The Punjab Vigilance Bureau (VB), during its ongoing campaign against corruption in the state, on Wednesday has apprehended Patwari Surjit Singh, posted at Qila Lal Singh in Gurdaspur district for accepting a bribe of Rs 20000.

An official spokesperson of the state VB said the above-mentioned accused has been arrested on a complaint lodged by Varinder Singh, a resident of village Qila Lal Singh in Gurdaspur. He further added that the complainant has approached the VB and alleged that his land was acquired by the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) for construction of expressway and the accused Patwari has demanded a bribe of Rs 20,000 for making a report in his favor to include three borewells on the land.
The spokesperson informed that after a preliminary enquiry into this complaint the VB team laid a trap during which the accused was caught red handed while he was accepting a bribe of Rs 20,000 from the complainant in the presence of two official witnesses.&nbsp;
He added that in this regard a case under Prevention of Corruption Act has been registered at VB police station, Amritsar range. The accused would be produced in the competent court tomorrow and further investigations into this case was under progress.

The Madras High Court judge suspended the sentence for 30 days to allow the convicts to challenge the sentence in the Supreme Court.

In a disproportionate assets case, the Madras High Court on Thursday sentenced Tamil Nadu Higher Education Minister K Ponmudy to three years in prison under the Prevention of Corruption Act and consequently, he stands disqualified as a legislator and loses the post of Minister.
Justice G Jayachandran also sentenced Ponmudy's wife P Visalakshi to three years in jail. The judge also imposed a fine of Rs 50 lakh each on Ponmudy and his wife.
The HC had already convicted the minister and his wife in the case and pronounced the sentence today.
Senior counsel N R Ellango, appearing for the accused, prayed the court to grant leave to enable them to file Special Leave Petition before the Supreme Court and also to suspend the sentence.
The judge granted leave for 30 days and also suspended the sentence for 30 days.
On completion of the duration of suspension, they have to surrender before the trial court in Villupuram, the judge added.
Legal experts said Ponmudy, following his conviction and prison term, stands disqualified from the post of MLA and he also loses the post of Minister.

Arrested in alleged corruption case, former Andhra CM Naidu produced in court

Telugu Desam Party president N Chandrababu Naidu was produced in an Anti-Corruption Bureau court here on Sunday morning amid tight security, a day after being arrested in a case of alleged corruption.
The former Andhra Pradesh chief minister is being represented by Supreme Court lawyer Siddarth Luthra and a team of advocates.
Several TDP senior leaders and the party cadre gathered at the court complex.
At 3:40 am, he was taken to Government General Hospital in Vijayawada for medical tests following a 10-hour-long interrogation at the CID's Special Investigation Team (SIT) office at Kunchanapalli here.
Following the tests, which lasted for about 50 minutes, Naidu was taken back to the SIT office even though it was expected that he would be directly taken to a local court.
The TDP chief's son Nara Lokesh, wife Nara Bhuvaneswari and others were waiting at the ACB Court, TDP spokesperson Pattabhi Ram Kommareddy told PTI.
"We thought that he would be taken to the court. But they brought him back to the SIT office. Lokesh and Bhuvaneswari were waiting at the Court but all of a sudden the convoy turned towards the SIT office," Kommareddy said.
Wondering whether Naidu would be produced in the court before 24 hours of arrest, he said they were surprised and confused.
Naidu was arrested in connection with the alleged Skill Development Corporation scam after a pre-dawn police operation at Gnanapuram in Nandyala on Saturday. He was arrested by the CID around 6 am from a marriage hall outside which his caravan was parked.
It has been alleged that the scam led to a Rs 300-crore loss to the state exchequer. The TDP chief has been named the 'principal conspirator' in the case.

