&nbsp;
Angelica tried to jump into the sea and end her life after she turned out of the rescue centre. According to reports, her daughter has been tracked down and is now raising money to bring Angelica back to Colombia.&nbsp;
