The national capital on Sunday reported 3,194 Covid cases, the highest single-day rise since May 20, as the positivity rate rose to 4.59%, according to data shared by Delhi's health department.
The city also reported one death due to the disease. Sunday's tally of coronavirus cases was 17% higher than the 2,716 infections registered a day before.
If the positivity rate is over 5% for two consecutive days it would trigger a 'red alert' under the Delhi Disaster Management Authority-approved Graded Response Action Plan leading to a 'total curfew' and halting of most economic activities.
Mumbai also recorded a steep rise in the daily coronavirus cases with 8,063 infections on Sunday.
On Saturday, the city had recorded 6,347 infections, and Sunday's addition was a rise of 27%, officials pointed out.
The city did not see any death during the day due to the infection and 89% of the cases reported are asymptomatic, it added.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Sunday said that though the number of daily Covid-19 cases and active cases are increasing in the city, there is no need to panic as those are very mild and do not need hospitalisation.
He presented data to show that despite an increase in the number of cases, bed occupancy in hospitals is even lesser than one per cent and is very low as compared to last year's deadly second wave of coronavirus in April.
Active Covid-19 cases rose from about 2,000 on December 29, 2021 to 6,000 on January 1, but the number of patients in hospitals dipped from 262 t0 247 during this period, Kejriwal said in a virtual press conference.
He added that on March 27 last year, Delhi had 6,600 active cases and 1,150 oxygen beds were occupied. As many as 145 patients were on ventilator compared to five now, he said.

Talking about vaccination, Aggarwal said that approximately 90% of the adult population in India has been vaccinated against Covid-19 with the first dose.

How many doses are recommended?
Both Covovax and Corbevax are 2-dose vaccines. The recommended gap by WHO between two doses of Covovax is 21 days. For Corbevax, the gap recommended by experts is 28 days. The Indian govt has however not issued any guidelines yet. 
How effective are both vaccines?
Novavax, the developers of Covovax, conducted phase-3 efficacy trials in the USA and UK wherein the efficacy of vaccine is reported to be 90.4 per cent and 86.9 per cent respectively, the statement said.
Biological-E, co-developer of Corbevax, has conducted phase 3 trials in the India but the results have not been published yet.

A 'precaution dose' or an additional dose of the Covid-19 vaccine will available to people above 60 years of age with co-morbidities on doctors advice from January 10, 2022. 
However, people eligible for these doses will need a medical certificate proving their co-morbidity to take it, Dr RS Sharma, chief executive officer at National Health Authority who also heads the functioning of CoWIN platform, told News18. 
The certificate signed by any registered medical practitioner, can either be uploaded on Co-WIN while registering or hard copy can be carried by the beneficiary to the vaccination centres.
Dr Sharma said that the govt has specified 20 comorbidities, including cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, stem cell transplant, kidney disease or on dialysis, cirrhosis, cancer, sickle cell disease, and current prolonged use of steroids or immunosuppressant drugs.
According to a report based on sources by India Today, the gap between the second dose and the additional third dose is likely to be 9 months to 12 months. 
Along with the elderly, all healthcare and frontline workers will also be given 'precaution dose' from January 10, 2022.

Maharashtra reported 1,410 new Covid-19 cases on Friday, 20 of those infections were due to the Omicron variant. The state now has 108 Omicron variant cases. 
Gathering of more than 5 people at any place during the night will not be allowed but essential services will be exempt. 
Maharashtra minister Anil Parab said not more than 100 people will be allowed attend wedding events and religious programmes organised in an enclosed place and 250 people will be allowed at open-air events. Hotel, spa, theatres can continue their operations with 50% of their total capacity, the minister said.
In Haryana, a night curfew has been imposed from 11pm to 5am till further orders. 
He has also directed banks, malls and others public places to mandate double vaccination for entry and no more than 200 people will allowed at such places and public events from January 1, 2022. For public gathering in open-air spaces, 300 people will be allowed. 
The Gujarat has extended night curfew times in 8 cities by 2 hours. 
The curfew would be in force from 11 pm to 5 am instead of 1 am to 5 am from December 25 in the cities of Ahmedabad, Surat, Rajkot, Vadodara, Junagadh, Jamnagar, Bhavnagar and Gandhinagar.

In view of the rising Covid cases and Omicron threat, the Delhi government will increase daily test capacity to three lakh and strengthen home isolation module to handle one lakh positive cases each day, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said on Thursday.
Earlier in the day, he reviewed the Covid situation and the Omicron threat in Delhi in a meeting with his ministers and senior officers.
The chief minister said Omicron was characterised by a fast spread and mild infection and asked people not to panic as the Delhi government was prepared to deal with it if there was a surge in the number of infections.
Since Omicron infection does not require hospitalisation in most cases, the home-isolation module is being strengthened and an agency was being hired for it, he said.
The capacity to follow up patients in home isolation will be increased from the current 1,100 cases daily to one lakh each day. As soon someone tests positive, a phone call will be made to the person and the next day a medical team will visit the person to provide him with a kit containing medicines and other items, Kejriwal said.
Also, patients in home isolation will be counselled by the doctors for 10 days, said the chief minister.
The government will also increase daily Covid test capacity from around 60,000 to 70,000 at present to three lakh per day. A two-month stock of required medicines will also be maintained, he added.
Kejriwal also said that his govt is arranging medical oxygen and 15 tankers will delivered to them in 3 weeks.

In view of the rising Covid cases and Omicron threat, the Delhi government will increase daily test capacity to three lakh and strengthen home isolation module to handle one lakh positive cases each day, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said on Thursday.
Earlier in the day, he reviewed the Covid situation and the Omicron threat in Delhi in a meeting with his ministers and senior officers.
The chief minister said Omicron was characterised by a fast spread and mild infection and asked people not to panic as the Delhi government was prepared to deal with it if there was a surge in the number of infections.

Since Omicron infection does not require hospitalisation in most cases, the home-isolation module is being strengthened and an agency was being hired for it, he said.
The capacity to follow up patients in home isolation will be increased from the current 1,100 cases daily to one lakh each day. As soon someone tests positive, a phone call will be made to the person and the next day a medical team will visit the person to provide him with a kit containing medicines and other items, Kejriwal said.
Also, patients in home isolation will be counselled by the doctors for 10 days, said the chief minister.
The government will also increase daily Covid test capacity from around 60,000 to 70,000 at present to three lakh per day. A two-month stock of required medicines will also be maintained, he added.