The Lokayukta police in Madhya Pradesh on Friday raided three places linked to a 34-year-old assistant engineer working on contract with a government body and unearthed unaccounted assets worth nearly ₹7 crore, an official said.
Accused Hema Meena works with the MP Police Housing Corporation (MPPHC) on a contractual basis and draws a monthly pay of ₹30,000. The recovered assets include a TV set worth nearly ₹30 lakh, he said.
&ldquo;We carried out raids at three locations linked to Hema Meena, including her farmhouse at Bilkhiriya area in Bhopal around 1 am on Friday,&rdquo; Bhopal Lokayukta Superintendent of Police Manu Vyas told PTI over the phone.
The official said assets worth nearly ₹7 crore disproportionate to her known sources of income were unearthed.
The raids were conducted after the Lokayukta police received complaints that she had amassed huge wealth by unfair means, the official said.
&ldquo;We found 65 canines, including more than 30 country dogs, at her farmhouse spread over an area of 20,000 square feet with a built-up area of 10,000 square feet. Besides, we found around 30 cattle there. Some of them are Gir cows,&rdquo; he added.
Seven to eight vehicles, including high-end Sports Utility Vehicles (SUV), were found parked at the woman&rsquo;s farmhouse, the SP said.
The Lokayukta police have recovered gold worth ₹10 lakh and ₹77,000 cash apart from documents showing ownership of land in Bhopal, Raisen and Vidisha districts.
&ldquo;We have registered a case against her under the Prevention of Corruption Act. We have served her a show-cause notice. If she does not come up with a satisfactory reply, we are going to produce Hema in a local court and seek her remand,&rdquo; Vyas said.

Kishida on Tuesday also replaced parliamentary vice-minister for internal affairs Mio Sugita, who has made past derogatory remarks against sexual and ethnic minorities. Sugita said in 2018 same-sex couples don't produce children and are &ldquo;unproductive&rdquo; and in 2016 scoffed at those wearing traditional ethnic costumes at an United Nations' committee meeting as &ldquo;middle-aged women in costume play&rdquo;.
Kishida said Sugita submitted her resignation saying that she cannot bend her personal beliefs while she retracted some of her earlier comments.
Kishida had been seen as a stable choice as leader after his victory in the July vote, but his popularity has plummeted over the Liberal Democratic Party's widespread church ties that surfaced after the assassination of former leader Shinzo Abe.

It gave him a seven-year sentence for money laundering and four years for accepting a bribe.
This was not the first time Yameen was found guilty. In a separate case in 2019, Yameen was found guilty of money laundering and sentenced to five years in prison.

Bihar IPS officer Amit Lodha, who rose to prominence following the release of the web series "Khakee: The Bihar Chapter", was suspended after a case was registered against him on charges of corruption and for allegedly entering into a commercial agreement with Netflix while being on a government post.
According to an official statement, Lodha is accused of using his position for financial gains by signing an agreement with the streaming platform for making a deal with the production house Friday Storytellers while he was in the position of an IPS officer.
The statement said that during the investigation by the department, the allegations of corruption against Lodha were found to be true, based on which a case was registered on December 7 by the Special Vigilance Unit under sections 120B and 168 of the IPC along with sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act ie PC Act.

