Puducherry Chief Minister N Rangasamy on Tuesday that the government would issue circulars to all shops and establishments, directing them to display their names in Tamil.
Responding to a plea by Independent member G Nehru alias Kuppusamy, who raised the issue during Zero Hour in Assembly, Mr Rangasamy said, "Strict instructions will be issued through the circular, ensuring that shop owners display Tamil versions of their establishment names on signboards".
The independent member emphasised that there should be no leniency in the matter and urged the government to issue circulars with strict directions to honour the Tamil language.
The Chief Minister stated that the government had also decided that all invitations for government department functions should include a Tamil version. "This is out of love and respect for the Tamil language," he added.
Earlier, during Question Hour, PWD and Fisheries Minister K Lakshminarayanan informed the House that the government would place boulders along the entire 24-km stretch of the Puducherry coastline as part of measures to prevent sea erosion.
He noted that approximately Rs 1,000 crore would be required for the project, with funds from the Centre expected to support its implementation.&nbsp;

This sparked accusations from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), claiming that the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) was effectively banning Holi celebrations.
Suvendu Adhikari, Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal assembly, alleged this was not an isolated case but part of a larger trend of governmental appeasement.
He noted perceived police interference during Holi, citing past instances such as a 2025 police station initiative coinciding with Ramzan and alleged directives to wrap up the Basanta Utsav celebrations by 10 am in Shantiniketan.
Basanta Utsav, overlapping with Holi and Dol Jatra, is a distinctive celebration initiated by Tagore in the 1920s. It fuses cultural events with the joy of spring.
State Forest Minister Birbaha Hansda refuted claims of restrictions on playing Holi, maintaining the poster was merely an environmental advisory.
She accused the BJP of politicizing the issue, asserting, "There is no restriction. If anyone wants to play Holi, they can." She also called for a report from the District Forest Officer to further investigate the matter.

The private jet she was traveling in, en route to a political event in Karimnagar, crashed, claiming her life at the age of 31. Reports suggest that Soundarya was pregnant at the time, and her body could not be retrieved from the crash site.

The BJP said the temple&rsquo;s construction will begin on January 22, 2025, exactly one year after the inauguration of the Ram temple in Ayodhya. BJP&rsquo;s Berhampore organisational district president, Shakharav Sarkar, said land for the temple has already been identified, and the project is estimated to cost Rs 10 crore.&nbsp;
"We have already identified a land in Beharampore area and the construction work for the Ram Temple based on the design of the temple on Ayodhya will begin soon," he told reporters.
Kabir, the TMC MLA from Beldanga, had on Tuesday announced plans for the mosque, which he said would honour the sentiments of the region&rsquo;s significant minority population.
His remarks have sparked political controversy, with opposition parties accusing him of attempting to polarise communities for political gain.
The BJP&rsquo;s counterproposal to build a Ram temple is seen as a strategic move to strengthen its presence among the Hindu community in Murshidabad, a district where minorities make up around 75 per cent of the population.
Responding to the controversy, the TMC distanced itself from Kabir&rsquo;s remarks, describing them as his personal opinion.
&ldquo;The TMC has nothing to do with this statement of Kabir,&rdquo; a senior party leader said.&nbsp;
Kabir&rsquo;s announcement has also drawn criticism from the Congress, which accused him of playing divisive politics in a sensitive region.

Addressing a rally of the National Cadet Corps (NCC) at the Cariappa Ground in Delhi Cantonment, Modi said the mantra of unity was the only way for India to achieve grandeur.
The prime minister said that the entire world was looking towards India because of the youth of the country. Modi said his government had unleashed digital, start-up and innovation revolutions which are benefiting the youth.

At the same time, the prime minister urged caution against attempts to divide the country.

"Despite such efforts, there will never be differences among the people of India," he said. "Maa ke doodh main kabhi darar nahi ho sakti," Modi said.
"The mantra of unity is the ultimate antidote. The mantra of unity is a pledge as well as India&rsquo;s strength. This is the only way India will achieve grandeur," the prime minister said.
The prime minister's remarks came against the backdrop of the raging controversy over a BBC documentary on the 2002 Gujarat riots that has been banned in India.
Modi lauded the NCC cadets who participated in the Republic Day celebration and said the priority for the country would always be the young people who are brimming with energy and enthusiasm.