Four years ago, Luiz In&aacute;cio Lula da Silva's reputation and political future were in tatters. After an unlikely rise from poverty to union leader to Brazil's presidency, the man universally known as Lula had landed in prison.
On Sunday &ndash; in yet another twist &ndash; Brazilian voters chose him by the narrowest of margins to once again lead the world's fourth-largest democracy. He will also be putting his legacy on the line.
&ldquo;They tried to bury me alive, and I am here,&rdquo; da Silva said in a speech on Sunday night after results that confirmed his third presidential win.
&ldquo;I am here to govern in a very difficult situation. But I have faith in God that, with our people's help, we will find a way out for this country.&rdquo; The life of da Silva has unfolded in such a unique, extraordinary way that, were it fiction, it would strain credulity.
His family moved from Brazil's poor northeast region to Sao Paulo state in pursuit of a better life, following his father who had travelled south years before.
Upon arriving, however, they found he had settled down with another woman.
Da Silva's mother was left alone to raise eight children, of whom little Lula was the youngest.
Pressed for money, he became a metal worker at age 14 in the metropolis' gritty outskirts. It was a physical job that famously cost him his left pinky finger.
He became a union leader in an era when Brazil's manufacturing work force was still vast, and translated into political power.
He made his first presidential run in 1989, which he lost &mdash; along with two subsequent races.
Finally, in 2002, he claimed victory and became the first worker to assume the nation's top job. And he was reelected four years later, defeating his rival Geraldo Alckmin who, this year, became his running mate.
Commodities exports to China were surging, filling government coffers, and a vast welfare program lifted tens of millions of Brazilians into the middle class.
Da Silva left office with an approval rating above 80 per cent, and then-US President Barack Obama called him &ldquo;the most popular politician on Earth.&rdquo; His hand-picked successor, Dilma Rousseff, was elected in 2014.
In Rousseff's second term, however, a sprawling corruption investigation ensnared top politicians and businessmen alike.
It plunged her administration &mdash; along with da Silva and the rest of the Workers' Party he founded &mdash; into disgrace.
Revelations of systemic kickbacks in exchange for government contracts were followed by a deep, two-year recession that many blamed on Rousseff's economic policies, and which turbocharged resentment of the Workers' Party.
She was impeached in 2016 for breaking fiscal responsibility laws regarding management of the federal budget.
Then the former president was sentenced for corruption and money laundering, and confined to a 160-square-foot room on the fourth floor of a Federal Police building in southern city Curitiba.
That sidelined him from the 2018 presidential race, and cleared the way for Jair Bolsonaro, then a fringe lawmaker, to cruise to victory. Da Silva's political legacy was in tatters.
His personal life, too, was blown to pieces. His wife passed away, which at the time he blamed on the strain caused by the investigation.
Slowly, hope crept in. He started exchanging love letters with a woman named Ros&acirc;ngela da Silva, nicknamed Janja.
Their relationship blossomed thanks to da Silva's then lawyer, Luis Carlos Rocha, who visited him every weekday.
Rocha acted as dutiful courier, hiding Janja's letters inside his jacket pocket where guards wouldn't check. He told The Associated Press he saw da Silva's face light up with each colorful envelope he delivered.
&ldquo;God willing, one day we will publish (the letters),&rdquo; da Silva said at a rally in September. &ldquo;But only for people aged over 18.&rdquo; The Supreme Court also started assessing the legality of his convictions, which it eventually annulled on the grounds that the presiding federal judge had been biased and colluded with prosecutors.
After 580 days imprisonment, da Silva was a free man &mdash; free to marry his girlfriend, and free to run for the presidency.
That didn't stop incumbent Bolsonaro, seeking a second term, from reminding voters of da Silva's convictions at every turn, warning that electing him would be like letting a thief return to the scene of the crime.
It revitalized semi-dormant sentiment against the Workers' Party, and the fact that much of Brazil still holds da Silva in disdain is a key reason this year's contest between the two political titans grew ever closer.
Ultimately, it came down to the wire: da Silva was elected, for the third time, with 50.9 per cent of the vote. It was the tightest election since Brazil's return to democracy over three decades ago.
During his victory speech, Janja was by his side, as she was throughout his campaign. She shed tears, overwhelmed with emotion. And she wasn't alone.
&ldquo;I cried when he was jailed. Now I cry because he will take Brazil back to normal.
He can do it, he has the charisma to do it," said Claudia Marcos, a 56-year-old historian who joined thousands of others to celebrate the leftist's victory on Sao Paulo's main boulevard. &ldquo;He is our phoenix. The most important president in Brazil's history.&rdquo; At the Workers' Party's headquarters on Sunday, da Silva read out a long, carefully written speech promising to unite Brazil.
He will take office on January 1, and has said he won't seek re-election. That means this presidential term could be his final act.
&ldquo;It is not the number of years that makes someone old. What makes you old is the lack of a cause,&rdquo; said da Silva, who turned 77 three days before the vote. &ldquo;Brazil is my cause. The Brazilian people are my cause.

Addressing a press conference on the sidelines of the 20th Congress of the party, which began on Sunday, Xiao Pei, a deputy head of the party&rsquo;s anti-graft body said that some 207,000 party officials were punished in the last 10 years.
Since Xi came to power in November 2012, more than 4.6 million officials around the country have been probed for corruption, Xiao said.
Xiao added these cases included 553 officials at the ministerial level and above.
The Congress with over 2,300 delegates is widely expected to endorse Xi for a third term, which will make him the only leader after the party founder Mao Zedong to continue in power for more than two-five year terms.
Critics say Xi effectively used his anti-graft campaign to consolidate power.
Ahead of the Congress, three top security officials were sentenced to death with a two-year reprieve for corruption.
Ling Li, a specialist in Chinese politics at the University of Vienna, said the party was expected to continue to use the anti-corruption drive as a tool to regulate its elites in the long term.
&ldquo;Anti-corruption has become and will remain the most potent tool to regulate elite politics in China in the next five years and beyond,&rdquo; she told the Hong Kong-based South China Morning Post.

&ldquo;It&rsquo;s characterised as a self-revolution because it is an institutionalised approach to purge its own members from positions of power, an exceptional initiative voluntarily taken by the party itself,&rdquo; she said.
The anti-graft campaign figured high in Xi&rsquo;s speech at the Congress on Sunday in which he warned that "as long as the breeding grounds and conditions for corruption still exist, we must keep sounding the bugle and never rest, not even for a minute, in our fight against corruption." Xi also spoke of serious hidden dangers inside the party, the country and the military have been removed.
"We have waged a battle against corruption on a scale unprecedented in our history. Driven by a strong sense of mission, we have resolved to 'offend a few thousand rather than fail 1.4 billion' and to clear our party of all its ills," Xi added.
He pointed out that corruption is cancer to the vitality and ability of the party, and fighting corruption should be self-reformed.
There is zero tolerance in the Communist Party for senior cadres who collude with business, President Xi warned, pledging the toughest penalties for any offenders.
&ldquo;[We will] seriously deal with corruption intertwining political and economic problems,&rdquo; Xi told party delegates attending the Congress on Sunday.
&ldquo;[We must] resolutely put a stop to collusion between cadres in leading positions who become the spokespersons or agents of interest groups and powerful cliques," he added.

Among the findings of the 36-page audit report was an exaggeration of the number of beneficiaries, vehicles listed as trucks turned out to be two-wheelers - scooters and motorcycles, and quality checks of food avoided.
The AG has got in touch with the Chief Secretary and sought an investigation by an 'independent agency' into the alleged scam, reported Times of India.
The irregularities have been detected in the Take Home Ration (THR) scheme for 2021 implemented by the Women and Child Development (WCD) department which is headed by BJP chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan. The scheme is part of the Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) programme.
The audit report has studied around 24 percent of beneficiaries of THR, a programme aimed at providing nourishment to 49.58 lakh registered children and women. These included 34.69 lakh children aged between 6 months to 3 years, 14.25 lakh pregnant women and lactating mothers and 0.64 lakhs Out Of School Adolescent Girls or OOSAGs aged between 11-14 years, basing the auditor's findings on nearly 12 lakh individuals.&nbsp;
On Sunday, following news report on the audit, the state government responded by blaming 'clerical errors' in part and assured corrective measures, as per TOI.&nbsp;
The report states that in 2018-19, the school education department had estimated the number of out-of-school girls at 9,000, but the WCD Department, without conducting any baseline survey, estimated their number at 36.08 lakh.
The audit found a clear indication of "data manipulation" during 2018-21, leading to the "fake distribution of THR worth INR 110.83 crore."
The AG also suspects a fake supply of 821.8 MT THR, worth INR 4.95 crore. Around 479.4 MT of THR worth INR 2.96 crore was transported on 'non-existent' trucks.

The Madhya Pradesh police's Economic Offences Wing (EOW), probing a disproportionate assets complaint, recovered more than Rs 85 lakh in cash from the Bhopal home of a state government clerk who consumed liquid that was suspected to be poisonous during a search on Wednesday, an official said.
During the search at the residence of upper division clerk Hero Keswani, currently drawing a salary of around Rs 50,000 per month, an EOW team also recovered documents pertaining to several properties worth crores of rupees, he said.
The search operation continued till late on Wednesday night and a note counting machine was brought to compute the exact value of the pile of cash found at his home located in the Bairagarh area, the official said.
The upper division clerk, attached to the state Medical Education Department, claimed to have consumed bathroom cleaner when the EOW team reached his house, Superintendent of Police (EOW) Rajesh Mishra told PTI.
Keswani also tried to stop officials from searching his home and pushed them, he said.
"He was rushed to the state-run Hamidia Hospital. His condition is stable and he is undergoing treatment for blood pressure-related problems," the SP said.
By the evening, more than Rs 85 lakh in cash had been found besides the documents related to immovable properties and other assets worth crores of rupees at Keswani's residence, said Mishra.
It is estimated that he owns properties worth Rs four crore, he said.
Keswani's plush residence, where costly decorative items were found, itself was worth around Rs 1.5 crore, the EOW official said.
The SP said the clerk had started his job at a salary of about Rs 4,000 a month and was currently drawing around Rs 50,000 per month.
Amounts running into lakhs of rupees were found deposited in bank accounts of Keswani's family members. He had purchased most of the properties in the name of his wife, a homemaker with no source of income, the official said.
Overall value of the assets unearthed during the search will be known only after completion of valuation work and verification of documents, Mishra said.

As many as 171 cases involving more than 600 officers accused of corruption were pending sanction for prosecution from different government departments, according to the Central Vigilance Commission's latest report.
Of these, a highest of 65 such cases involving 325 officers are pending with the Department of Financial Services (DFS), 12 cases against 67 officers with the customs and central excise, 11 cases involving 30 officers with the Ministry of Railways and eight cases involving against 19 officers with the Ministry of Defence, it said.
These cases are being probed by the Central Bureau of Investigation.
Eight cases seeking sanction to prosecute 15 officers were pending with the government of Uttar Pradesh and six cases against eight officers were pending with the Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions —which is the nodal authority for the anti-corruption matters— as on December 31, 2021, according to the report.
Five such cases involving eight officers are pending with the government of Jammu and Kashmir and four cases seeking approval to act against 36 officers are pending with the Delhi government, it said.
Four cases seeking sanction to prosecute 11 allegedly corrupt officers were pending with the Ministry of Coal and Mines and three each with the Ministry of Education and Ministry of External Affairs, the CVC annual report 2021 said.
The Income Tax department, the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs and the Ministry of Labour and Employment have also kept three cases each pending, it said.
"The Commission reviews the progress of cases pending for sanction of prosecution with various organisations, under the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988," the report said.
Of the total pending cases, 82 of them involving 350 allegedly corrupt officers were lying undecided for over three months, the time limit to decide on such requests.
Of these, a highest of 28 cases involving 182 officers were pending for over three months with the Department of Financial Services, six cases against 10 officers with the Uttar Pradesh government and five cases involving 12 officers were pending with the Defence Ministry, the report said.
On receiving requests to grant sanction for prosecution under Section 19 of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988, all the ministries, departments and organisations concerned need to take decisions expeditiously, the CVC said.
The amended Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988, also stipulates that the government or any competent authority should convey its decision within three months, it said.
In cases where consultation is required with the Attorney General or any law officer in his office, the period may be extended by a month but the reason must be recorded in writing, the report said.

"I have received a message from the BJP -- Leave AAP and join BJP. We will ensure that all cases by CBI and ED against you are shut.
"My reply to BJP -- I am a descendant of Maharana Pratap and a Rajput. I am ready to get beheaded but can never bow down before conspirators and corrupt people. All the cases against me are false. Do whatever you want to do," he said in a tweet in Hindi.

In the four corruption cases decided Monday, Suu Kyi was alleged to have abused her position to rent public land at below market prices and to have built a residence with donations meant for charitable purposes. She received sentences of three years for each of the four counts, but the sentences for three of them will be served concurrently, giving her a total of six more years in prison.
She denied all the charges, and her lawyers are expected to appeal.
She already had been sentenced to 11 years in prison on sedition, corruption and other charges at earlier trials after the military ousted her elected government and detained her in February 2021.
Analysts say the numerous charges against her and her allies are an attempt to legitimize the military's seizure of power while eliminating her from politics before the military holds an election it has promised for next year.

Former FIFA president Sepp Blatter and former UEFA President Michel Platini have been given clean chit for corruption charges in a FIFA trial by a Swiss court on Friday. Both were accused of fraud after a payment of 2 million Swiss francs from FIFA to Platini got exposed in 2015. The paymet was made in 2011. In their defense, the pair clarified that the payment was made following a 'gentleman's agrrement' whereby the then FIFA president Blatter had asked Platini to be his technical advisor in 1998. Platini worked from 1998 to 2002, FIFA could not clear his complete annual salary and would only pay him 300,000 Swiss francs annual salary due to the financial troubles of the organisation.  The rest of his salary, amounting to 1 million francs/year was to be paid later. The US givernment began investigation in multiple cases of bribery and money laundering at FIFA in 2015 in which Blatter's case also came to the fore. He and Platini both stepped down and were banned from football for 8 years. Platini after the verdict said, 'my fight is a fight agianst injustice. I won a first game'

In a significant development, the head of the government's prestigious bullet train project was sacked amid allegations of corruption. Satish Agnihotri was removed as the Managing Director of the National High Speed Rail Corporation Ltd (NHSRCL), as per news agency PTI.
The action came after a Lokpal court on 2 June 2022, ordered CBI to ascertain if charges of corruption are made out against Agnihotri. It has been claimed that when Agnihotri was CMD of Rail Vikas Nigam Ltd, he struck a quid pro quo deal with a private company.
Agnihotri has also been accused of taking up a job in a private company within one year of his retirement without the Central government's permission.
Agnihotri has challenged the allegations, claiming that he never favoured any companies, and his son did not work in any firm which secured contracts, the PTI report said. Agnihotri has also claimed that he had written to the Central government for waiver of the one year cooling-off period for private employment.
He is a 1982-batch IRSE officer who reportedly has over 20 years of experience in implementation of mega rail projects.
The NHSRCL, which is a joint venture between the Centre and states for bullet train and other high-speed projects, will now be headed by Director, Projects Rajendra Prasad for 3 months.

Assam police officer Junmoni Rabha, who shot to fame for getting her fiance arrested on fraud charges last month, was nabbed on Saturday for alleged corruption in league with her former beau.
Rabha, currently serving as a sub-inspector (SI) at Kaliabor police station in Nagaon district, was arrested after being questioned for two consecutive days. She was remanded to 14 days&rsquo; judicial custody by a court in Majuli district, police sources said.
Two contractors had complained with the police that they had entered into financial deals with her former boyfriend, Rana Pogag, after Rabha introduced him to them when she was posted in Majuli. They alleged that they were duped.

Rabha had filed an FIR against Pogag alleging that he duped some people by promising them jobs and contracts in the ONGC. He was subsequently arrested on charges of cheating and is currently lodged in Majuli jail.
Later, several allegations were made against Rabha, who was earlier referred to as 'Lady Singham' or 'Dabang cop' after Bollywood movies on super cops, that she was in league with Pogag who collected money on her behalf. An inquiry was ordered into the charges, the sources said.
The SI, who was taken to Majuli District Jail in Garmur, had been engaged to Pogag in October last year and they were scheduled to get married in November 2022.
Rabha was embroiled in a controversy in January this year when her telephonic conversation with Bihpuria MLA Amiya Kumar Bhuyan was leaked. They were engaged in an altercation over alleged harassment of the people of his constituency by her.
As the leaked audio tape had led to a furore, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that an elected representative must be given due respect.&nbsp;
